WWII USMC Combat Vet Sent on the .."First attack wave, every damn time" In the South Pacific

Frank Austin, USMC drove the Amtrack that took the infantry to the beaches and supplies. He was sent on the first attack wave.. Every time, at each island in the pacific. He even saw the flag getting raised on Iwo Jima through his binoculars. He tells his story with a great attitude, a little comedy and a deep respect for the ones who did not come home.

I am proud to claim Frank Austin as my brother in law. He was a great man who served his country with honor and pride. He raised a wonderful family and treated all he encountered with respect. I had heard all of these stories and more in the past. It is fantastic that they are now preserved for posterity.

I’m so glad you found it. I think he passed away around 2 weeks after we sat down. He was one of my customers (I do pest control) so when I met him. We hit it off. He actually told me he had to cancel, because his daughter was coming over for lunch. I was bummed but I understood. Then he called me back and said, his daughter told him to do the interview with me. Because they always did lunch. So I’m so blessed I got to spend this time with him. I was very sad to find out that he passed. He was so much fun to talk to. Thank you for the kind words. So sorry for your loss.

I've always been so grateful to have known the WWII generation. As a child I played war with real Nazi and American helmets with hollowed out potato masher hand grenades my friends father brought home from the war..... these men truly were the greatest generation in many ways....

So proud of this man I was lucky enough to call Uncle Frank. He told me so many stories and this brought me right back to his living room, listening rapt as a 11 or 12 year old girl. My mother's brother and one of my heroes. Thank you for this.

The former base on Maui has a memorial and is now a county park. The place is also called Giggle Hill because it's the local Lover's Lane.

Sweating it out by Frank Austin Peoples version of what war must be Is far from what my eyes can see They think of heroes and thunderous guns Of bloody fights and battles won Diving planes and screaming shells Blood flowing deep as battles swell But what about before the fight? The stubby ship a sleepless night The thoughts and memories the fears and doubts Idle hours just sweating it out This part of war we also find Is it as hideous as the battle grime You gaze across the endless sea And wonder what the objective will be Will I make it through this time do you say You’re sure you will but yet you pray As terrible or glorious as war may be The fears and horrors you may see Its not just glory and battle shock Its waiting, wondering, and sweating it out
