XT500 Kick Starter Ratchet Wheel Guide Fix - Restoration Video #3

This video shows the replacement of the kick-starter stop plate (ratchet wheel guide) parts. This, I have heard, is a common issue with these engines.
ENJOY!

Just found my kick ratchet wheel guide in the sump, too. Posted in the group and got answers as well. 😂

Might want to edit the title to give the guide the right name. I'd have found your vid a lot earlier. Keep up the good work. I've watched a lot of your content as I learn/build my 79 Xt500.

Glad you didn’t have to split the case. Yamaha parts seem to be available more than Kawasaki parts. I had a time finding them. Thanks for sharing brother. See you on the next.

That plate always breaks at the same spot, done a few myself, it is possible to end up causing damage to gears, seen that happen, however it is one of the only regular failure parts. XT/TT and SR 500's often get kicked over way more than needed due to owners not knowing the start procedure, once masterd, is possible to hand start, assuming in perfect tune. Splitting the cases is a straightforward process, the Yamabond comes off with acetone, there will likely be some piston fragments that remain, I highly recommend doing so To remove a seized piston I've used a grease gun pumped through a spark plug hole adapter with a grease nipple, the valves need to be closed by removing the cam or rockers if necessary to retain hydraulic pressure, NEVER do at TDC or BDC as a bent rod or worse will be the result Spent 35 years and over 300 000 km riding an XT 500, was never stranded due to mechanical failure.

Hi Chris, the only xt500 i have worked on was 10 yrs ago. It was Lovely bike to work on , it had been stored since 1981. But it had been stored better than any bike in ever seen , and it had been put away correctly. It was as good as the day it was put away . Went to clean the carburettor and found it in perfect condition. Tank was clean , I put a new battery on , changed the oil and filters. And the bike started first kick. I believe that if I only put petrol in it would have started 1st kick. Any way digressing here I will always use a pliers on the tabs it bends them cleanly around the head of the bolt. So what I have seen this is going to be great bike. And as for past discussion about zinc plating I would buy a caswell zinc plating kit.

Sounds like you got a great bike! When they are stored correctly it is a blessing. Thanks for the pointer on the pliers. Also, I checked it out the zinc kit and will definitely get one. Maybe I’ll post a video on my first try at using it. I appreciate your comment Ian!

Excellent video - I was already pre-planning for this issue with my XT but have only bought the stopper, maybe I need to go back and get the other two pieces!

I also found that my cover gasket was stuck on pretty good and will need a new gasket. I soaked my cover in warm dish water and over a two day period scraped at the stuck gasket as the water softened it up. Have fun with your fix!

@@CK-Cycles Does the kick starter mechanism come out easily?

@@HatrickSteele good question. Mine came out easily once I released the spring. You will see where it is seated once your in the engine. After I stopped filming, I needed some guidance on reinstalling the starter and setting the spring. I found this video and it helped me: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aaut2tJtl9a_gdo.html. Once I get everything back together I’ll work the starter slowly by hand without a spark plug installed to see if everything feels correct. Good luck!

I love the videos and its an easy engine to split and rebuild, it is yamabond or threebond you use to seal the centre casing. Every bike i have bought from the states has a kick stopper broke and was lying in the sump. Love the videos you do and thumbs up from me.
