Y Religion Episode 95 - The Miraculous Translation of the Book of Mormon (Gerrit Dirkmaat)

The prophet Ammon declared that “God has provided a means that man, through faith, might work mighty miracles” (Mosiah 8:18). A marvelous work and a wonder during the Restoration was the translation of the Book of Mormon. But how exactly did this translation take place? Why do critics and believers debate various theories? In this episode, Dr. Gerrit Dirkmaat, associate professor of Church history and doctrine, discusses his book Let’s Talk about the Translation of the Book of Mormon, coauthored with Dr. Michael Hubbard MacKay. He explains why conflicting theories exist, demystifies the translation process by analyzing witness and scribe accounts, and details the Prophet Joseph’s own depiction of the miraculous translation of the Book of Mormon.
Each year, Brigham Young University Religious Education professors produce hundreds of publications on subjects related to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This podcast brings this research into one place to enlighten the everyday seeker of truth. Interviewing the author, we discuss why the study was done, why it matters, and why the professor chooses to be both a scholar and a disciple. This is Y Religion: Research to Enlighten Your Mind.
Y Religion podcast episodes are available every two weeks and can be found on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Pandora, and on the web at rsc.byu.edu/media/y-religion

I love listening to Dr Dirkmaat, he's so sincere and eloquent. I do have one quibble though. He often says "you have to want to believe." When I came to the Church I didn't want to believe at all, but the spirit of the Church suddenly became so self-evident that I believed because of what I saw and felt in my soul without really "wanting" to. (if that makes sense)

We don't have to assert that physical light shone from the stones. Darkening the environment around the eyes to block out distractions to inspiration or revelation is a familiar tactic for spiritual practitioners. It's similar to closing the eyes when praying or meditating. If Joseph Smith had simply revealed the text of a lost book, it would be harder to distinguish it from works produced by automatic writing or purported transcriptions from the Akashic Records or whatever else. Acquaintance with various esoteric spiritual practices makes Joseph's translation process familiar - but again, it also sets it apart as something above and beyond.

After having had read the Book of Mormon a third time I share I found it complex; core message is the atonement of Christ, mirrors the testimony of the New Testament, and brings one closer to the Father, having read it! It is another testament of Yahshua HaMashiach! Its message is captured in opening pages for convincing of the Jew and Gentile that “Jesus” is the Christ, the Eternal God, manifesting himself unto all nations … So, say you don’t take my advice now to read it, will you when the church changes its name to The Assembly of Tribulation Saints (TS) for Yahshua HaMashiach? How about if an outsider becomes their president? Call it…things to watch for in 2024! ❤ VANA
