been an X fan since the first one, but X3 was the first one i spent insane amounts of time playing. X4 is getting there and i have no doubt I'll end up spending the same kind of time playing it. I wouldn't actually try to compare to Elite: Dangerous or NMS because i don't see it as the same kind of game. It's an empire building game that allows you to do it from the standpoint of a person actually existing in the universe rather than playing like a god game. imagine Galactic Civilizations, Space Empire, or Stellaris, but you play as a person living in the game universe. That's the X4 game experience. The learning curve is the number one reason why the series has never gotten to insane levels of popularity. there is no way around it though, not without sacrificing what makes the game great. It is a silly deep and complex game when you first start, and can cause incredible frustration. surviving that learning curve and frustration is the only way to get into the game i'm afraid. it's a requirement, a right of passage. If you want to experience THE best space empire building game, you have to survive the learning curve.

I bought X4 two weeks ago, spent about an hour running around the place you start trying to find "the docking bay" , which wasn't labelled "the docking bay" after doing a few of the tutorials I took a break and reinstalled X3AP again, a game I had spent many hours on thinking actually that was more enjoyable than what I had found in X4 so far... only to see that X3 Farnhams Legacy not only exsisted but had already been released for a year and was free. I've been playing Farnhams Legacy instead of X4, it's such an improvement even on AP and honestly gives me everything I wanted in terms of improvement over X3AP.

Docking tutorial is literally the first tutorial and simplest thing to do in game. How did you manage to not figure it out yet thinking X3 is more enjoyable?! (X3 is undeniably great game, but it is much more complicated than X4)

@@Nyxson Seriously? I found it the other way around, I could pretty much do anything in X3 by just clicking on the screen everything feels very streamlined to me compared to X4 for example having to constantly bring up a menu to do things with my ship bugged me, not having the changes in lore explained to me since X3 mean't I was looking for the SETA button and trying to figure out if the gates were back or not. X4 actually looked worse for me than Albion Prelude in terms of ship graphics. It's most likely as you say though a simpler game, I have been playing the X series since Reunion first came out and broke my teeth on that clunky mess of a game, after playing Reunion X3TC and AP don't seem complicated at all. It's most likely the fact i'm unfamiliar with the new way of doing things that turns me off.

Shift+D is docking permission and the station will automatically light the path to you. Anyway, just give it a chance, I understand that you are familiar and comfortable with X3 mechanics, but give it just a little more time and you will understand how much easier and more intuitive X4 is (especially with fleet control)

Totally LOVED X3 Reunion! I remember some good ole days leaving this game running in accelerated time mode, while I went off to work. Then eagerly looking forward to see how much money I made or, how many traders I had lost! Then building up space stations, and working out the best trading routes between them. Or running around in a fleet of powerful ships, hunting down bad guys... Finally culminating in a MASSIVE showdown with the Xenon in their space! Yeah... I looked, I came and I conquered! Even though I lost most of my fleet! Good Times! Then bought Terran Conflict but for some reason, I really didn't get into it! Was tempted to try again but maybe it's best just to jump into this! I will forever love Elite Dangerous, but compared to the X games, it is a massive time sink! Sure, mastering the X games does take time, at first, but once you start to automate your empire to the point that it simply runs itself, this game becomes instantly rewarding! Because you can just leave it to evolve, while you get on with Real Life 😁

I think the only thing I'd miss if I switched from Elite is the native VR support. Nothing quite compares to piloting your ship from a VR cockpit.

  • @martinchan71
    @martinchan712 жыл бұрын

Firstly, you need to fly your ship. Tutorial is absolutely must. Because without upgrade, you have to land the ship at the station yourself and that is difficult as hell when you first start. Then learn how to make money by watching KZread videos. But on top of that, you need to know the interface of the game well. It is overwhelmingly much details on screen. Trading, mining, job randomly appears at any station. But the problem is, you also need to know how to look for these jobs as well. Once you know the basics, explore and build your fleet and play the main story to get your own station.

