My battle brothers and I answered, "In case of Alpha Legion infiltrators." The Chaplain laughed. We laughed. The Techmarines laughed. The Alpha Legion infiltrator laughed. We killed the Alpha Legion infiltrator. And then we sent our own report back to the Alpha Legion.

I think the alpha legions aren't traitors. I think they're the emperor's long game. Stabbing chaos in the back at literally every turn. My best example is "Vraks" where the alpha legions feeds literally dozen or two warbands of bunch of different traitor groups including plague marines, and iron warrior warbands, and the best yet is they feed traitor TITANS into a campaign that they know will end in imperial victory. Causing basically an entire traitor titan legion to be lost, multiple warbands almost completely destroyed, if not completely...And then sat back and watched the show. It was the most troll move possible. And the best part is because they made it seem like it was an actual fight, no one on the traitor side would be the wiser that they were fed into a perfect killing zone.

@@NeiasaurusCreations They are full on traitors, read some of the newer stuff about them, specifically about the Unsung. They pretty much hate the emperor and think the whole of the imperium are idiots beneath them. GW is also retconning some of the "I am Alpharius" memes and they are more or less a proper Traitor Legion. If they still have a grand plan it's probably to take over the whole imperium rather than leave it to the Emperor, other Primarchs or Abaddon.

@@nitogame I dunno know. Alpha legion has always been seemingly betraying other legions. I don't think they can retconn everything like the alpha legion feeding more traitors into vraks despite knowing it was a one way trip for most of them. Besides, I don't particularly enjoy massive retcons. But I was again referring to the iron warriors that switched back to the imperium and sacrificed their lives for it.

Even delving into the horrors of the Warp isn't as bad as trying to understand the Alpha Legion

I was expecting Origins and History in quotation marks...

I just remembered something. Alpha Legion (20th Legion) is likely a reference to the a spy ring called the Twenty Committee from WW2. They're the Legion with the numerals XX. Their Legion number is a double cross

These are fantastic! I wish I could get these in an audio format (like on Spotify or a podcast platform) so I could listen to them all day at work. Thanks for these incredibly immersive lore videos, you're a class above!

The small size of the Legion is an advantage, or indeed necessary, to achieve the anonymity required to successfully implement their signature tactics. I'm also pretty sure Omegon (or Alpharius) stayed on Terra while his twin scattered with the others. Probably together with the emperor as the myth claims, but being on his own on Terra is a interesting thought.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are / were among LARGEST legions, especially considering attrition.

amazed that this vid on the origins and history of the Alpha boys isn't him just going "FUCK KNOWS!" over and over for 20 minutes

I really love the subtle nod that this video as well as the AL tactics and structure one are not included in the legiones Astartes playlist (or any of the other playlists)

I’m thinking Omegon stayed on Terra and coordinated things from behind the scenes until Alpharius was found later on. The Astartes that spoke with the Dark Angels was likely Omegon. When the heresy came around Alpharius sided with Horus as he was less connected to the Imperium and was willing to sacrifice humanity to fulfil the prophecy of the Kabal. Omegon disagreed. That could be true. More likely, the creators don’t even know, but just like watching the fans struggle to explain the unexplainable.

This video style is very well made and it clearly takes so much time to research, script and put together, props - there are other lore channels I've watched but they tend to have somewhat clunky writing and tacked on skits etc., so I'm glad to have found one that's so well written and focused on the lore itself

Another excellent record, Remembrancer! Alpha Legion, along with their Primarch(s), have always been one of the more interesting legions. I'd love to see you do more records about the various chapters that descended from these various legions, like the Black Templars, Iron Snakes, etc.

One thing you can say about the alpha legion and their daddy regardless who is speaking no matter how squirrlie, mean or down right there nicest person ever, alpharius makes a consistent impression with nearly all personality types. Kurz was blunt as few ever could be and vulcan and sanguinius spoke of him exactly like dorn and kurz did. Man what a character. A person who is a character by his sheer lack of any personal character at all. Fitting.

I was wondering the same myself and then I got to thinking. And honestly this seems very plausible, my own theory was that the emperor was secretly funneling resources from forgeworlds and having the techpriests lie about " manufacturing issues " and " faulty batches with the newer models ". Maybe it was a combination of both?

My feeling is that the XI, XVII and XX legions were the only ones which the Emperor intended to survive the Great Crusade. All the other Astartes were necessarily disposable. It may even be that knowledge of this was what doomed the II and XI legions.

