Yaesu FTdx10: Setting the Display Spectrum (Video #28 in this series)

Ғылым және технология

My good friend Joel, KC4WZB, loaned me his brand new Yaesu FTdx10. When I say loaned, I mean he picked it up at Ham Radio Outlet and brought it straight to me, so I could unbox it and shoot a series of videos, exploring the capabilities of this latest offering from Yaesu.
This is the twenty-eighth video in a series of videos I have produced to show the capabilities of the Yaesu FTdx10.
In this video I show how to set the span of the display spectrum to start at the lower band edge of a General Class licensee. You cannot currently set the upper band edge to a user-defined setting. But you can select a Span setting of something like 200K, 500K, etc.
With the lower band edge set at 3.800MHz and the Span set to 200K, it works out perfectly for the 80 meter band. The waterfall/3DSS shows the portion of SSB spectrum where a General Class licensee can operate. But remember that a General Class licensee cannot use LSB at lower than 3.803MHz.
The span doesn’t have an option that allows you to set the upper band edge at 7.300MHz for 40 meters, after you have set the lower band edge to 7.175MHz. You can set to a 200K span and the waterfall will show the spectrum of 7.175MHz to 7.375MHz. But I find that most operators struggle more with remembering the lower band edge for their license class, so setting the lower band edge is the more important parameter. The radio will not allow us to accidentally transmit above the upper band edge anyway, unless the radio has been modified to do so.

I know this is dividing people, but I find the 3D display about useless / confusing If you want to tune to a signal - you need to locate the right edge of the signal, as the signal is moving horizontal towards the left / lower frequency. Glad you switched to the waterfall mode - as many presenters stay in 3D mode because they think it look cool. I can usually distinguish between data, SSB and AM signals with the waterfall - no chance with the 3D BTW - you 'train your tuner' video saved me about 500 USD for a tuner - switching from a monthly to a yearly subscription in appreciation Thanks for you thorough presentations

Thanks! I have “Train Your Tuner” t-shirts available at www.N4HNHradio.com. The funny thing is that I don’t even watch either waterfall or scope. I’m old fashioned. I rotate the VFO to the areas of the band where I expect to find specific types of operation. But that’s because after 42 years of this, I just know where to find the signals. I also watch the DX Cluster and SOTAWATCH.

I think band edges on the scope are where the Icom 7300/7610 have the edge over Yaesu. You can manually set them and set four independent ones for each band so you can have one that shows the whole band, one that shows the CW portion, one that shows data and one that shows the SSB portion of the band.

Yes, it’s a matter of being able to see the signal versus pulling it out of the noise with QRM up or down the band. For me, since it’s radio, receiver performance has to rank higher than a waterfall or not. The receiver in the FTdx10 is second in the world. It’s difficult for a pure SDR to beat a good hybrid. The FT-710 AESS has come the closest of any pure SDR. It ranks one below the FTdx10, beating radios that cost 12 and 15 times more. But I don’t even watch the scope. After you become more familiar with where different types of communications happens where on each band, you can just rotate your VFO knob. For example, CW in the lower portion of the 40m band, FT8 at 7.074 and FT4 at 7.078, SSB from 7.125 to 7.300, with various nets throughout, plus a DX window, and AM at 7.285.

In using the "regular waterfall display" not the 3d display, I would like to be able to change the color of some of the display lines. For example, the display "action" or amplitude line above the main split screen division line. Also, changing the waterfall signal lines below the split screen.

The FTdx101 has a narrow-band SDR display that can be set to a different color than the main theme color. That is covered in my FTdx101 videos, which are available for S9 (VIP) Patreon members.

Yes. Others have requested the ability to set the upper frequency limit for the scope. We can set the lower but then we can only choose 1K, 2K, 5K, 10k up to 1000k of span. Their reason was to set according to their operating privileges, i.e. 3.8 to 4.0, 7.175 to 7.3, 14.225 to 14.350, etc., for a General class licensee who only works SSB. Some comments I read said that these people should know their privileges from passing the exam. I asked Tim at Yaesu and he wasn’t very supportive. John K. from Yaesu said to fill out the Contact Us at Yaesu.com with requests. He said those are seen in Japan, where decisions are made. 73, de N4HNH

I didn’t shoot a specific video about connecting an external monitor. There are detailed discussions about that at: www.PATREON.com/N4HNH Those discussions are only visible to members of the Patreon team. There are subjects that we discuss in the Patreon portal that aren’t necessarily covered in a video. There is also a discussion about connecting a wireless mouse. I can tell you that the safest thing you can do is follow the connection diagram in the operating manual and use a native DVI-D type monitor. They are still available but they are becoming more rare. The DVI-D to HDMI adapters are notorious for causing the DVI-D port of the FTdx101D/MP, FTdx10, and FT-710 AESS to fail. Even though Yaesu has thus far honored the three year warranty and repaired the radios, they advise us to use a monitor with an actual DVI-D connection. Some have reported using an adapter for as long as 6 months, thinking everything was okay, but then the port failed. It has to do with adapters back-feeding current to the radio port. There have been reports of passive adapters that seem to work fine but Yaesu hasn’t officially endorsed one, to my knowledge. My suggestion is to get an actual DVI-D monitor.

