XP-Pen Artist 15.6 Review (8192 levels of pressure version)

My Cintiq alternatives list: bradcolbow.com/reviews/wacom-c...
This product: amzn.to/2DrL4TK
The latest 15 inch tablet by XP-Pen is pretty good. It comes with the new battery free 8192 level of pressure pen. It's a lot smother than I expected it to be and overall is a good drawing experience on par with many of Wacom's older Cintiq products.

I know, such a pity he left. But not going to make publicity of other review channels at Brad's, for logical and politeness reasons, netiquette... (although he went all the way and did so in a video with the ones he likes more! Lol... if that doesn't show confidence....). But yeah, there are good ones. (right now I have two in mind, for example). IMO, the more the merrier, and that those others exist, does not remove a chance of a visit and like or whatever to his videos
as the cintiq alternatives are getting better and better, this guy right over here is getting bettererer as well

TypicalBoyy yeah, I will be interested if he makes storytime animation.
XP-Pen just added another product the "Artist Display 16 Pro". This time they went back to a rechargeable pen and now they have 3 models with the exact display size "15.6" ... A few years ago we couldn't find a reliable Cintiq alternative, now there are too many we don't know which one to choose! 0_0
I've been waiting for this review. Thank you so much Brad 😆
I just ordered this tablet and I'm glad to see it overall holds up well from an experienced artist :3
My birthday is coming up in about a week and I've been really wanting an Artist Tablet for the longest time. I've notice this tablet which has a really good price compared to other tablets, so thanks for the little review of this tablet. It's really helpful in helping figure out what would be perfect for me
Still one of the best reviewers on the web. Just solid information, and honest ups and downs.
Ordered one of these a couple days back, glad to hear you didn't encounter any massive issues! Now just to wait for it to arrive...

I can't imagine myself bringing it in a suitcase. The tablet's size is about 17" x 11". Much bigger than a standard laptop. But I guess it's possible if you have to. The cables are few so that's good for portability.

Pikslzplit The not so retro fagita | Yeah I think it's a bit exaggerated. The tablet CAN be portable since it is THIN and LIGHT but it's big (I really enjoy working on the large surface by the way). Though might be a bit tricky for storage when travelling.
Something changed in your review video process, it's more energetic and more "alive". Good changes. Oh, and do more animated talking characters straight from your reviewed product, that's awesome xD
LOVE the new video style! I adore your animations ❤️

I've been watching your videos to pick the best drawing devices for my son and daughter. I came to my decision and went to buy this tablet display at amazon. I almost clicked the button to buy it but remembered, I didn't get there through your link!!!!!! I've fixed that. You should get credit for the sale. You've made me a very informed buyer and I can't wait to enjoy all the art my minions create. Thanks for the help and the laughs along the way. FYI I home school and we went with a mix of 2 Surface 3 and two 2018 ipads with pen and pencil to go along with them. This is quite a testament to your reviews because I am about as Anti Apple as they come lol. But they are the right tools for the job.

I just got this. IAF is excellent. Responsive no lag no jitter. PSCC2018. Pen accuracy is spot on. Parallax only exist on top right edge which is no problem it's not drawing area. Powered by usb. Neat cabling. Latest driver is January 2018. No complaint so far.

