Border View Farms is a mid-sized family farm that sits on the Ohio-Michigan border. My name is Nathan. I make and edit all of the videos posted here. I farm with my dad, Mark and uncle, Phil. Our part-time employee, Brock, also helps with the filming. 1980 was our first year in Waldron where our main farm is now. Since then we have grown the operation from just a couple hundred acres to over 3,000. Watch my 500th video for a history of our farm I filmed with my dad.
I started making these videos in the fall of 2019 as a way to help show what I do on a daily basis as a farmer. Agriculture is different from any other industry and I believe the more people that are showing their small piece of agriculture, helps to build our story. We face unique challenges and stressful situations but have some of the most rewarding payoffs in the end. I get to spend everyday doing what I love, raising my kids on the farm, and trying to push our farm to be better every year. I hope that I can address questions or concerns that you might have about farms and agriculture.
I hope you enjoy my content and ask questions as you have them. I do my best to answer anything I can. Thanks for watching!
I appreciate you subscribing to my channel and liking my videos. You can also find me on Facebook borderviewfarms and on Instagram @borderviewfarms

lOOKS LIKE YOU ARE CATCHING A LITTLE RAIN THIS MORNING!!!
Nathan - Its really neat to see you and Brock doing wheat at the same time the balers are working. Cool video 👍
Nathan - great video footage, your farming knowledge sharing is the best. I watch every video.
More great drone footage Nathan! Ĝood lookin wheat! Thanks for farmin', fixin' and feedin' 🇺🇸 !!
We bought the same fuel pump last year and we love it so much better then a 15 gpm you don’t have to wait 20 minutes anymore it’s 5 minutes 😂. Hope you have a safe and fun harvest 🌾.
Livestream with both you and Brock was great Made me think had you ever thought of doing one with your dad? Like maybe a rainy evening on your porch. I think itd be awesome to hear Marks answers to some questions I still think one with the ladies of BVF would be great too. Get your mom & Maddies perspective on being farm wives
Might need to add service routine of always updating software during equipment maintenance / prep prior to tillage, harvest, etc. Tractor, Combine etc is just sitting there while doing other repairs anyhow. 🙃 Busy, productive day, great video. Thanks!
Great drone footage, you could really see it in the rows Closer and closer each time 👍
Good video good to see y'all
I really think with how you manage your crops you need a hagie. Will open up a lot of doors for you to explore. After you've side dressed you will find roots in the center of the rows

Lol he thinks that also , it migh happen if every supporter donated a few hundred to the funds😗
nice day of workin.
you COULD make your phone into a WIFI HOTSPOT and pair it to the AGROCART pad thingie.... so it just connects and sends when it needs to???
Interesting video.
Good morning
I suppose that if this works and pays for itself then that will give you the ammunition to convince your dad to get a Hagie sprayer when its time to replace the current sprayer

There's not a lot of debate about going to a Hagie next time we get a sprayer. The question is when is the right time and what do we look for? New Hagie sprayers are well over $600,000.
Nathan, it would be interesting when you have down time (maybe this winter??) to go through an analysis of owning a Hagie sprayer versus your John Deere sprayer. Is the cost difference between the two such that hiring certain applications done by a custom sprayer just as cost effective as owning a Hagie sprayer?
@w056007568
Жыл бұрын
Don't forget that hiring in is also about hiring a skilled and experienced operator at a time of year when you are stretched for staff as well as not having to purchase, fit and install the specialist application equipment. Note. I am ignoring the fact that the JD sprayer is not capable (for height clearance reasons) to do late season application of fungicides in corn which, as we know the Hagie can and has done in the past for Nathan. Against this issue of custom application if BVF had its own Hagie then application timing issues would normally be easier to achieve subject to weather complications. - You don't have to wait until your work priority rises to the top of the list that the contractor has of work needing done. @@w056007568 I agree with everything that you stated. Another factor to be considered could be switching away from anhydrous ammonia application to 28% only. It is a complex and interesting analysis when the time arises for BVF to upgrade sprayers.

