I bought 2 DBR 12's and man they sound good and are plenty loud enough. I am very happy with my set of Yamaha's!

Hi Paul, Thanks for the question. Whilst both the HS Series and DBR Series speakers are powered and (we think) offer incredible sound quality and detail, they are designed for different roles. The HS Series are designed to give you the most accurate sound at their price level - so you can safely mix with them and be confident that your mix will translate well to sound systems across the world. They're definitely sturdy but not intended to be moved around on a regular basis - for instance, the cones are deliberately left exposed to give you the best sound quality. So, they're great for studio or home use but not made for gigging. Obviously, the DBR Series is also designed to give you the most accurate sound possible - but within the confines of a speaker designed for gigging. So we choose the best combination of speaker, amp and cabinet components which will easily withstand the life of a touring musician - and be able to go very, very loud. So, these are great for hauling around to gigs but are probably too big and loud for most home/project studios and may not give you the sonic detail that HS and MSP Series monitors are renowned for. So, for home use we'd say the HS8 speakers are a great choice (and you might want to augment them with a pair of our MSP Series models and some Yamaha HiFi speakers, for reference when mixing/mastering). If you're gigging or going on tour, we'd leave the HS8s at home and look at our DBR Series (or DXR, DSR or StagePAS Series) - these are all designed to go on the road with you. Hope this helps - if you're in or near London, do drop by (we have a great range of monitor and PA speakers for you to try) or if you're further afield, then visit your nearest Yamaha Music Production/Pro Audio dealer to try them out. Hope this helps!

Do you note a hiss when the DBR12s are on? So far nothing alleviates this his except playing sound through the speakers to overcome the noise. annoying and Yamaha can't explain it.

Hi David, Thanks for the question. Usually, EQ is controlled at the source - either on a mixer, PA head or outboard EQ unit. Hence, aside from some contour controls, EQ controls aren't included on most of our active speaker range. Best wishes, Yamaha Music