I've been a long time user of an SDRplay (along with Uno or Console software) externally with different rigs I've owned, so let me ask about when setting SPAN...I see that you had a 500K and 200K option and nothing in between, so if I wanted my span to be 3.600 to 4.000 is this possible to achieve?

  • @n4hnhradio

    @n4hnhradio

    Жыл бұрын

No. You can select the low frequency for the span but the top frequency is determined from the presets. There are numerous choices but there is no exact setting. After 100K is 200K and after 200K is 500K. After 500K is 1000K. If you are prioritizing your purchase based upon the span range for the scope, you won’t be purchasing a Yaesu FTdx10. There is no perfect radio. We must choose based upon our priorities as an operator. My priority is pulling weak signals out of the noise floor with strong signals nearby in frequency. For that, no SDR in the world beats the FTdx10 and its hybrid technology. Only its big brother, the FTdx101D or the 200W MP variant, can beat the FTdx10 in that category. Since this is radio and not TV, I have to make my priority something related to hearing, instead of seeing. The display is nice but it isn’t of utmost importance to me. If you are still considering the purchase of an FTdx10, you might want to buy before the sale price ends on September 30, 2022. With the introduction of the FT-710 AESS, which I call the FTdx10 “lite”, Yaesu has a transceiver to compete head on with the IC-7300. So there is no reason for Yaesu to continue losing money on the FTdx10 by cutting their profit to the bare minimum. There are two discounts in effect for the FTdx10 until the end of September, totaling $300 in savings. The discounts make the current price of the FTdx10 only $100 more than the FT-710 AESS (FTdx10 “lite”). 73, de N4HNH

You have until September 30th before the $100 and $300 discounts expire. I think Yaesu has only been offering those discounts because they didn’t have a pure SDR to market to the entry-level customers. I wouldn’t consider the FT-710 AESS as a final transceiver. It will not have the benefit of the hybrid technology. It does seem to be a great SDR though. Many hams don’t understand that SDR is cheaper to build, not necessarily better. Of course you can spend $4,000 to $6,000 on a better filtered SDR, but none of those beat the $1700 FTDx10. I hope you find what you’re looking for. Hi Chuck! It’s interesting that you mention that. One of my Patreons has donated a FTdx10 to me, so I can continue making videos about it, and not keep holding Joel’s radio hostage. I am overwhelmed by their generosity. The FTdx10 isn’t replacing the FTdx5000MP. It will serve alongside the 5000. It will make a great backup and Field Day radio. And, like I said, it will allow me to continue shooting videos about the FTdx10 without feeling like I’m holding Joel’s radio hostage. The only major advantage the FTdx10 has over the FTdx5000 is it’s display and it’s portability. So the 5000 isn’t going anywhere. The 5000 has dual simultaneous receive (supports diversity receive), multiple antenna ports, Super Narrow APF option, IPO2, 200 Watts, and ergonomics that is second to none. I should shoot a video about Diversity Receive. 73, Doug

Hi! I understand completely where you are coming from. I still prefer the FTdx5000MP, for some of the reasons I mentioned above, in my response to Chuck. I waited for the FTdx101D to come out before I made my final decision. I tried it against the FTdx5000MP that was sitting next to it at Ham Radio Outlet. The FTdx5000MP had already won me over, versus what Kenwood and ICOM had to offer in August of 2019. By the time I made my decision, the FTdx101MP was also available. But I still preferred the FTdx5000MP. The receivers are neck-to-neck in performance. But I chose knobs over a fancy display. I think for someone who is accustomed to a waterfall, the FTDX101D or MP is probably a better choice. I just think that , if they choose a FTdx5000MP, after a while, they might miss the waterfall on the FTdx101. The FTdx5000MP had the best Digital Noise Reduction when I compared it to the FTdx101D and MP. With the latest firmware update, the FTdx101D and MP are finally on par with the DNR in the FTdx5000MP. The improved DNR rolled out with the FTdx10, and is in the latest update for the FTdx101D and MP. I can attest that the DNR in the FTdx10 is as good as the DNR in the FTdx5000MP. I also make use of the IPO2 option that the FTdx5000MP has, as well as the Super Narrow option for the Audio Peak Filter, for CW. IPO1 on Yaesu radios is still a low level RF amplifier, optimized for S/N ratio. IPO2 completely bypasses any amplification in the first IF stage. That comes in handy when my neighbor is transmitting, and also during a 80 or 160 meter rag chew, where everyone is 30 to 40dB over S9. I was a little apprehensive about the reported display failures of the DSP section of the 5000, but I read that Yaesu got a new supplier a few years ago. So far mine has been flawless. I run the brightness of the display at approximately halfway. But again, if you think you will miss the fancy display, you should opt for the 101. You can’t go wrong with either choice. 73, de N4HNH

I had to consider longevity as well, but I reasoned that the FTdx5000MP represents the most mature version of that radio model. In all honesty, I don’t think there is anything else that Yaesu could do to the 5000 through a software update that would make it any better. The FTdx10 and FTdx101 are just now catching up the the DNR in the FTdx5000MP. As far as a waterfall goes, I can take it or leave it. The SM-5000 does enough for me. It displays where signals are up and down the band. There is even a peak hold mode that allows me to see where a signal was, in case they stop transmitting by the time you move the VFO. 73, de N4HNH