This game turns your computer into a galaxy simulator. The learning curve is steep, but it's really amazing once you start making progress. This is a fully 3D rendered galaxy with thousands of ships and space stations, simulated economy and wars. It is overwhelming at first, but exciting once you start to understand the depth of the simulation and how many different ways you can play. In this game, you can be Han Solo, smuggler, Luke Skywalker, X-wing pilot, or even Darth Vader, with your own death star and fleet of Star Destroyers, or run your own Trade Federation. If you're looking for a story, the only one you'll find here is the one you make yourself.

Great review. One thing that you didn't mention, and what sets X apart from every other space game (and games generally I'd say), is that the galaxy is alive. All the NPC ships etc move in real time, whether you are there or not. The supply/demand economy, as well as everything else you can do in the game rely on this. All the NPCs go about their daily lives. It's a superb game. I bought X: Beyond the Frontier when it was released, and I've bought every iteration since. Even Rebirth, though that's the one I wish I hadn't. The original X was released 22 years ago, and even now I still feel I'm only barely scratching the surface. But it's such a nice itch to scratch.

I play the X-series since X2 (released in 2004) and played every title since then. I simply love this franchise and the freedom in this sandbox. It’s actually a must have for everyone that likes space games. You don’t have to build stations if you don’t want to an go on boarding operations and pirating instead. But if you like you can build self supplying production facilities, establish a own shipyard, Outfit the ships to your liking and then start a huge war against other factions. Everything directly influences the economy and it’s possible to dry out the enemy to a point where they can’t build news ships. Once you deleted the enemy from a sector you can claim it and set your own rules and orders :) it’s really a very deep game :)

Hey, nice review! I want to add a few more points to the pros and cons list, points that I hear regularly from people who played the game and myself: Pros: -An insanely detailed economy. As you've described, miners gather resources that they later sell to stations and a supply/demand chain is born. But that's not all. The end products of the economy pyramid are ships and station. The economy is entirely war driven, meaning that if a faction runs out of resources, they are pretty much good as dead unless one of their allied factions manage to help them. But that's on the grand scale. On a local scale for a new player, such thing can happen that he orders the ship only to find out that the space station doesn't seem to have the sufficient high-tech wares to complete his ordered ship. -Campaigns and diplomacy. The game is not a standard 4X game with dynamic diplomacy, however that's not necessarily a bad thing. The player can influence factions by the end of each campaigns, thus he can turn individual factions against each other and if the players thinks ahead, he can profit from these actions. For instance, in my last playthrough I turned the Argon Federation against their Terran brothers. What happened was that the Terrans cleared out the Argon capital sector. Knowing that this was likely to happen, I rushed there as a false messiah and quickly erected a shipyard complex in that sector. I'm now insanely rich since I provide the majority of the spacecrafts for the Argon Federation while also being friendly to the Terrans with a few of my stations scattered through Terran space. -Labor of love product. X4, much like any other X game so far began its career in a really rough state. It took Egosoft years to fix it to this level, and not only fix the bugs, but give us really cool new features for free, such as wreck salvaging. And I have to say, Egosoft could have decided that they sell you these fancy new features via a DLC. But no, they simply give you the features for free, while baking new campaigns, new factions, new ships and stations, and map expansions into the DLCs. Cons: -No multiplayer. Simple as that. Many people wish they could show off their spacecrafts to their friends, or do missions in coop but shamely this won't be possible. There's an attempt for a sort-of multiplayer setting in X4 called Ventures, but it's disabled for the foreseeable future and we're not sure what that might hold. -No VR support. Egosoft isn't very keen on doing a VR option or VR version of the game since XRebirth VR. Not sure if this would change in the future. But again, on the bright-side, headtracker hardware with HOTAS systems work pretty well. -No 4X. Although the player can utilize the 4X points, the NPC factions do not. The game is kept in a balanced state that won't flip further after a certain point. So a NPC single faction taking over the entire galaxy just cannot happen in vanilla means. -All-over-the-place UI. Although the UI could be a lot worse, I guess we have to agree that it feels somewhat dated. I honestly feel like navigating through a Windows environment when I play the game. It's especially apparent when you have to expand submenus, or when you right click on ships, as if they were files on the desktop. -AI. The biggest and still on-going issue with the game is that ship AI not being very responsive. Fleet management can be a real mess if you don't look for clues when the AI is about to give up on you and do something stupid, like wander off to the distance, or just simply not follow orders correctly. Ships also fail to fly in a tight formation when in a group and sometimes defenders or a ship arrive too late to the target simply because they don't seem to recognize the location of the target has updated. This can make the game really frustrating and many end-game players give up at this point. But there is hope. These particular AI bugs are said to be really hard to corner, but the dev team is always on alert for these mishaps the AI may produce and look for a workaround.

