Yaesu FTM-500 Wideband - Crossband Repeater - Old style Menu - 2 Months on Likes and Dislikes
In this upload I will show you how to do the Wideband mod (if you want to do that) It’s not for me.. How to set up a Cross Band Repeater, and changing the menu to the older FTM400 Style menu. I will also tell you what I think of the radio after living with it for the last 2 and a bit months…..

Thanks for the update Mike, I nearly hit the buy button a few times on this rig... then I stopped to think what I really wanted, I see it's on offer at the moment for £599 but for an extra £350 could pick up a second hand FT991A from a dealer with some warranty, although this is a little bit bigger rig than I like - I know they are two completely different rigs but I wanted to have a play with Fusion but with the 991 you get some big extra features... Like you say I think Yaesu has missed a trick. We need a replacement for FT857 or that sort of size which includes C4FM & 4m all mode.. We can dream!

I have never used c4fm.. but I was looking at getting this to try it out.. but after watching, I think I am with you.. I will hold out for a 991a, even tho I think I would prefer a separate rig for hf vhf/uhf.. in the shack. I have the ft- 857d in the car. and FT-450D at home.

I don't understand why Yaesu doesn't put wideband receive into their mobiles - I enjoy monitoring CB, 4m/6m etc. My FT-3D can receive anywhere from 522KHz up!

Thanks for the info, much prefer the old style menu layout! and I didn't realise this radio was able to do x-band 🙂 bonus! one thing I wish and no doubt along with many other 500 users is that Yaesu would add SSB, surely it could be a simple FW update to add SSB!? @Yaesu? #Yaesu #FTM-500DE

So when your holding down the BAND + FUNC+POWER? does this wideband the radio to transmit on PMR 446? ive seen videos on MARS mods for the FTM 300 but they have to take the radio apart and de solder some component? But are you saying with the FTM 500 that you just have to do what your showing in the video to mars mod it?

  • @sunnysidegardeners7163

Nope, you have to remove the resistor as per in the video to "wideband" the radio.

Thanks Mike, excellent video. I was wondering whether to splash out and get myself one of these, but after this video my mind is made up to pass this one by. If I want an APRS mobile rig, I'll shop for a "second-ham'd" FTM-400 or similar. Cheers, Jan (M7HNK)

I have the 500 and 400. The 400 is better mobile still because of that big screen IMO. The 500 is beautifful, but why the hell they can't implement memory banks in mobile radio's just makes me wonder. They did it in a £400 HT, and don't in a £630 mobile. It's crazy. Mike, Thanks for the overview and "how to" on some of the undocumented features, definetly useful especially for Doing some mobile ISS work with regard to the crossband repeat. One item Ive seen twice since owning my FTM500 since July, on 2 different occasions Ive observed the radio display up in the right hand corner of the gray notification bar the battery voltage. At first I just thought I was seeing something strange then the second time I saw it I knew it was giving a batt voltage. Just curious if you have seen this or can you tell me how to toggle it to display on command. wonder how many easter eggs are on this radio we'll never know about. Thanks

It's a completely different radio and incompatible with US or EU bands. And the Japanese market radios can't be flashed with other region's firmware. Don't buy one just because they're less expensive.

Totally depends on where you live. There are a bunch of *active* 2m/70cm repeaters where I am - FM, fusion and DMR - and some simplex on 2m. Also lots of APRS. Plus there's all the other bands! If you truly think amateur radio is dead, why are you wasting your own time watching and commenting on this video?

Where I am in northern NV, it seems like very few folks are still on 2m repeaters and have gone over to 440. I've been out of ham radio for over 20 years and just decided to get back in. My old Yaesu 2600M mobile was programmed to bunches of 2m repeaters here. I just got a new ARRL repeater guide and see that NONE of the frequencies I had in my old radio show up in the new guide.

The thing is with my schedule, nobody is on 2M or 70cm when I commute. I'm not talking about people already being on, but people not even responding on the repeater or 520. They just have their nets and turn their radios off immediately apparently.
