    This is great, I love the uber high end builds for over landers but this is even better because you you did it yourself. I've just lost my Dad and inherited his old X5 and I would love to turn it into something like this, thanks for putting this content out there.

    Great vid guys, I also own an X5, as I'm in the UK it's a 3.0 diesel turbo, sport, auoto tiptronic, it's a beast of a car that I'm looking to convert similar to yours, thanks for the ideas and inspiration, I'll be following the rest of your trip and me and my other half will hopefully doing the NC 500 round Scotland later this year too.

    Nicely done. I have the exact same year, model, and color and have been camping out of it in the Sierras lately.. Couldn't be happier! I'd highly recommend you get both front door windows tinted down to nearly the same % as the rest, and using a sun shade for your windshield when you sleep. It's embarrassingly easy to forget that people can look right into the car with BMW factory tints, esp if you're watching a movie or have those fancy xmas lights on at night. Safe travels!

    In our state (Washington), we were told we couldn't go any darker on our front windows. But yes, we would love a bit more privacy. We do have a front window shade so that helps a bit.

    Great stuff i like the mods and easygoing commentary. I think the x5i s a great platform and I appreciate any free thinkers who will run something other than a Toyota or jeep. My rig is an 01 ml320 and will go anywhere I point it. I think you both would like the Baja xl rally I just did it and had a blast. Next one is 2025 with a reunion run to loreto next year Feb March time frame.

    For solo sleeping and exploring or expeditions, there is no need to build a bed at all. Simply place a good self-inflating mat (I use a Kampa 10mm Wide Boy) in the back. This provides masses of extra space in the X5 for storage of extra 🏕️ camping gear, fishing gear, camera equipment, water, food etc., but it also has the advantage of far more headroom space above the bed. It also allows you to quickly roll up the bed when not in use. My X5 already has tinted windows (most have). I add a few Car Shades to the rear door windows (made to fit the X5 by a UK company) to be left open for sleeping, yet still provide fresh air and stop mosquitos and bugs flying in at night.

  • @X5Overland

    @X5Overland

    3 жыл бұрын

    For us, a sleeping platform was a must. We have tried everything to make the back of the X5 comfortable for extended stays and nothing beats a full size bed lol. We still have plenty of space for our camping gear and whatnot under the platform and in our 2 roof top boxes. Of course a sleeping platform isn't at all necessary, but for us it was a worthy endeavor =)

  • @Globetrotter-1

    @Globetrotter-1

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@X5Overland Yes I think that being solo provides far more room and easier to make the X5 comfortable without building cupboards and double bed etc. As a couple you have other priorities of course and I understand that. As long as you're comfortable and enjoy the journey and exploration, that's all that matters. 🙂

    how do you like the Ceika coilovers? According to their website, you can get them custom made with a lift rather than going with the FMU lift kit? I am looking at replacing shocks and coilovers anyways and figured it would be great to go that route rather than doing separate lift kit and shocks.

  • @X5Overland

    @X5Overland

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, their website is a bit misleading. They can only do stock ride height for the X5 so the lift kit would still be needed. I did however find a few lift kits on ebay that are similar but substantially cheaper. I like the Ceika components so far and the ride quality is much improved. The springs are a bit stiffer as well which helped us with our expedition weight.

    Not trying to be rude but you need to tow a 2nd X5 to have all the parts to fix it. Respectfully you chose the good motor; the 3.0. The 4.4, 4.6 and 4.8 are junk. But your rear bags can go out, T case are known for exploding. Transmission as well. The cooling system on the 3.0 is all plastic and prone to failure. Suggest upgrading it I mean to be quite frankly y’all chose the wrong exploring vehicle. It can be but boy I hope y’all have deep pockets considering it’s carrying all that extra weight and you have the smaller power plant. All that is doing is straining that thing, full time all wheel drive and premium fuel ONLY so you are so limited to where you can travel before you have ping and knocking occur cause you’ll either be stranded or forced to use 87. HOPING you don’t currently run 87 in it. Sure octane booster but seriously y’all must have a lot of money to go out and travel in a E53 X5. Let alone with 225K. Before anyone says any stories about this and that, if it was a diesel. It would have lot more strength and get over 17 MPG (with his lift and tire set up plus weight) Yeah. Not a very bright idea!

    You are correct on a lot of points! But we choose not to limit ourselves when it comes to adventure. We started with using what we had and worked our way up from there =). I love that our X5 is unique and I love the challenge of working on it (just not in the middle of nowhere haha). We upgraded all suspension components and went with Ceika rally coilovers all around to avoid any issues with components that werent designed for the stress. We considered a diesel but we have been getting around just fine (so far) But when she blows up, we'll consider it a little harder lol. Currently the X5 weighs a tad more than it did from the factory and we have considerably more wind resistance lol. As far as fuel goes, i hate that it runs premium. Its about $80 to fill from empty. We haven't ran into a situation where a gas station didn't have premium but we do carry octane booster as a backup. Thank you so much for your very well thought out comment! Its refreshing to get others perspective on the X5

    Sorry but this is a terrible choice for an overlander. There are so many better and cheaper options in the long run given the amount of repairs and maintenance

    I partially agree lol. It can be a bit pricey to repair but not MUCH more than a regular repair on any other vehicle. I do most of the repairs myself which saves a lot of money too. Money aside, it has been a very capable vehicle on and off road! =) It might break a little more often than some other vehicles haha, but thats the price you pay to be unique. Plus it looks pretty =P Thanks for your comment, no offense taken

    I disagree mate, I've had three Land Rovers that have cost more to run and repair than my X5, Toyotas might not go wrong very often but when they do you need to remortgage your house and ransom you children to pay to fix them, mine has only developed one problem in 5 years, they're a brilliant car, all you need to do to get going is put some decent tyres on them and you're off, obviously they'll never compete with a bespoke off-roader with high and low range but for moderate conditions they offer a lot of comfort, fuel economy, style and fun.