Elliott Prendy it's for being plugged in to a computer where you have your software... the wacom's cintiq companion and wacom mobilestudio are independant with built-in windows
Love the review Brad! One question though. As I understand it, the USB-C cable branches out into an HDMI and two USB-A cable right? Is it possible to use a USB-C to USB-C cable to minimize the cable clutter?
Can you turn the tablet 180 degree for left handed use? Because of the buttons. Or does it have a clear "direction"?
4:59 I understand that a little too well, I was trying to use the stand that I got when I got my artist 12, I clipped my finger and it hurt for like a week lol
what's with these pen displays shipping without stands? curse you wacom for setting a precedent :'(
I’m unsure if I should get the Huion Kamvas GT-156HD v2 or the XP Pen Artist 15.6 they’re both pretty much exactly the same
Have you ever experienced scratching with other tablets? Odly, I scratched my Artisul d13 even though it has glass screen. I never had any scratches with my old huion GT 190
So I watch all these reviews. They are awesome. I have several options that I rotate using. What is your personal favorite device currently to work on?
I had this device a month ago and noticing parallax that the cursor hides a little bit in under my pen that i had to cut a little the tip of my nibs to deal with it
Brad, thanks for sharing your thoughts; they are appreciated. :-) One think I do wish you’d add to your screen reviews is to tell the actual width and height of the screen. Sure, it’s 15.5”, but that’s doesn’t really tell me how big the screen really is in X and Y terms. ;-)
Bought one but had to return it. Could never get the pen to calibrate correctly. Parallax was terrible. Even when I could calibrate the pen correctly, it never stayed that way. Every time I turned the display back on, the parallax was bad.
I'm still waiting on a Huion 156 v2 review before I decide
HI Brad, Which one do you recommand between the Artist 15.6 and the Huion GT156HD V2 ? Thank you for sharing these reviews.
hey, i just got my uncle's xp pen artist 15.6 display tablet yesterday, and i keep getting a cursor offset problem whenever i power up my computer, and it need to get calibrated over and over again everytime i wanna use it. is there maybe some tips regarding this problem? thx in advance
I just got the xp pen 22e pro, it seems okay so far, I'm having a bit difficulty figuring out a good pressure curve right now, it's good with light lines and heavy lines but can't seem to get a good transition in between.
your best video yet!
Question: how do you take the pen out? I just purchased this and the pen seems to be in this large cylinder case. I unscrew the top and see the end of the pen, but it doesn't slide out easily. Am I to force-pull it out? I don't want to break anything :S
Now you can review the XP-Pen Artist 16 Pro

