I think the Series S and Game Pass will sell like crazy in 2021. $299 is a crazy low price for entry level gaming. it will probably play most AAA titles at 1080p/60fps I think which is fine for 90% of casual gamers. It's small enough that it literally fits anywhere. Just a really impressive entry level machine all the way around imo

ikr, I previously got a digital edition One S to save some money, thinking I'd just play game pass games only. Didn't realize how many of my older games I couldn't play without the disk drive, and also that it's so easy to find physical current gen games for cheap. Definitely gonna go with a Series X this time considering how amazing the backwards compatibility is at this point (compared to the PS5, which will likely never get PS3 support).

@@bern9642 They definitely will not add an external disc reader. It's a $10 part maybe they could have just put in the console, so they were deliberate in omitting it to force you to Game Pass or re-buying your old Xbox games.

With the Series S, I think it's mostly going to come down to how much effort the developer puts into it. We've already seen some say they won't have ray tracing on Series S and others can make it work. Target may be 1440p, but resolutions are going to be all over the place, again, depending on the developer. All of the hardware cutbacks are to be expected if not targeting 4k just from how much more information has to be processed for 4k textures. At least having an equivalent CPU architecture and SSD, game design won't have to be compromised even though visuals will be compromised. For someone like me who never ponied up for the latest gen PC components and typically built my PCs with components that were a year or two old, a Series S follows a lot of the same philosophy. If you just want to be able to play everything and don't care about the highest settings or framerates possible, the Series S is a good value.

Exactly. I got mine for €250, it is a steal. Hopefully devs won't be forced by execs to ignore the Series S and its power; it can definitively run any game at 60 FPS as long as there is some tune-down on graphics, but some companies like CD Projekt RED just lazily copy-pastes the Series X version, lowers resolution and locks the game to the 30 FPS it was always capable of doing.

Quick resume should be optional and if opted out the reserved hard drive cache should be released.

I would prefer that the feature was clearer to users. I'd like to see a little pause icon next to games that are ready to be quick resumed.

Fascinating video, one of the best from Richard ! You can feel the genuine enthusiasm and awe from his delivery. Also: "Elasticity" Brilliant. Never saw anyone using that word for tech talk.

The main reason I chose Series S: availability. I could actually get a Series S at retail price, and being able to actually get a console goes a long way into helping to decide which system a lot of players will get.

Same. Couldn't find an series x for almost a year and I'm not going to finance a game console. Never even saw an ss until last week Walmart had like 12 of them. I'm happy with my purchase. I only have a 1080p tv and paid retail.

So glad to hear the menuing is so much improved. Really felt like a mess on the XboxX, so sluggish, felt kinda like win vista.

​@@ggss1176 60fps vs 30fps, that's where XSS shines over X1X right now when rdna2 features aren't used. It's 8gb vs 9gb ram, not 8 vs 12. But when devs start to use BCpack, sampler feedback streaming, mesh shaders and machine learning, XSS ram will have an effective size much bigger than X1X. X1X would probably need 16-20gb to do the same. The biggest drawback in XSS is back compat not using X1X versions IMO.

@Truth Returns Depends on needs, this video does a good job making the distinction. I'd say if you a primarily gaming on PS5 then yeah, this is a good buy. But if you have decked out 4K high-end TV, well you should be able to afford both PS5 and Series X as the X will provide the better quality visuals. But ultimately, it's up for consumers to decide.

Great review us usual Richard + DF! I'm 1 week into owning a Series S and I've no regrets whatsoever. My biggest concern was storage but I've got 15 games installed (only a handful of which are Indie titles) and that's more than enough to keep me busy for a few months. I've no doubt that in time I'll need more storage, and on paper the PS5 digital looks like a better investment, but the key difference is Game Pass Ultimate. Having taken advantage of the promo deal I've got access to all of those titles for £40 a year, at the moment I don't think Sony can compete with that.

I could listen to Rich all day. Excellent video as always!

I think it should be mentioned that with the xbox series S|X you can store your next gen games on an external hard drive. Granted, you won't be able to play them from it and you need to move them back to the internal SSD if you ever wanted to play them but it's still a good thing that it's possible so you don't absolutely have to delete games if you're running out of storage (which you definitely will)

I'm enjoying my Series S alot so far but i wish Devs would patch in options to unlock 60 fps for older games. Sad to see Series S capable of it but can't.

@@ahmeddasavage9869 Well, on the Xbox One X they had some Xbox 360 games which were enhanced to take advantage of the extra power. Better frame rates, better resolution, upscaled video and so on. The Xbox Series X maintains these upgrades, but the Xbox Series S will play those games as if they are running on an Xbox One original, meaning they won't be upgraded from their original versions at all.

