I first went down this road in 1968 when my mom was driving us 3 kids from Minneapolis to Seattle and this route was recommended by someone. The whole story of that evening and night is one thing I will never forget, the highpoint seeing the medicine wheel sign and making visiting it my first "bucket list" item. I made it in '94.

Thanks for getting my pickup in at 14 :19 . As a subscriber had a hunch it was you when you were filming.

Really great filming! The Bighorns are the best kept secret in all of WY. My Mom was born in Basin, WY. My father was born in Greybull, WY, I was born in Cheyenne, WY. Tough county, especially in winter.

I'm from the Big Horn Basin too....Yep winter time in Good ol Wyoming...lol... We actually just had snow on labor day and 32°☃️

This area is one of three places they tried to establish a trail to the Virginia City gold mines in southwest Montana. It would later become the Bozeman trail.

If you see "Snow Fences", you know the wind blows there!! HaHaHa

My dad built Dayton Cane back in late 40's. Fallen City is my favorite pull off area. That bald area below the road was from all the blasting they did.

The better view is from the launch point at sand turn. They just replaced a bunch of that handrail on Monday 8-17-20, because a truck needed to stop and used the rail to slow himself down. That is where they launch hang gliders. There is a video of launches on youtube. That last pull out is where you can overlook fallen city. The rock on your right when it comes to a point at the top of the hill is Steamboat rock. That is the formation on the right when your at the last pullout with the placards about aspen.

Russ it really is great that you film all this. The wife and I are coming this way next month we are heading to Yellowstone and Jackson your filming in South Dakota has already allowed us to decide where to explore and where to just drive though. Thanks and keep up the great work

Thank you for the ride. I grow up in Wyoming but never made it to the Big Horns, so it was interesting getting to see them. I went to Fremont county youth camp outside of Lander Wyoming. The road up to the camp is much the same, however, I think it's higher and it's unpaved. Glad my mother drove it, lol.

My home state. Wouldn’t want to live anywhere else in the world.

You're fortunate. It's still America there, but not for long.

Our home away from home! We’re from Wisconsin and go through them and boondock camping at least twice a year. We used to haul our horses and ride for a month at a time

WOW that's awesome drive! My sister told me about the bighorn mountain drive, but we took off to East Rapid City. We should have followed them! We were coming from Helena, MT Maybe next time.

I think these mountains are so underrated...went through there 7.5 years ago and loved it!

The Big Horns not that much mining, but Mountain Men Trapping, every little stream. It is beautiful but their is much more to Wyoming Mountains!

What a beautiful mountain covered by pine trees l Thank you for your introduction.of Bighorn National Forest.

"We're going to take 14A" ! That made me laugh out loud! It's a bit of a ride for sure. But, the view on the other side is fantastic, especially if the light is just right. That "'big rock formation" is Steamboat Rock, for obvious reasons. I used to drop 2 of my boys off there when they were teenagers and they would hike around that and back down into Tongue River Canyon out by Dayton, WY to camp and I would pick them up in about 4-5 days depending on when they wanted to come back home.

What a view!!! Thats all I got, there's nothing more to say!!!

Bit Wave Russ. Wow! What else can you say. That ride reminds me of a ride we went on after Yellowstone when we were down there in that area. You know we think those mountains are breathtaking and the switch backs, take your breath away at the top. Would be great if you could go to cloud's peak , west side of the bighorn MTS

I don't remember exact date the road was built, but my family left Wyoming in 1962 and that road had been open for a couple of years. There is the "old Road" just across the canyon that had 10 to 20 switchbacks on it to get to the top. Made for a crazy ride.

Drove that in our 36' motorhome towing a trailer with the wife's Tacoma on it. Stayed on Hwy 14, not 14A, thru Greybull and into Cody. Not a high speed highway with a motorhome. LOL

Good video Russ, but you kept saying that you were at the top. But when you ended you were still going up. Maybe next vid you can show us the top. Ha ha. Take care and be safe out there.

Beautiful mountains ! Be careful around Yellowstone ! I understand that they had one of the biggest Earthquake recorded for that area about 2 days ago , approximately the 15th of August .

That first drone shot was breath taking....

Drone time, beautiful aerial shots with the drone. I think my ears where popping while you where going up that mountain.

Russ I know you have planned your trip but just want to tell you about what became our favorite way into the park. Just North of Cody you can pick up the Chief Joseph scenic byway or like Grandpa called it Dead Indian pass. Takes you through the Gallatin & Shoshone National forests and goes to Cooke City Montana which is basically the NE entrance to the park just to the west. East of Cooke City to Red Lodge is the Beartooth highway. Charles Kuralt called that the most beautiful drive in America. Car & driver calls it one of the most dangerous. Never got to take the trip to Red Lodge but it's on my bucket list. Campers were everywhere in the national forest.

Great video.15:55 The highway was constructed in the 1930s. But there was an unimproved dirt road there before that. Maybe all the way back to the wagon days.

Love the drone footage. Just beautiful! Hope to see you in Yellowstone, but be cautious around the Bison. It's rutting season and the males can be aggressive. Safe travels Russ!

Alt. 14 was definitely the better choice...more scenic!

Cant wait for the video of Shell Canyon,going down to Greybull,Bighorn Basin.Wait till you get on the west side of the Bighorns!

I know I was so bummed when he went down the Lovell Side... when I was watching the video...and he got to the intersection. I kept on saying no turn right ,no turn right.....Dammit....lol...

Beautiful drive, Russ. Thanks for sharing! It is nice when there is much less traffic on the roads. Also less development in that area is very nice. But nice to come upon some of the Lodging places which look quite nice out in the middle of nowhere. I would love to travel through Wyoming myself. Happy Trails and safe travels.

Yes....I agree....Shell Falls,and that view when your in the Canyon. Then when when you come out of the canyon into the Shell Valley..👍💕

Hello Russ, I hope I'm catching you in time. I wanted to tell you about the Heart Mountain interpretive Center. It's 13 miles west of Powell Wyoming this was an internment camp where they kept Japanese Americans during World War II. I thought that you might find it interesting.
