It's 1/6 of China, about 3X the size of France. From google: 1.665 million km² Xinjiang is 1.66 million square kilometers (641,000 square miles) making it nearly four times the size of the U.S. state of California, and one-sixth the size of all of China.

Love the freedom that the people in Xinjiang enjoy. Can ride the scooters around without the cumbersome helmet, ride 3 to a scooter, cross the streets at your convenience, move around at anytime of the day or night without fear of being robbed, raped or murdered. Freedom is in the air everywhere in Xinjiang.

I think Kashgar is not a remote place in Xinjiang, so parents should have no excuses for not enrolling their children in schools. Moreover, basic education in itself is free, only the misc items have to be paid. If you google for some old documentaries, there had been huge efforts by educators who go to some poor Uyghur or even Tajik villages (even in remote areas) to persuade their traditional parents to send their children to schools, and dormitories provided for those who live faraway in remote mountainous regions, eg the Pamir Plateaus. So great strides have been achieved in youngsters education, though it's still not at 100% literacy rate, it's at about 99% currently.
