    Is not about having money, is about filling a $70 billion dollar hole that no studio besides Bethesda, Activision and a few others can.

    How do you think they got so rich? It sure wasn’t by giving a damn about their employees. Phil Spencer, in that clip, was actively gaslighting fans, claiming he wants to, “foster creativity,” by, “allowing,” studios to make games of a type they don’t usually make. Half of the team that made Redfall, including all of its founders, had already left the company by the time that game was published. Those brave enough to speak out about why they left all said it was because they were being, “forced,” to make a live service game, which they had no experience making. Then Spencer flipped and said it would be a single player narrative, when they were already near completion, forcing them to rework the entire project, with the results we all saw. They had pleaded with Spencer not to force them out of their lane in the first place, into a type of game they didn’t like or believe in ethically, let alone artistically. But their pleas fell on deaf ears, until the Microsoft higher ups changed their minds, when it was already too late. They pleaded even louder with Spencer for more time, but again, deaf ears. He KNEW the game wasn’t ready, yet he outright lied in his softball Q&A sessions, saying he was getting great feedback from all the testers. He had simply calculated that the game would flop but, by releasing it in an incomplete state, he could still watch the calendar for when those quarterly payouts to the shareholders were due and guarantee their payoffs. And how could he guarantee them? Glad you asked. By knowing that he could still make savings at the other end, by firing staff. As long as the shareholders (who don’t play video games or know anything about them) get their money come pay day, everything is fine. And the investors probably don’t even know about these disasters in the community. All they know is that the first day they don’t get their LEGALLY ENFORCEABLE promised payouts, they will move on into another industry and gut that. Which is why, to the public, Spencer says the direct opposite of the truth and gaslights us players about what the studios actually wanted. Most of these people are bound by NDA’s, so the fact that we hear anything contradicting him, or even just challenging his basic assumptions, at all is as a result of brave individuals taking big risks.

    You guys need to learn how money works. Microsoft's valuation has nothing to do with revenue and profit. MS had 227B in revenue last year and a profit of 101B. The Xbox division can't spend 10's of billions to acquire studios and operate in the red. Whoever came up with gamepass royally fucked up because now they have to make cuts to cover those acquisitions.

    What we're seeing has always been the the goal to some extent, probably wouldve been worse if people didnt give some pushback sometimes, but the pushback is always only temporary, and these big companies will find sneakier ways to fuck us (the consumer) over, and them (the developers) all to max out profit projections to please their real customers (the share holders, invested paries like tencent, and other corporate suits) with little actual effort on their end. sucking any creativity out of creating games too, since the only time they truly succeed is if they follow the trends of making the consumers trickle money out for each game past buying the product while hoping we're too dumb to notice. Being a trend, a pattern that has to be learned, its only a matter of time before one of these big publishers start using AI to generate games as well. as has happened already in other professions where creatives are being kicked out. ...Yeah, so it kinda fuckn sucks

And, sadly; I feel it will be a very, very long time before the revival of gaming actually comes a pass, as these big studio conglomerates continue trying to dig deeper into their customers' pockets. All i see is epically failing releases..... Since anything worth playing is going to just be endless cash grabs, as they are so out of touch with their customers that they don't even know what makes a good game anymore. When everything can stream it turns out that the killer app for your “games console” is actually…ummmm…the games.

And the fact that publishers will milk every cent they humanly can out of games is insane. Gearbox acquired the Risk of Rain franchise and one of the first things they did was start making a mobile gacha game with it. It just seems like such a bad idea to work with publishers.

  • @frylad

    @frylad

    It used to be that publishers help with Marketing and Distribution of games, which was really important pre-youtube becoming mainstream and when physical copies of games were the main wah they were purchased. After KZread and other video sharing sites became popular it became a lot easier to generate excitement for a game as long as it looked good by sending out review copies to popular creators. Once physical media started rapidly being replaced by digital downloads it massively reduced the upfront cost needed to actually sell the game, and with the rising popularity of Steam it became extremely easy to self-publish. The only reason I can think of to want a publisher in the current environment is if they act as an investor to allow you to hire more staff. There's almost no reason to have one for marketing or distribution anymore but because of how long they were necessary most of the popular IP's are already owned by a studio or publisher.