@thebradcolbow

Is that the one that came out last year? I already reviewed it.
@3polygons
6 жыл бұрын
ehm...that one, -just checked - seems some months old, while I believe the one we refer here is newer (much better) It's two models, 16 and 16 pro. But...why should anyone care? Well..one main matter : Adobe RGB 92% gamut covered is most sure not in the 16 older model. Or they'd have announced it prominently like they do in this new Pro. Indeed main critic that bothers me about XP-Pen gama, till recently, was some complaints of people being more into color accuracy (I know you are less into that, but me working with certain type of clients and that, need to work with a calibrated screen (calibrated by hardware but also allowing a lot of accuracy and gama by doing this to a screen that by default is even nicely calibrated) keeping color accurate and consistent, specially for not adding extra error factor with the already bad situation of POD printers, which are digital, not cmyk based workflows.) . Of course, just heard in one of your reviews that Artisul 16, which might be a winner tablet, already supported 94%, lol... anyway, at those levels is around the same and more a matter of how whoever did the tests in the lab. Neither a super color expert, but need the accuracy for printed illustration. Even only for screen workflows and sticking to the rock solid sRGB, you still get punished, even if not knowing, with less accuracy or minor ability to reproduce colors. Also, the pen, the pro is 8k levels of presure, the one you reviewed is 2k... other thing, very tied to pen line accuracy AND drawing lag... the reports per second....200 in the one you reviewed, 266 in this Pro new one... quite significant. The adobe RGB new thing is not in this 15.6 version, but yep the 8k levels. They have gone this path to make difference among pro and non pro I guess. IF they move this features, be it XP-Pen or Artisul (you say it has less jiter than any other, key for me) to a 22 inches model..that'd be my next purchase. Your reviewed one , I think (imo, hit on the Specification tab, in both) : www.xp-pen.com/goods/show/id/187.html#tab2 The new Pro : xp-pen.com/goods/show/id/251.html#tab2 Indeed, they want to sell you the new one, so they emphasize the difference : new 16 Pro is 92 % Adobe RGB gamut. Old 16 is 74% . Which ain't bad, better definitely than the average laptop screen, or even the usual consumer grade desktop monitor. But still, reported by several using the XP 22, in which am more interested for a pro use, were complaining about the color accuracy and difficulty to get the thing to be well calibrated to get a color one could at least deal with. (that said, I worked for 7 years as one and only graphic design and web coder with a horrid basic Philips, and calibrated by software, knew its color errors, was a bit weird but could handle it ...and worse, as game artist, 1 year for mobile games, the monitor couldn't even do smooth gradients when too many colors were displayed at once in the screen, lol) For serious color illustration work, this matter is an issue. For only or mainly professional B/W inking, absolutely no issue, in any way, which I believe is the case why you require less of that. As you know, with color there are MANY grades, levels of accuracy that people demand. For just web page design there's close to none, starting from just a good consumer grade one (depends on the designer, too). And I am in an intermediate point... not as a regular graphic game artist, as I was before, but neither color crazy as can be a photo lab high end pro. Just an illustrator that needs to see always happening this : I send samples colored to the whoever person, he/she say this is "too orange", or... is aqua green, not lime green....Then I tell 'em to trust me, do a print test in a POD printer I know I more or less can rely in non blatant error in colors, and then they realize is what I said... users screens are by average terrible. So, if one has the color well, knows can print well. At least...not too far. Again, I ain't no color guru in terms of calibration, but enough to ensure the accuracy I NEED, not an absolute mathematically perfect result. If you get screens that add error to the equation - or have them but with zero calibration- _might_ (not necessarily) run into problems. What made me purchase a more expensive monitor was a logo very in the limit of being a tone almost red-orange while in reality it was red-magenta...It was not sth I created, but the typical crap screen only source that I needed to fix... and both my room bulbs and my monitor, and zero calibration, were they real culprits: I only had to discover it, but helped me to set up a much better system. In general, while getting to do color tests and calibration would make your reviews waaaay longer, and loose there a 99% of the audience, is just nice to have an eye on those specs... (there are sites that test which of that is really true, but at least, you get some sort of written compromise of achieving those levels)...or...even just for you, to feel a bit better about a pen-display for just your own use.... I'd WAY much opt for one that at least ensures a 92 or 94% Adobe RGB that one that doesn't... as chances are it'd be 74 % as much, as was the case with the previous 16. There are more redundant listed features in products, but this is not one of them. Saying that a monitor type is LCD, or... that has 39.483.949.829.343.000:1 of contrast ratio supported does not really add anything over other product....typically, as those colors are interpolated, much more of a realistic value is when they give you the real value, in both pen displays being btw 1000:1 contrast ratio, which ain't terrible. (Below 800 is terrible, and below 600, you'r lucky if you see a gradient without cuts, or noise, and if you don't see all light tones burnt to white, and no subtle dark colors, all pitch black). But when you see listed 92% Adobe RGB, if they are saying it and is far from true, that'd be a royal issue for them : I expect that screen to have more chances to be good in color. Also, you need to see a fast refresh response, around 16ms as much, 20 or 25 is too much, you'll see ghosting and blur when scrolling text. In pen... the pressure levels, as you know, not that key... but reports per seconds is, and it's upgrading from 200 to 266. There are other matters that highly affect your illustrations and that can lead you to issues. An dthose are never listed. The screen uniformity, that is, if image is uniform in illumination across all panel. If not, the same color can be seen slightly different in several areas of the illustration, being the same color. I've seen extreme aberrations of this in monitors at companies, and really can lead to probs. You have also leaking light, noticed mostly seen a movie in the dark, are those light leaks than make the borders of the screen look not plain black, even light grey. This can also lead you to issues when evaluating the overall contrasts and lights in an illustration when looking at it full screen. And of course, other not able to be listed matters, like how much accuracy is lost in pen device when approaching to the edge area of the pen display, borders of the screen. As you say in your videos, no biggie because rarely will need to do that. But a prob if is too extreme for a fast access to the menus. Those are the type of things you get warned of in 14 pages length reviews at Tomshardware. Or better for monitors, a pair out there that specialize just in monitors, and have specialized labs for testing screens, etc. Yeah, that's all way too much. But I purchased my main monitor after reading a bunch of that...then , have it calibrated and calibrate often, not much of a hassle, and it avoids probs I had before in greater number.

