Helpful hint. Put motor on ground sideways and put frame over engine alot easier but good job
Fantastic Hillbilly Engineering, best wishes from Dunedingas Engineering, Edinburgh Scotland. Great to see you people bringing back to life some good old memorable 1980's motorcycles. Wonderful memory's 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Nice build!! Did you double-shim the layshaft in the new motor's transmission? These bikes had a problem with second gear cos the single circlip at the end of the transmission layshaft would get bent from repeated shifting, allowing the layshaft to move further and further until the gear dogs for 2nd gear weren't meshing anymore. Solution is wicked simple - pop the inspection cover for the transmission, pull out the bent circlip, and replace with two of them. If you don't have tiny narrow fingers, a bent needlenose comes in handy.
Beautiful build! Very cool and unique motorcycle. Well worth all the effort to replace the engine, I think.
Great work.....I had MAC headers on my xs750 that only lasted 6 months from new because they break at the cylinder head flange and also caused a bad vibration 'cause they came from the factory with the center downpipe about 3/8" out of whack (Hence the vibration and final weld failure)....They wouldn't honour their warranty....ALSO, I drilled out all the air passages across the cylinder head to remove the casting burrs, I believe I used a 5/16" drill then a small file....Now the air flows far better through the cooling fins....I also had the optional air scoop given to me that attaches to the cam cover for better cooling across the head....Otherwise it's untouched, but sitting in my warm dry shop waiting for me to get younger and ride again.....John (west coast,Can.)
Right on, the 20 min mark is money
Really great job building that Cafe. I have a 1979 XS750 as well that I have profiled on my channel. Was thinking of selling it, now, might just keep it after all. These bikes are so cool and underrated, sound nice, and are really quick. Keep up the good work and continue building.
you did a great job there young man! i have a 1980 yamaha xs850 i restored 4 years now

Hey thanks friend! They are very cool bikes and I'm glad to bring another one back on the street :D
Sounds great, I wish had the skills to do that work.
I had an 81 XS-750 for a few years. Nice handling bike, plenty of speed although it was no speed demon and was very reliable. I bought it used for $500, all it needed was a new primary chain, but the seller didn't know that the 'clunk' as you let off the throttle was the stretched primary chain. Never had to do any wrenching on it after that. Shaft drive took some time to get used to. It was kinda weird. Taking off from a stop and the ass end raised up. Kinda like that feeling you get in a boat as you slow down from on-plane where the stern lifts as the wake catches up with you, but on the bike you're accelerating. That was my one and only shaft drive bike.

XS-750 turned into 850 in 1980. .
I'm no expert but I'm convinced through the entire video including "food for ears" it's missing on one cylinder, my xs400 was missing on one of the two cylinders when I got it but would still idle and ride around but was quite tired, ended up just needing new plugs then lower the idle and its been mint for 4k+ miles since i got it, but at first it rode but just seemed a bit weak (first day). This 850 is missing on a cylinder I'm like 99% sure, especially judging throttle response.
The cam chain should have a master link on it. Maybe your old engine was seized and you couldn’t rotate to get to it?
Is she ok? Nice job!
What jets and needle position are you running? I also have an 850 with the Mikuni carbs off of the 750 and am having a hard time getting it to run well.
I'm working on mine 79 I bought it ,so far spent 200 dollars getting it work
It’s a very nice work. Can you please tell me what kind of wheel you used on that?
what front end is that and where did you get the rear cowl and seat?
The old points and capacitors were in the750 D and 2D I got a F from 79 and it had the electrocic ignition ; )
from the front, it sounds as it had a exhauxt gasket leak the tsit tsit tsit sound
Nice! Great movie, loved itg. Facepalm when it tipped, but I happens. Engine in and out is normally a two-man job, well done. Maybe use new gaskets when assambling, but I guess its a budget-balance-decision. Kind regards, XS-750-2D (cafe) owner en Denmark

Hey Mathias I facepalmed as well! We luckily only broke the left hand footrest off which was cheap to replace. Gaskets - I highly agree, I usually don't skimp on gaskets but I wanted to get it running and make sure the engine was good before throwing goodies at it. Tak for kommentaren og kør sikkert bror !!
A detail I just crave on my old triple; when passing in a tunel. rev it at around 3,700 and the sound in there just explodes 🤣
Nice one! I've got an XS850SH I've been slowly working on for a while. Love the look of that fat front tire. What is it?

any clue where they got that seat from? love the build

It’s a custom built seat but it seems possible to duplicate. The base is plywood and the angled section is also plywood, those are glued and screwed together. Then there is a layer of foam and the pleated fabric is stretched over the top and stapled to the bottom. There’s a trim ring of fabric that’s also stapled to the perimeter of the seat to give that finished look. If you go to the part where we tipped the bike you can see a better shot of the underside LOL thanks for the comment 🤙
Hey man do you know what side bags those are? Look awesome on this bike!

They were custom made by someone on Etsy, if you look for “motorcycle side bags” on there you’ll see a few people who make various styles similar to these, then you can reach out to the seller see if they’ll make you exactly what you want.

@@hillbilly-engineering awesome, I’ll do that! Will be a very convenient way of hiding the rats nest of wiring under my seat 😂
Anybody know where the saddle bags are from?

They were custom made, but ordered from Etsy. You can give some sellers the dimensions you want and they’ll make it for you
