La Harpe Reine: Concertos for Harp at the Court of Marie-Antoinette
Xavier de Maistre, Les Arts Florissants & William Christie
The Triumph of the Harp!
When the young Archduchess of Austria, Marie-Antointette, arrived at the French court in 1770, amongst her luggage was a harp. Contrary to the instrument’s heralded decline, the harp was about to enjoy an unprecedented popularity and to inspire a rich and prolific repertoire, quite distinct from the concertos being composed for the keyboard. Xavier de Maistre and Les Arts Florissants are offering to take us on a voyage of discovery through this magnificent corpus, brought to life using instruments of the period in a program that is as accomplished as it is captivating, placing other names, other masterpieces in the limelight alongside the likes of Haydn (“La Reine” Symphony) and Gluck!
Xavier de Maistre appears courtesy of Sony Classical.

But what do you learn playing music fomr 1775 on a harp from 1810? You may as well play them on kazoo.

Playing music from the past is bad suddenly? That is how music is made you take from the past and make anew.

@@johnnotrealname8168 Then why do it on period instruments if you don't bother to use instruments from the period the music came from? They are passing it of as a period performance but the harp is of a type that didn't exist when the music was written.

@@Parkerharps9966 Who gives a @#$&? Except you obviously. They are inspired by that period and playing the harp. That is enough.

@@johnnotrealname8168 well, actually, yes I do care... as someone who understands how a 1770's harp was different to an 1800 harp, and how that affects/effects harp writing and playing, I see this as a wasted chance to hear it as the composer intended because the harp they used doesn't sound the same, and the player's technique isn't right for the period of music. .. and you know what? this is a public comment space.... and I am allowed to express an opinion just as you are.... I have, you have.... th difference is I dn't feel the need to be rude, or personally insulting.

@@Parkerharps9966 It is a public platform so I can comment likewise. What happened to your spelling towards the end? He is doing it whatever @#$&ing way he wants and he can as it is his album. It not being exactly period is not a concern.