Amazing review! Hey, how can I get this brush that you're using on the video? Thanks and congrats for the amazing video, the best review for xpen
Now, this is a pretty niche question, but do you know if this works with Flash CS3? I could not run anything older than cs6 on the Surface Pro 3 and up due to driver issues, and I was curious if these are capable. Great review btw!
i just purchased the gaomon pd1560, but seeing the scratches issues with this one... i have a question, does the gaomon pd1560 have that issue?
Would it still work if I was able to find a screen protector that covered the whole screen?
is the parallax concerning? Or can you easily get used to it?
Hullo! Am 'doing my homework' in preparation for buying an input tablet, and I am curious as to whether this one will work-- Instead of using it with drawing programs, will this allow me to 'draw over' presentations or other slide types to annotate in real time? Thank you for your time & trouble... Blessed Be, & Peace! 🙏☮
I see the improvement :D
Does anyone know if this would still work with a VGA to HDMI convert cable? My current desktop doesn't have HDMI ports.. :(
Recently got this for Christmas and I’m loving it! It’s my first cintiq and I enjoy using it. A con that I’ve experienced in the beginning was frequent lag, I’m pretty sure that this is my art program’s fault and not the tablet though since photoshop was always very laggy on me. Luckily that problem is fixed and it is working way better. As far as I experienced, I don’t have a lot to say about it except that it’s a really nice tablet and really big.

I'm thinking of buying a tablet. I haven't bought a drawing tablet before and don't know which one would be the best. I'm currently stuck between the GAOMON PD1560 and this one, the XP-Pen Artist 15.6. Which one is better in your opinion?
Gutted to hear that parallax is bad having been told by XP that parallax was almost gone! Without that issue being fixed what’s the point of the updated model. Wish you would have shown a close up of this Brad.
Does this have less or more wobble than the 16 pro version

I'm wondering between this one and huion camvas pro 13. ( i've never used drawing tablet before) What is your recommendation ?
Hey i was wondering if u can make a video for what laptop u can use with a tablet monitor
About to buy this thing, but I don't think amazon.com affiliate links carry over to .ca :( gonna try anyways
I have a problem with tablet, when im.tilting the pen its draws big dot and dont even touch screen, its rlly annoyong and if some1 knows how to fix it i will be very greatfull
Can you use this without plugging into a pc or laptop like a standalone for like travelling
Can you touch-rotate the screen while drawing or do you need keyboard to rotate the canvas.?
Can you please tell me what is off with the color the tablet shows? I know that you have said it at the beginning of the video but as I am not from english-speaking country I couldn't catch it ;-;
Does this have to be connected to a computer to work? I'm trying to figure out how drawing tablets function.

Same. Did you ever find out the answer??? I’ve been looking for a portable tablet and I can’t tell if this one can be on its own and not need a computer
I'm having problems with the pressure of my pen... Can someone please help? 😬 I downloaded the driver in my PC but it doesn't have a great pressure on the pen
Anyone can help me? my express keys dont work in photoshop :( like i've set one for ctrl z and it do nothing. in other programs work well
Huh. I picked up an Artist 13 last week and have been loving it, except the digitizer is defective (pen doesn't work on lower CM of screen, or bottom right 2x1 CM). I haven't noticed any wonky pressure, but after seeing it in your video here when you mentioned it, I tested it out in PS and sure enough, it's kinda wonky! I've been considering upgrading it to the 15.6 or 16 Pro, but those aren't in stock in Amazon warehouses, and probably won't be before my one-month return window expires. So unfortunately I may have to reconsider and go with an Artisul, Huion, or other tablet display.
Could you make a review about the best screen recording softwares, please?
Is the colors on the 22 E Pro better Or is the 15,6 better?
Do you HAVE to have this hooked up to a monitor?
Is it possible to buy a screen protector if I’m buying this tablet I don’t want to get a scratch on my screen?