Fallout 3 runs better and loads faster on the Series X compared to S, and Final Fantasy XIII has all of it's pre-rendered cutscenes re-exported at a much higher resolution than was possible on 360 (due to the limited disk size)

I’m getting the feeling we’ll be getting more before the 19th, the second release date.

This is perfect for me. I only play Skyrim and FIFA religiously. Everything else I beat and never play again. This is the perfect box for me.

Really good reviews, I think the first vloggers to actually talk about the pros and cons in an objective manner, looking at who each console is best tailored for and I can't say I disagree with your conclusion.

Another good video Rich, I must admit the shot of the series s next to switch shocked me a bit, as did the shot next to original PlayStation! Agree MS have made great machines (I have a series x) but they really did need some decent first party games at launch. Just a couple of showcases would have made a big difference

Thanks for the great review, I always enjoy watching your well-structured and informative videos. One thing I would like to address is your assumption that the PS5 digital edition will likely be produced in lower quantities than the disc drive edition. I personally don't think that will be the case, because Sony has a huge interest in getting customers to buy the digital edition and thus making them dependent on the Playstation Store. The revenue from game sales will not only make up for the losses from the hardware sales but also generate more profit for them in the long run than if they'd push for physical game availability. The rather big price difference of $100 between the digital and the disc version also speaks for Sony pushing for a closed digital games market, as this difference clearly can't be justified just by the omission of the disc drive which doesn't make up such a big part of the overall production cost.

Check that Radeon card behind rich 👀 there was an rtx 3080 there not so long ago. Does it mean we are geting a 6800/6800xt review soon?

One of the main reasons why I switched to Xbox from PS is the UI/UX I absolutely love the direction the Xbox team went with the ease of use. The community help make it what it is by listening to us on their forums and responding back to us.

This was a brilliant in depth, informative video and after much deliberation I think you may have finally made my mind up on which console I will be investing in thanks to this video. The series S. Being a gamer who usually just plays 1 multiplayer game instead of multiple different games, I don't see the storage being a major issue for myself and although some times it may be a slight hindrance, say if I go to a friends and they want to play a game that isn't installed then that could be a slight issue but overall not one that will make me hate the console... I have had my original xbox one s 500gb console since the very start so have gotten use to the storage Space alongside the ever growing size of modern games. I also haven't used a physical game disc in a long long time, usually buying games off cdkeys as a usually much cheaper alternative to the xbox marketplace. My thought Process for buying the series s is also that I don't have a high enough spec TV or monitor to achieve the max potential from a series x, so to conclude, thanks to the help of the video I have now made my decision, thanks for your help 👍

The console isn’t much bigger than the switch and it’s tv attachment. You could easily toss it in a bag and keep it moving. The fact that I’m pretty transient and move a lot it’s size was the deciding factor for me to buy it.

According to other DF kind youtubers, Valhalla 1620p 30fps vs dynamic 4k (1800p mostly) 60fps.

my rtx laptop can already run JC3 max setting @ 80 - 120 fps, no need to play console version which is still capped to 30 fps.

The Series S is a really good emulation machine. Just pay the $20 Developer fee and you can emulate up to Dreamcast now with promises of PS2 and GCN emulation coming soon.

I have the Series S and have to say I agree with everything in this video. I LOVE it. No, it's not a powerhouse, but I knew that going in, and I'm connected to a 65" 4K display. I have a PS5 to do the heavy lifting, but the Series S just has a charm to it that I think most recent consoles are missing.

Question on something I am still confused about: Ori and the Will of the Wisps supports 4K/120 FPS gameplay, but will it work at 120 FPS at resolutions below 4K if you have a TV with a 120 Hz panel but no HDMI 2.1? For example, can I play this at 120 FPS at 1080P or 1440P on XSX with a non-HDMI 2.1 TV or does it only support 120 FPS at 4K on an HDMI 2.1 TV?

as a hardcore Xbox gamer that got the Xbox series S I'm in love with it. I'm fine with not having a big hard drive because I have a external I can switch things back and forth with. and I think the graphics are really impressive on the S

HI digital foundry i loved this review , one critique , one of the biggest features of the new controller is the share button. It would have been nice to have talk about how game streaming is on the device. The "share " comparison between S and X. But otherwise great review , i am getting an S as i already getting a disc PS5. So it will be mostly a gamepass machine for me.

I've never thought of egg boxes as some kind of value added way to present something.