Marestail NATHAN 😂?? Why not the whole boom width on Y drops too heavy ?? 5:30 am hour behind old milking time😢! Thanks young man much!!
Don't know how hard your sensors are to pin up but on our 930's we use short tarp strap to hold up during wheat harvest when moving and pin in the fall for bean harvest
good music to ydrop video, music makes all the difference .......
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Yes we had chemical damage in a field of wheat as well was around 20 feet of damage
It's too bad fungicide won't work with Ydrops... For iPad data you could turn on your phones hotspot, but that might be a bit much when you are also filming with the device, but it might be worth a try. Or you could have someone else, like Brock, turn on his hotspot and then the ipad could connect whenever you are close enough.
Why does the combine calibration move around from year to year? Or is it from crop to crop? I’ve never run a combine so don’t really understand this. Still by far the best farm KZread channel!
@BorderViewFarms
Жыл бұрын
Well the combine didn't really change but changing crop conditions will affect how the yield monitor performs.
Ive been y dropping for 3 years, quit anhydrous y drop at v4 and at v10 25-30 gal, need at least 30 for a good stream
Next new purchase for BVF new Hagie sprayer with y-drop set up?

Would be nice
Use your phone as a temporary wifi hotspot for your ipad when you need to.
We grow alot of wheat. And we spray high rate fungicides Which makes a huge difference in high yielding wheat. Gotta keep the flag leaf and all other leaves on the plant nice and Green and healthy as long as possible before maturity…We find this dramatically increases yield. Also we seed very high rates of wheat it has a big effect on yield and helps keep the crop cleaner and the crop is as well dramatically increasing the grain bushel test weight. Seed 150-170 pounds an acre of seed depending on the test weight and kernel sizes. Which having a higher grain test weight that also increases the yield by weight when harvesting…obviously and depending on the soil we give 85-105 pounds of Nitrogen. Wheat loves the N. Doing this we have gotten some large fields average 128 bushels to the acre. So I’m sure you probably know all this stuff. But everything mentioned has a huge effect on the yield. Also spraying liquid N on the stand when you see the crop looks like it’s gonna be. High yield can also benefit. I mentioned all this cause you were experimenting in the middle of that field with different things. We think on a perfect yer the yields can even be higher So yea thought I’d offer my 2 cents. Cheers.
Can you personal hotspot wifi from your phone so the iPad you have can connect to the internet for you? Might save some money.
Has wheat price held up this season? Never understood why more corn and bean farmers don’t add wheat to their crop rotation. It seems it would help w it’s risk management.
Took Cole and daddy Cornstar 4 days to put their y drops on the haggis. Guess we know you is the better farmer

I wouldn't exactly consider either of those 2 a reliable comparison or source of info. Hard to believe people still waste their lives watching those idiots
What was your decision to y drop at this corn stage compared to a week or two later or right after tassling?
I was always under the impression that it was 20 kernals per square foot equalling 1 bushel in wheat

Maybe across the width of the head. This is concentrated in the windrow.
Is this farmer Hague?
activate Mobile Hotspot on your phone and you have wifi where ever your phone is
Did you get your software updates done? If so did it get machine sync back working, and whatever the other thing was?
@BorderViewFarms
Жыл бұрын
Did the updates this morning. Have to wait until we're back in the fields to see if it's working
You talked about buying his Haggie when he gets his new one. Is that still the plan and will you keep or sell the Deere sprayer?
@BorderViewFarms

He's going to keep his when he gets a new one I guess
I enjoyed yesterday’s livestream, however, the audio on my end sounded like you & Broc were talking through a cheap set of walkie talkies.

I noticed that as well but hey it was their first attempt at a split screen.Hopefully they try it again and I'm sure they'll tinker with the settings till its good as can be
Nathan was y dropping in your budget? Or is y dropping something you added this year because of the weather?
@BorderViewFarms

I had been planning on it
What was total gallons per acre you put on with Ys? Other than logistics of handling more fluid any reason not to mix it 1/2 with water and doubling your GPA to get a more consistent stream?
@BorderViewFarms
Жыл бұрын
20, no but handeling more volume means less acres per fill. It takes longer and is less efficient
I wonder how many hours are put on machines doing stupid things like updating and regening.
@BorderViewFarms

More than there should be, but usually I turn the equipment off and leave the key on for software updates.
Can he go down the road with the y drops or do they have to be trailered?

Do you have a total number of bales for each field ? Just curious

@@BorderViewFarms sensible. See the cart isn’t always used. Notes the Browns use their cart to track all of their crops regardless of field size / need. Does that make sense for your tracking
