The athleticism and skill this takes is really impressive. Its great stunt work. And I bet that guy has phenomenal kata. And anyone who wants to talk shot about the screams? I wish my students had that spirit in thier kiai. But that sword is made of aluminum and weighs nothing. I can totally appriciate this for what it is. So long as it pretends to be no more that it is. Really cool hakama either way.

@kennethAllgeier Listen, dude. In a way, I'm really flattered that you liked this comment enough to copy it here, but this isn't a great way to use it. This was a direct response, a few down in a comment thread, to a set of specific and incorrect claims made by someone else. When you post it like this, sans-context, it reads like an unhinged street preacher or an r/IamVerySmart post. The comments here are filled with other people making the same general point; people claiming that XMA is meant for combat are in such a minority that they practically don't exist; and the uploader openly admits that "...XMA is for attributes not real combat." Whatever generalized message you might be able to pull from that quote loses all of it's persuasive power because it sounds like you're tilting at windmills and talking to yourself... in a sea of other people... tilting at the same windmills... and also talking to themselves...

You mean the fact that Batojutsu is a interchangable word for Iaijutsu? which is where Iaido came from after the japanese had to reform their martial arts after the treaty with the USA. Batojutsu would look nothing like what this guy is doing anyway not even in their practice kata forms. This flashy dance is a modern thing to make it look cool and to probably train hand eye coord more as well as fitness at the cost of bad form. I say bad form because most of the cuts here are not aligned for example and also the reverse blade grip attacks which rarely ever have practical use except to be flashy.

@@reggiemorel4554 By your logic " artistic expression " cannot be be the correct definition of the Japanese word Kata . “The term “martial art” is thrown around a lot without any idea of its meaning. “Martial” means “war” or “conflict.” In a martial arts dojo we train for conflict. Without physical and psychological conflict there is no “martial” in martial art. Fear, to be overcome, must be confronted and experienced. Fear must become part of your life experience. Appreciation of fear and the appropriate reaction when confronting fear is the sign of a mature martial artist. Are not your dojo mates and teacher the ones that you should ultimately trust when learning to confront your fears? In a real dojo, they are. Remember that most people who call themselves martial artists are nothing of the sort. Most dojos are not martial arts dojos either. They are glorified social clubs thriving in an environment of emotional stimulation which is heightened by a false or extremely limited perception of danger. When real danger shows itself in such a dojo, the participants run for cover. In a real dojo the participants run towards the conflict” Yukiyoshi Takamura, Takamura-ha Shindo Yoshin-ryu