Hey DF +Digital Foundry ! Maybe it's time! ... *It's time to re-evaluate Series S after one year!* Is it the forespoken 1440p power house or maybe "just" a 1080p 60 fps option? Is it the forgotten Series console or maybe *one of the best available options for console and PC players in 2020/21/22 with a a look on price-performance/ value and availability (!) ?* The prices in Germany are mostly 280 € or on Ebay 220 € for used ones. How fast does a PC need to be to match Series S performance in games with and without RT? And how much would it cost (with SSD and controller)? Are there even any games available for it? Does Series S need "exclusive titles" or does it provide an even more broadly use case scenario. And maybe you could add in some (legal) emulation option, if you want. With Game Pass and that emulation stuff that’s been happening on Xbox with Dev Mode, I’m considering ditching my dust collecting switch and getting the S as a companion to my PS5?

So I’m a nutshell the differences are more subtle then major.

It would be nice if external blue ray player can be used with digital edition of ps5 or xbox s, like an update option for future when you can like we often do with PC.

The #1 focus with the Series S was to get more people away from owning their games, and be able to force the gamers to require Game Pass and ensure they would purchase all of there games digitally through the XBox Store. Why do you think the Series S was so much easier to get ahold of than the Series X was. They banked on 'if we make the Series X less available, that will force them to purchase the S rather than have to wait'. Most took the bait and didn't even realize what they were loosing/doing to gaming.

Rich, thanks for this! I was actually wondering when you guys would talk about the S. It was extremely informative, and I agree with you regarding how cool the S looks. It was the only one I managed to get my hands on, but I love how small it is, and the games play fairly well. I am hopeful that, as the generation moves forward, the developers push the S to its limits and really show us what it can do!

If someone does have a low income the series s is perfect because let's face it in 3 years you know both Sony and Microsoft are going to release the Ps5 Pro/Xbox series double XX so it may be a better solution to buy the one s with game pass and just save for when the pro versions come out.

Thanks for the vid. Though I have no plans to go 4k, I got the Series X. I haven't had an Xbox since the OG, so it's nice to catch up. I can play some of my old games, and many 360 I missed. I was okay to spend the extra amount given the optical drive, extra space and increased performance.

I was gonna get series x but low on money so I got the series s, and wow it holds up beautiful!! It looks next gen either way!

I think in terms of "taking games with you on holidays" Switch is completely unbeatable

Well now that you can play Xbox games via phone and tablets that doesn’t hold true anymore. There are more options now. I have a switch but being able to play real games on my phone is awesome! You can hook an Xbox up via Bluetooth too

Along buying only digital games, having a 1gbps internet connection and also getting a PS5 DE, the Xbox Series S through All Access with 2 years of Game Pass made perfect sense for me. I could not be happier with how it runs. Don't know what they do to the games, but that 1080p on my 4K display is very clean.

Pretty surprising given your external SSD testing that you didn't mention that all the back-compat and even Series S Ori can be run on your existing external USB drives, and that load times with SSD USB are pretty much the same as internally installed.

Thanks for all your info I’m finding it very useful, but I have a question which I can’t find the answer to yet anywhere on the internet. I am running a 1080p 144hz gaming monitor with Series S, and registering (via game plus on the monitor ) a FPS rate on most games at 120. Is this a true reading? Also if I upgrade to a 1440p 144hz monitor will the frame rate suffer. Is the series s capable of re-routing processing power where needed? Are most games on the series s gonna look and feel better on 1080p at a higher FPS? Or will a 1440p 144hz keep that high rate and look even better? I’m worried if I upgrade the monitor I will lose that all important FPS ... thanks for your time , I would really appreciate your thoughts on this.

The 120fps are just a label in your monitor for the majority of time. You will need a tool that reads at real time or from a capture the frame rate and the frame time, something useless if you want only to play. The best is just watching the technical analysis from here (Digital Foundry) or from NX Gamer for example to figure out whats going on. Once there you will see that in the launched games the Series S fights for reaching 60 fps at a sub-1080p, reaching the 720p, if not capped to 30fps. The cuestion is: the more resolution, the less frame rate; the more pixel coun in the monitor and less pixel count in the game, the more blurry and undetailed the picture is. The Series S is not a 1440p console and not will be, not at 60 fps for demanding games. Is just marketing. Like "the most powerful console ever" for the Series X, because is now "the most powerful Xbox ever" for Microsoft, they changed their slogan; and because it not overpass the PS5 like everybody said. Stay with your monitor and enjoy it.

Quickresume is crazy good! I've literally already changed my gaming habits. Can't go back. Switching between Starwars and Halo 5 right now and these games loads up in seconds. So when it works, it's awesome! It's so nice to just pop out whenever for some youtube or Netflix and then just continue gaming again. I'm stuck infront of the tv. 😁

I don't really see this as a problem. Most of the multiplatform games will be "identical" with small differences. The only true difference we will see will be in sony exclusives. So PS5 is a must and XSX is later buy in case MS will start bringing some big guns.... IF that ever happens
