    I started to love this game almost immediately, but the moment where this game fully and truly hooked me was the cutscene with Kiryu and Nishikiyama after the fight in the sewers. Nishikiyama takes a gun out wanting to mercy kill Kiryu and seeing the distraught and pain in his face, his voice straining as he struggles to pull the trigger. One of my favorite scenes in all of gaming.

    That scene and others really empower the events of kiwami in my opinion. I'm not through the game yet (I think I'm at chapter 5), but having more context for kiryu and nishikiyama's relationship made the early events of kiwami give me far more complex emotions and questions than if I had played kiwami first. Really shows that zero isn't just a great standalone title, it's a fantastic prequel as well.

    "Clobbering anyone who looks at me funny" I'd like to point out a thing that makes Yakuza stand out compared to most sandbox titles: Kiryu, Majima or any other protagonist NEVER initiate combat, never directly attack people, they defend themselves. Part of it is due to the series creator's personal stance on not liking the idea that violence is fun, and part of it is a brilliant choice that prevents discrepancies between the narrative and gameplay. Whereas, say, games like Just Cause allow you to quite literally murder anyone in cold blood and destroy anything in your path, while still telling the player that Rico is the good guy, in Yakuza you never do something Kiryu wouldn't do. That way, there is no discrepancy between the characterization of "Storyline Kiryu" as a good-hearted, rugged but still kind person and "Gameplay Kiryu"

    That's not true. Right in the prologue he already starts fights, not to mention the whole rest of the game. In the intro cinematic he runs into (literally) a random guy knocking him down for no reason. Then a few minutes later Kiryu meets two drunks who aren't even remotely trying to start a fight with him and barely even look at him, Nishiki says "let's go around them" and Kiryu says "no let's beat them up". And he does! And so on for the rest of the game.

I would really like a yakuza game that takes more after GTA with a bigger map and cars of course, full freedom to attack whoever, but still retaining the denseness that Yakuza 0 has (haven't played the others but from what i understand its the same) Of course that's a tall order but if they were able to pull it off they'd probably end up being GTAs first real competitor. And it looks like Microsoft might buy out Sega soon so they won't exactly be strapped for cash...

    D'jango Markov Yakuza you play AS kiryu tho. He wouldn’t attack anyone at random. So it’s a narrative limitation. You care about kiryu because he interacts with the world consistently. GTA and Red Dead try to do the same thing. But they fail, because of player agency. GTA 3 has that on lock, but the increasing narrative elements and restrictive nature clash.

    One of the coolest things you'll find in later games is that the area Kiryu explores in his part of the game is a staple of the entire series. That district is generally the same in every Yakuza iteration, just with differences here and there as the games go on. While this might SOUND boring or repetitive on paper, the opposite is true. Since there are so many things to do in the games, you never feel bored and, due to the small area you go back to on every adventure, you see it grow and change. It's alive, just like Kiryu himself and you become familiar with it to the point where you feel attached to it. This becomes not just Kiryu's turf... but your turf... your home. So you begin to feel like you really do have a stake in all this. It's honestly pretty clever for Sega to do it like this.

I used to play in DDR tournaments and rhythm games are almost always fun for me, so I was floored by how this minigame was the bane of my playthrough. I thought it'd be shogi, mahjong, or the catfights. Nope!

    It's worth noting that Sotenbori is not a neighbouring district in Tokyo, but is actually Osaka's Kamurocho equivalent. Which makes its relevance to the Empty Lot storyline even more intriguing, since the war for it extends across the country as opposed to just being Tokyo focused. That's also why there's a dialect difference between the two, with the residents in Sotenbori speaking in Kansai-ben (more casual with a harsher tone) which was translated to a more southern style American dialect in the English localization.

Judgement never surprised me with a ridiculous twist, and I think that comes down to the type of film they were taking their cues from. Japanese Yakuza movies are operatic madness in a cool jacket, and we don't make stuff quite like that in the West. Detective procedurals are a dime a dozen where ever you go and the tropes are pretty consistent across them, but video games have an easier time looking like Law & Order then they do looking like an 80s grindhouse movie.

    Yakuza 0 is better than any GTA. Everything from the story, combat, side missions, cutscenes... it's just on another level entirely. I say this as someone who grew up on GTA games, but yeah... the only thing GTA does better is probably the scale. I think it's great in terms of offering massive open worlds, with all kinds of vehicles, radio DJs, etc. But Yakuza 0 is better in everything else.

    They aren't really comparable, honestly. GTA's open world was designed to fuck around in and emergent storytelling, and the story itself is an afterthought. Yakuza's world, on the other hand, was designed as a method of delivering stories. Hell if Yakuza 0 doesn't blow GTA V out of the water for my tastes though

    Thank you for this video, many of these popular KZread Gamers have tremendous influence on the games people play. I would have never touched, looked at, or considered playing Yakuza 0. I then watched Angry Joes review, Ive been increasingly critical of Joe in recent years, but he sold me on trying this game. I played it and hated it after Chapter 2 and deleted it. A few months later the gaming Gods touched me and I gave it another try. By the end of the game I was amazed at the greatness of this game. When those end credits hit with that great song, I stood up and actually applauded this game. I have since played Kiwami 1, Kiwami 2, Yakuza 3, recently beat Yakuza 4, and Yakuza 6 and waiting on the remaster Yakuza 5 in February. I never would have played this great franchise if not fro Angry Joe. People will see your video and will try and enjoy this great franchise, you really do provide a service. Yes! Persona 5 is gonna be the easiest one to get in to on PS3/PS4 (even at around 80-100 hours in just a first run through of the game with all the grinding of gear and Personas), as you need both a PS2 and VitaTV/PSTV to truely experience the 4 previous games in completion. You'll need the following (in story order); VitaTV/PSTV to play the PSP version of Persona 1 in total with the better translation and additional quest (PS1 version cut out the Snow Queen quest). PS2 to play both halves of the Persona 2 story (only the first half got released on PSP in English, though if you're willing to install CFW to run homebrew on your Vita, there is a fan-translation of the second half of P2's story from the Japanese PSP release in development). PS2 to play Persona 3: FES & VitaTV/PSTV to play Persona 3: Portable, both of which add their own extra content (extra ending and playtime on FES, expanded story and option of a female character on Portable). VitaTV/PSTV to play the enhancements of Persona 4: Golden compared to the PS2 version of Persona 4.

  • @ElNeroDiablo

    @ElNeroDiablo

    4 жыл бұрын

    @some random guy/videos problem with using a PS3 for playing PS2 games is you can run into emulation issues on the later Phats, on the Slims & Super-Slims especially, as the PS2 hardware in the PS3 is slowly removed and replaced with software emulation (Launch PS3 being both a PS2 & PS3 in one was a factor to the high cost back in the day due to having the CPU & GPU of the PS2 as part of the circuitry of the Launch PS3). And yeah, I listed the games and systems in order of hardware needed to play the full stories in order from the first game, and the best way to experience the full story of each game. One could just use the VitaTV/PSTV (same device, just Japan Vs. English naming, only difference in-use is the O/X flip outside of games) for playing Persona 1, 2 & 3 if you don't mind missing on the second half of 2's story or missing on the extension of story 3 got in FES on PS2 compared to what Portable had on PSP. I will stand by saying Persona 4 is better with Golden on Vita, particularly with the Aeon Social Link and ability to check online what other players did on a day-to-day basis to help decide what you do in terms of grinding reps and stuff.

    The real real secret to getting money is Mr. Shakedown and the 1.5x multiplier from the shrine. Alternate losing all your dosh to him, getting it back with 50% added, and losing it to him again.
