    No way, last upload 5 years ago? This guy was my favorite dual sport KZreadr. Hermit your videos were/still are awesome. I watched your videos as a teenager in highschool, now I’m married with a kid, and getting back into riding with a drz400. You should come back!

    Hey hermit, I hope your ok. I got into dual sporting years ago and your channel was a major influence when I was just getting started. I haven’t been riding in a few years but just thought of you tonight. Sad to see it’s been so long since you’ve uploaded. Us viewers would love to hear from you even if it’s just a quick update. Good speed and God Bless.

    I really wanted an XR400 when I decided to got back into riding. When I was in 9th grade I got a new xr250 and I was my all time favorite bike. I love 2 strokes, but the old xr’s just did everything well. I wound up getting an ‘07 450x that was in great condition, but soon learned that it wasn’t set up for lower speed technical riding. I can’t decide if I should install a rekluse clutch or pass it along and get back into the hunt for a good 400.

    Hello Hermit, found your videos helpful and informative. Recently found a 1 owner 2000 XR 400 out of the Boulder area. Came well equipped with the extra tank Upgraded suspension And a nice rack that carried a couple of waterproof Pelican boxes for touring. I spent some time going to your blogs regarding the pumper carb. I have one on the way from XRS only. I was hoping to find out where you landed on your jetting and main jet sizes. Thanks

    Black and Gold good point i always thought about black and gold for my bike but it reminded me of the Indy 500 cars back in the 80's there was a Lotus indy racing car it was sweet.... I don't know if you ever saw it but I remember that as a kid... Its funny but that was an 80's thing...

    If you wanna build a nice 400 here is what you need... CRF450 fork swap, IMS oversize tank, Hotcam (stage depends on carb setup), Mikuni Pumper carb, 400ex bottom end (if you become a cry baby and need E-Start), skid plate is a must, Baja Designs makes AWESOME lighting alternatives, steering damper, electric cooling fan (if you ride in the West) rear suspension (C-Cycle Suspension does great work), but most important, the 440 Big Bore kit. 👍

    Thanks, Hermit. I was waiting for this one. More questions? How about: What did you do for gearing? More details on selecting and fitting the generic rear fender? What were the tradeoffs with the three exhausts? More on the pumper vs stock? Halo vs. Halo H4? Handlebar bend? What about suspension setup and seat height that people complain about? Did you get DOT tires or temporarily install the deathwings? And when did you start naming your bikes? Anyway, thanks!

  • @HermitDaVlog

    @HermitDaVlog

    You are high maintenance. Gearing 14/45. The rear fender is off ebay sold as an XR400 fender. I believe it's a copy of the super moto fender they used on a version of the bike sold only in Japan. The stock exhaust with three 1/4 holes drilled into it was not free enough. Powercore was just too loud. Q4 is still too loud, but as good as I'll get I guess. Haven't ridden the stock carb enough to know how I feel about it, might rebuild it just to find out. Never played Halo or Halo4. CR High Bend. .46kg race tech springs in the front. Not right for my weight, but balances with the stock rear spring. Stock height seems find to me. I'm 6' with a 32" inseam. Running AC10s just because they came in stock sizes and are DOT. They break loose easy which is fun, but maybe not the best performance. They also seem to wear faster than the MT21s. I always name the bikes for fun, but I don't call them by name, since they're not pets and more people would know what I meant by saying XR400 than "Trigger"

    You’re WELL-versed w/ XRs, and Appreciate your content. I’m a ‘Honda Guy’, and really drawn to the XR for my first Dual Sport. The challenge that I face is a R knee reconstruction, which doesn’t lend itself well to kickstarting on trails. Also, I prefer the power range of 400ish CCs; but, as an older guy, I’m always motivated to minimize Weight when possible. Do you have any thoughts on this (dilemma) ? Thank you for the content 🙏

    Just moved to Castle Rock, CO. Haven't ridden a dirt bike in a long time. Where do suggest I go to ride easier trails and such? Thanks.

    Hmmm, tough. Right now I'd keep the XR400, but that could be novelty. It's for sure the most fun and capable on the dirt, but nothing special on pavement.

    Hey Hermit, I've been throwing money, hand over fist at a '93 XR200, and I don't know why. It's almost finished, I really enjoy working on bikes and learning how the parts all come together, but there's melodrama surrounding that bike (and to be honest all of my dad's projects could fill a novel with melodrama) - it's causing a lot of undue stress on me. What should I do? I don't own my own bike and I don't have space to keep one, either, but I also don't want to just walk away from riding dirt bikes. Any advice, even an I don't know, will be greatly appreciated.

    Hello good video. I want to buy a second bike for adventure rides. I am between Dr 350 (because it has kick start and 6 gears , air cooled, but the seat...could be softer ) Xr 250 (also air cooled, 6 gears and kick start) or Xr 400 (only 5 gears) Between the XR 's wich one you prefer? Thank you.

    those hand guards look like they're made out of painted popsicle sticks, and look like they'd protect your hands about as good as a double layer of Reynolds wrap

    Nice bike, what was the conclusion on the XR400 is it the best dual sport you currently own?

    It's the most fun to ride for sure. It's not as comfortable on pavement as the other bikes, but I don't ride pavement, I tolerate it.