    That’s one thing I do not like about modern gaming. Everything is either online, god forbid you are visually impaired and you can’t just look at the button map to see what to do so you click each button to see what each does😂. Then there’s the whole thing about looking around to see what is where and all that. I’ve had so many people just be assholes because they could and most were adults! And then I have had kids you could tell or under the age of 12 or so be so kind when I tell them I’m vision impaired, and currently just trying to figure things out. It’s actually really sad that children are more mature about it than adults. The kids just think it’s cool that someone with limited vision likes to game. I have several disabilities that make me kind of isolated. And gaming is one of the few things that allows me to interact with people on a daily basis. As someone with disabilities, you were sort of skirted around by society because they don’t understand it, put on the pedestal because you can do things that they can do and they are shocked, or treated like a child which is really annoying. 😂 so it’s nice to just chill and have fun with other people I used to love playing, even one player games, especially because it was a small win. Every time I was able to do something that a fully sided person could do in gaming. Daily tasks are easy.😂 the one thing I really do love is the attention, Microsoft has paid to those of us with disability, understanding it might be our only form of socialization because society exists.

I can currently play every Xbox game I’ve ever owned from Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One on my Series X just by popping in the disc and I don’t need to subscribe to an additional service. The industry is far from collapsing, it's restructuring, in a very bad way. The video game industry at this point, is literally too big to fail, the video game industry brings in more money annually than the movie and music industry combined. The problem is, the games that are bringing in those huge profits are the few unicorn games like WoW, Minecraft, War Thunder, CS, LoL, and so on, games that have successfully become live service games, and every company is chasing a piece of that pie. I say this as someone who works in the industry.

    Except SEGA was strictly a games company, and when they lost power in the games industry as fast as it did, they lost it all and have been trying to claw their way back to major relevancy since 1999 when they had to dip out of home console sales. In fact Sega would not exist today if not for their merger with SAMMY co., a gambling arcade machine manufacture. which is why today Sega is actually known as SEGA/SAMMY. Microsoft (and Xbox by extension) are literally to big to fail, and in the event that Xbox does fail, Microsoft can and will go on like nothing happened. Same with Sony.

    @@xstonedsoberx There's a big difference between acquiring independent studios and buying ENTIRE holding companies. Sony's acquisitions are nowhere near the same level as Microsoft's. @@xstonedsoberxSony acquired small STUDIOS, yes... Often building them up to be much bigger and better than they were, some VR studios have been closed recently but nothing has ever been as drastic as Xbox buying entire publishers up and shutting down studios as a result, gamepass being the main consolidation problem in gaming. Both Sony and Microsoft are arseholes, corporations built on self preservation at any cost - however, one is moving very very differently to the other. Microsoft in general are an extremely dangerous company when it comes to monopolizing and consolidation, they've been doing it far longer than Xbox has existed and only now are they implementing that strategy into Xbox for the reasons Muta explained - Xbox is now a noticable division in Microsoft's armoury. Sonys biggest purchase is 1/25th the size of Xbox's biggest purchase. The difference is astronomical.

    So, this sucks, BUT, its a studio closure, is it possible MS is consolidating studios, and moving IPs and the devs to their other studios? Closing an office, and reducing the administrative burden would save a ton of money on the MS Games books. I have no idea, just a thought. Checking out linked-in on the top talent at these studios would probably be a good indicator if they were laid-off or just shuffled to another office, if so, they are all under the same MS Games umbrella, so its really more like re-organizing a department within a company. Also for your main question in the description, game development is quite difficult, it needs the perfect storm of talent and management, and any weaknesses really come through, and with the sheer size of these teams you have to consider the management overheard, when you need managers to mange managers things get shitty fast.. I really think this is why most small teams make more interesting games, where large teams pump out pretty games with already established formula and audience.
