The Harvard-Kennedy School have pinched this Professor from the orbit of the University of Oxford, and I can understand why. His commentary is so responsive, pertinent and lucid that he is a gift for any interviewer. His expertise in his own field makes him a fluently confident interviewee and contrary to some trollish remarks I have read here he is absolutely on the money. China surely does not want an Empire in the conventional sense but wants a lot of smart power or influence. It is in step with Russia concerning authoritarianism. But we must hopefully believe that Xi has imposed a red line Putin may not cross by outlawing the use of even tactical nuclear weapons.

China’s economic growth is plateauing, unemployment is up, investment and exports are down, and internal consumption is still low. China’s massive real estate and construction markets, which make up a quarter of the entire economy, are rapidly deflating.