@@matthewmcneany i wrote this post just before I finished "Fury of Magnus." The new solar war novella. Suffice to say, no spoilers: you were right, I was wrong. Literally cried a little on finishing it, because /that/ was not what I expected at all.. Spoiler below. Emps made magnus the offer to return to his side, no problem. All it would cost Magnus was the Thousand Sons -- /his/ sons. He did not accept the offer, and that's why history turned out this way.

@@jonsalvadori6275 You've inadvertently set off my 40k lore rant mode (appologies in advance): I'm a big fan of the (somewhat more oldschool) 'no one piece of 40k lore is definitive' school of thought and if you have to creativly interpret something to justify a cool or interesting hypothesis that fits whatever narrative you think is best for a character then don't worry about it - 40k is about saying whatever sh*t sounds cool at the time and (maybe) working out the details after the fact. Characters in 40k can be pretty inconsistent over the 30+ years or whatever they've been writing and it's way more important to have fun with the lore, games and models than it is to "be correct" - If you can come up with a justification for seeing something a particular way even if its a minority opinion then there's an in universe justification for some heretical sect in the inquesition or rogue Astartae chapter believing it. If you want to exlore a paricular action a particular character took because it doesn't fit into you head cannon then that's a worthwile and genuinely intersting way to engage with the lore. Or at least that's my 2 cents when it comes to lore. I haven't read 'Fury..' though I'm aware of the relevant lore point (and hear the book is really well written) but there's two points I think: Firstly, He made that decision in that context but he could have made a differnt one in a differnt context, even faced with the same choice - people (even demi-God people) are like that. But back to my broader point - it kinda comes down to (my opinion - shared by some people in the community that) all lore is esentially a single perspective of events from narrators of varying degrees of unreliablilty - which is why retcons should be such a non-issue. The question of if an event happened the way it was told in a certain novel, army book, etc. is always up for debate imo.I know not everyone like this idea but I think its one reason the franchise has lasted and grown and I find the fact that everyone has their own (slightly) differnt headcannon kinda neat. Back to Magnus, if someone wanted to - not saying that you should see it this way but as an specific example of what I'm trying to say someone could do this - Use the loyalist Space marine codex and build an army armoud a splinter cell of loyalist thousand sons (and/or Blood Ravens) chapter who's absolute belief in the goodness of their primarch and loyalty to the Emperor protects them from Rubric and who through some prophetic vision think they know the actual truth of Magnus' downfall (which can be whatever crazy theory you want it to be - or even who believe that he did nothing wrong _and are in your own headcannon wrong about that fact_ but their belief leads them down some tragic or heroic path - indeed what could be more apt and tragic than some successors to the thousnad sons who are seeking forbidden knowledge that doesn't exist in a vain attempt to prove litterally everyone else in the galaxy wrong and never will) - and all of that is to me more at least as interesting an idea as someone who says: I'm going to play a standard Thousand Son's chaos warband - not that playing/building a standard lore army can't also have really interesting themes and stories to explore too. I've always thought that the point of 40k is to give (alright sell) people the tools to tell whatever stories they want to tell, and part of the point about the traditional scope and scale and vagueness of 40k is so there's deliberately room for the werid and niche stories alongside the 'Fall of Cadia's even when they seem contradictory. Somewhere deep in the Grim darkness of the far future there's anything and everything your imagination can create. Anyway, that's my way too overthought 40k lore TED talk. tl;dr telling fun stories is the most important thing by far.

@@matthewmcneany In my head, Magnus is the key figure in the whole Horus Humbug, and he's the reason I really got deep into the lore for HH. I own all the books. All of them, lol -- it's a lot of shelf space. He's the "best" of the primarchs because he didn't mean to get suckered into chaos, didn't like it, and wishes most of all for redemption. He's the only one whose fall was actually really tragic. Probably I identify with him so much because I too made similar mistakes -- I thought I could dabble in darkness (drugs sex gambling etc) and that I was strong enough that all those warnings about the dangers were for someone else -- someone weaker and dumber than I was. Darkness consumed me for ten years, and redemption has been a much harder road to travel. My XVth guys are a lighter shade of blue, because I've never believed the Thousand Sons to be anything other than a tragic story -- they're not evil. They're not even misguided. They just made a series of bad decisions.