I put only a hundred hour into it when released, but I had 600-700 in X3 back in the day. Also have a few hundred in ED as well. And I really like the combat in ED (combat in X3 basically sucks), but besides that, under the shiny graphics it feels empty and artificial. Nothing is persistent, as soon as I jump, I jump into a different instance. As I start mining, computer generated pirates appear from the blue sky. I never felt that I had any minuscule effect of the world on ED. But in X4 when I built my small station, it was not a large megafactory, just a small, decent enterprise, I just stood in the dock in awe an watching how my freighters are coming and going, how they are requesting dock permissions and docking, loading or unloading and going their way. Everything was alive, either with or without me, things just worked and happened. I never felt so immersed in a space game until then. Just forget about the story, X games were never so good at those, but if you like sandboxes, seeing a living, breathing, persistent universe, just give it a go.

As far a learning the game because it's so complex, best way is to go through the tutorials and then start playing. You will have questions how to do something, look it up and after some time you will become acclimated to the game. I've played all of them except for Albian whatever, Rebirth and X4, and each time I feel like I have to learn anew, but after a while of playing you become use to things that you won't think about it, you'll just be immersed in that game world being a pirate or a trader or whatever floats your spaceship.

Hey ho great review - totally agree I´m hooked since x2 where we - the terrans enter - story wise - x3 was such a disapointment but now... heck, amazing - as many already said, it will own you as soon you get it! I am freaking galactic empire myself - create your own fraction. its just mind blowing what i wanna add it even has a great mods - so if all the vanilla isn´t enough / some of rebalancing - its all there - this game is with me for over a decade! nothing like it nowhere - and as a fellow german im quite proud for this super nerdy sandbox at its best :) peace also if you love tables and just data data data - you´ll enjoy it!

I expect that the fact it's single player with no real multi-player is a bigger issue than the look of the game for many people, so I'm surprised you hit the graphics so hard, but skipped on that point. The graphics are fine, not the best possible but still looks really good most of the time. I like to play this game not as an empire but as a company, yes, a company that provides mining services, trade, manufacture and distribution of products, and that also earns money from war, yes, I have huge fleets and I use to benefit (or harm) governments, the economy, my pocket kkkkk. My company name is Cerberus (and yes the name came from Mass Effect kkkkk..) and it serves humanity above all else (most of the time kkkkk..). I'll say, X4 is a good improvement when it comes to empire building from X3. I played Albion Prelude for long enough to say, no, I'm not one of those dumb dumbs who hail X3 as the holy grail, it has problems. X3's biggest issue is that the UI is awful. Going through 4 or more different menus just to give a single unit complex orders, telling a certain type of ship in the sector to follow those same orders in the same process, having mass orders handed out because you have to micromanage every ship to ensure they're doing what you want them to. And you couldn't pause at all while doing this, meaning wasting precious seconds to a swarm of Xenon. X4 does away with massive windows of orders and has more or less the same, while spending less time sitting on a map display. And no, the special orders you could give did not entirely disappear or get dumbed down, more like a lot of the more redundant things got tossed out. Also, you don't need to blow through the bank buying a bunch of ship software just so dingas knows how to be a sector trader. Honestly, buying the software at all seemed really dumb, and hammered how for some reason, all of your ships were literally AI controlled, with no pilot actually in the ship. I thought the Xenon were the bots? Some things got a bit safety padded for newbies, like X4 being VERY forgiving in some aspects, like collision. Flying full speed in travel mode into something causes you to awkwardly bounce, when just rubbing up against the nose of a cruiser caused you to self destruct the second you made contact. Stations are also more condensed, but let us be honest, the station hubs in X3 basically did the same god damn thing.

