X2000 Tilt Train Promo

This video clip is a copy of the "Promotion video" for the X2000 Tilt train that was brought over from Sweden in 1995 by the New South Wales Railways , This train was hauled by their XPT Power cars ( XP 2000 & XP 2019 ) during it's stay in Australia , This video forms "pt 1" of 4 parts to this collection of videos on the Tilt Train in Australia , part 2 is up soon with part 3 to follow after that & part 4 due as soon as I can.
Just a note on this video - You Tube has told me that this video contains "copyrighted music" which WAS ALREADY THERE on the original VHS tape that this comes from , so , do expect to see an advert with this video ; sorry. :-(
Part 2 is • X2000 Tilt Train at Go... if you wish to see it.

My mother worked on the X2000 when it was based at the XPT depot. She was handpicked. She still has a medal & mugs to commemorate her time working on it. Even when I went on board it was miles ahead of the XPT but there were problems. In Europe & Scandinavia platforms are straight whereas here they are curved at most points. Also the X2000 was wide which meant several platforms had to be shaved to fit it. This is why some station platforms have wider gaps than normal which you can see today. The Swedish engineers couldn't grasp the curves of the rail lines & could not go around them at high speed. Plus the rail sleepers were wood so it would take years to replace them all.

Hi "Risky" , Thanks for your comment & I bet that you Mum would've been a very lucky lady to have such an opportunity like that , I knew someone who worked in the XPT service Centre & he let us know about it so my Mum & Dad got some tickets for us all & we went for a ride to Canberra on it & we came back on an Explorer set which you'll get to see in my 4 part series on the Tilt Train.

There is a large bar low down on the side of the cars which tilts the car body. I was told that it wasn't realised just how wide the cars really were until they were landed. Consequently there was a a flurry of activity to trim the coping on quite a few platforms before the train could go into regular service between Sydney and Canberra. I was actively involved in that work, (with some good overtime!). I was introduced to Kim Finnimore, the CountryLink General Mngr, who was gracious in his thanks for our efforts (got the hat and the mug!). The trial confirmed what had been calculated, that NSW tracks are too curvy (at least in the bits where most people live) to get the best out of a tilt body train. The video commentary mentions that the X2000 could romp through curves 15% faster than a conventional train. 15% faster than an XPT through the curves was not a sufficient advance to justify the expense. Most of the time gains made in the Canberra running were realised by manning the normally unattended stations between Goulburn and Queanbeyan to save the train having to stop and have the train crew change the safe working token (the 'staff') themselves. The cars were nice to ride in with a pleasant ambience. I've still got a Tilt Train speed board; just like an XPT board but on a slant..

That's mostly because of the infrastructure on the line itself not able to support higher speed on a regular basis, meaning it's not allowed to run faster. At least not faster on the regular lines. On a modern High speed line it could surely get up to the 270km/h

Hi Anthony - just 2 words - Government Promises , They always promise us something & not deliver it after being elected , another thing that was required for it to run in Oz was that our track conditions need to be upgraded in order for it to be a success as the platforms all needed to be modified so that it could take on a curved platforms in N.S.W. as they were made for the steam era in their day.

Hey John , I know that it's your thoughts , but , when you look closely at the 3 intermediate cars "they're from Sweden" & only the 2 modified XPT power cars were used as the Swedish power car wasn't brought over with the other 3 cars as it uses a different power supply voltage to what is used here in Oz & these were as close to being "stylish" as the railways had at the time ; I know that you might not find it "acceptable" but at least they tried to impress the public.
