Xi Jinping warns Putin to ‘hold back’ on using nuclear weapons | Rana Mitter

“It may just be that one of the reasons that Russia is holding back from using tactical nukes.”
Xi Jinping may be the reason why Putin has not used nuclear weapons as it is “a red line” for the president of China, says Professor Rana Mitter.

His commentary is so responsive, pertinent and lucid that he is a gift for any interviewer. His expertise in his own field makes him a fluently confident interviewee and contrary to some trollish remarks I have read here he is absolutely on the money. China surely does not want an Empire in the conventional sense but wants a lot of smart power or influence. It is in step with Russia concerning authoritarianism. But we must hopefully believe that Xi has imposed a red line Putin may not cross by outlawing the use of even tactical nuclear weapons.

For China, persuading Russia requires considerable courage. Because China and Russia share a border, if Russia gets angry at China, China will fall into a great crisis. Therefore, China has never dared to make any demands on Russia, but only maintains peace between China and Russia. But once Russia uses nuclear weapons, China will not be able to accept it, so China has no other choice but to boldly persuade Russia.

China’s economic growth is plateauing, unemployment is up, investment and exports are down, and internal consumption is still low. China’s massive real estate and construction markets, which make up a quarter of the entire economy, are rapidly deflating. Meanwhile, China’s debt burden is growing and is already much larger than that of the United States.