Same, X3 Reunion was the first X game I played and immediately fell in love with it. Just the overall look and the set music you got when going into different sectors is what got me hooked, then I actually started getting into it. Though like I said in my own video X4 doesn't really capture that same feeling, the sense of grandeur you felt when going into a sector for the first time isn't really there anymore, there's no real sense of distinction or individuality with the sectors in X4 as there was in X3. Hopefully X5 will bring this back. X Rebirth was also a solid miss for me. Something also worth a mention is the insane modding community the X series has, has everything for full Starwars, to StarTrek and BSG overhauls (not sure if X4 has BSG yet?). I agree with all your points though, X4 definitely isn't for everyone but it isn't as difficult as it looks to get into. It just looks daunting because of it's scope. Graphically, perhaps the game could do with an HD texture pack? But like you said, it's by no means bad. Nicely done.

nice description, although I personally never noticed the graphics the way you describe it. But okay, I'm dealing with the X series since the first game of it (called "X beyond the frontier") and I played thousands of hours in them. So I am 100percent biased. From my point of view worth to add to your overview: X is still strict single player - even the first attempts of establishing collaboration with other players are currently deactivated. And the NPCs are really limited in their behavior - they are obviously there to do a job, they don't have a simulated life or even give this impression. You are really unique in your X universe - because you are alone. Really alone. Yes, fractions have a simulated behavior, but that's completely decoupled from the NPCs. What I want to say: as you mentioned, X4 is not for everyone. But I think the main reason for that is less the complexity (which is indeed really high). It's more that only a certain percentage of people will still accept the described approach of simulation in 2022, and will love the resulting challenges and opportunities. Many people might either expect sort of mmorpg setup, or a way more impactful simulation of the population behavior.

I feel E:D and SC have the best experiences currently for that style of gameplay (I know SC is still alpha, but I still think it's fair to compare with that in mind) Thing is, E:D is great but I'm simply burnt out having played so much of it and as much as I adore SC, I need to take breaks from the buggines occasionally lol. I do really enjoy mining/trading my way up to a large goal and the X series seems like it accommodates that playstyle and takes it even further with the fleet and station side of things. Have to say that aspect sounds incredible and not something E:D or SC are really going for. Look forward to giving it a go!

Wow. Been looking for a game like this. Got caught in the sunk cost fallacy with elite porting my old xbox commander recently for my new gaming laptop. Really pretty, great mechanics and all and the addtion of space legs is bare bones but fun. But as fan of elite from it's first day on xbox all the stuff you mentioned in this review is all the stuff I keep wishing for down the road but have come to realise probably won't be. As an alt game to invest time in this is definetely a contender. I tried Eve several times over the years, but as a someone with limited time for gaming I'll always be behind the curve for that one, so no empire/coorporation building there (got a full time job, don't need another on top of that). I don't have time for building relationships with other players as an esssential mechanic, so a game that's like elite but structured for you to build up your empire is definetely a good selling point. Almost fell into Star citizen, but fell back on that when I saw I only had one system to explore. While the game mechanics might have depth compared to Elite there's something about the realism as art and the pioneering spirit in Elite that keeps me coming back. This looks and sounds (by your review) like a good middle ground between Elite and SC. will definetely be looing at some gameplay videos now. Thanks again for the review, it definetely put this on my shopping list.

Good video. Thank you for helping me decide to buy this. It's on sale over at Steam and I am going against some of your advice and buying the whole bundle at once. I'll just jump in headfirst, lol. Cheers!

X:BTF was the first one for me.. it was also at time when no internet was available.. took months to get the grasp of it.. and even back then game was complex and complicated. But it was also missing some primitve functions like the map of the sectors/universe.. Literally had to draw my own universe map as i explored on A1 sized paper.. Next when storyline asked to go to specific sector.. there was no gps/waypoints in-game on where to go.. sector name is all you got :D.. Thus literally had to do some manual pathfinding on my beforementioned handdrawned A1 universe map. After such initial experiences.. all later X games feel like easymode sometimes. But overall the complexity just increased since then :) And one cant ignore the the quality of life improvements that came since then - especially now on X4 where the map alone can serve you as all-in-one interface for all the endgame stuff. One might even end up playing most of the end-game in that map x] - i been there :D

Its like a private server eve online minus the "hire npc" part. In eve, you hire players to do things for you.

Characters walking around was not a thing in the X-series until like the last two games. You could get out in your space suit since the first game I believe, there was no walking around stations or on planets till like Rebirth and this game.
