WWII Half-Track Paint Job
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
My WW2 White half-track finally gets some attention! I've had this half track for over a decade, and I've only used it to do work, I haven't worked on it. I need to get motivated to work on it, and so I gave it a coat of paint. I used the same lusterless Forest Green, paint code 34052, that I used on my Jeep Grand Cherokee. I think this was a big improvement, and brings it back in line with its World War 2 origins. Now I'm motivated to do some more work on it!

That is a cool perspective. After losing interest on a project you may paint it and get more interested. Always good to glean some knowledge from someone with more projects than myself.
Needs the star on hood and doors, And a 50 cal. For those tailgaters.
It Look amazing! This is the real Color for this Half Truck! Greetings from Germany!

Geeze, what a difference that paint job makes. Looks GREAT.
At the end, I was expecting Ron Pratt. What a exciting ride, when you forget to chock the wheels, definitely an E ticket!

Yes, I noticed the theme from Ron Pratt's towing channel too. Ron's wreckers are a tad more colorful though!
Man that looks better!!! Looks like a proper half-track now! neat old mechine, definitely deserves the tlc👍
Love the newsreel-stye outro!
That painting trick or whatever you want to call it has saved me many times usually by taking the worst part and giving it a nice paint job like the last 42 year old snowblower I restored over six months along with 12 others. The finished piece is so rewarding and motivating to do another and another...
Man I love that tug, that thing is soo cool!
Lifting that 1/2 track really settles the rear suspension on your winch truck! She looks much better in olive green!

Yeah, I wasn't sure it would lift it. The data plate says that the half-track is 19,000 lbs, so that has some heft to it.
I am having a lot of fun watching your videos- So I must be doing it right.
Some of the military olive drab paint was made to self level and you could apply it with a paint brush and it'd level out as it dries. I had a long response typed to the last post you made about this truck and it went away on my tablet. My first car was a 42 Ford GPW Jeep, my second was a 41 military closed cab 1/2 ton weapons carrier pickup with a early Braden MU2 winch. This was in the late 70s early 80s. I had a crazy friend I met because of my power wagon and we knew of a old truck wrecking yard that had 3 white half tracks in various stages of missing body parts. The nicest one had most of the front nose and rear box and was fairly complete with the 30 ton winch on the bumper. Second had the nose and cab similar to yours. Third was just the complete frame and nose with the engine and everything else was gone. We were told they had all driven in 20 years before. I later heard that crazy buddy had managed to make a deal on the two best ones but I never could confirm it as I quit hanging out with him because he truly was mental but he did know a lot about the old power wagons and had many similar to mine. Funny thing Dodge couldn't build the early trucks fast enough because they didn't have enough cabs on hand. Ford, Chevy, and International took mostly completed frames and noses in and adapted their pickup cabs to the Dodge frame and nose. I saw one in a yard with a Chevrolet cab on it perfectly, and my buddy had one with the International cab on it. Back then when I was a teenager those old ww2 military trucks and Jeeps were all over the place and you could buy them pretty cheap, they were just starting to get collected and prices going up but most were considered old all wheel drive trucks and used accordingly and cheap. I paid 1k for the jeep and 1300 for the Power Wagon in 77-78.

It did seem like this paint was meant to be easy to apply, which I sure appreciated! Interesting about the trucks, its amazing all the things that have happened in the past.
Looks great
With a little work it would make one hell of an Offroad Wrecker !
That looks night and day better, it is a real piece of history.
I stumbled across your page a couple of weeks ago. I like watching videos where someone finds some old vehicle, gets it running, and drives it off to their home. Your channel has me laughing at your wit, and the fact that you make do, with what you have on hand, instead of going and buying new parts, makes people like me go: well how about that! I really enjoy being able to watch how you do things, and I thank you, for being real! Thank you for letting us all watch, and hopefully, learn how to make do with what we have available. I have added you to my subscriptions!! Keep strong, stay healthy so we can see more!!
Nice job. Double clutch. Truck tank
From fugley yellow to a nice warm mat green 👍 What a difference that makes. I just got done painting my ‘51 Ford F1 pickup. I owned the truck a few years before deciding to remove the hand brushed farm paint job. To my astonishment military numbers started to appear as we stripped it. The doors, hood and tailgate all had the same truck’s military #’s on them! The id plates had no mention of being a military vehicle. Some unofficial opinion’s are it must of been a bang around base truck or a “follow me” truck from a nearby airbase. The paint under the GI-ID’s was definitely OD. Anyways I recently moved my shop and don’t have 220v yet for my compressor. So with a deadline of a truck show coming up I chose to use around 40 Rustolem 2X forest green spray bombs on the F1. Then I had a local sign maker print some vinyl letters & numbers for it. What a difference! A similar result of the transformation on your half track! Night & Day!! You have a cool channel and a unique twist on the way you do and share your thoughts with us. May you never get stale on your content 😃

Thanks, I sure appreciate that! It sounds like you had a fun project, too. One nice thing about rustoleum on an old truck is that it isn't too shiny, gives it a more authentic work truck look.
Looks pretty dam good for a backyard budget job.put a big star with one inch circle around star and its a stellar job complete.i agree was too much yella around, much better.well done.snooky pa.💥👍💥
That green is impressive. Nice upgrade.
Just needs a couple 50 caliber machine guns to look period correct. ;)
It looks a lot better. Especially with a windscreen frame. Well done.
Hey I'm glad your channel is getting a little attention keep up the good work
I know it's been a long while - but that gasket you asked about - it goes between the engine pipe and the exhaust manifold. Some styles have recesses for them, both ends.
Awesome! Thanks.
Looks good
Another great Sunday afternoon watch, really enjoyed it

All that armor on that half track is really making your Coleman squat a lot in the rear when you try to pick it up
The first 15 minutes almost gave me anxiety disorder for having all that attention to detail popping everywhere!
When I was a youngster I heard there was a halfback across the river from me and I looked and looked but never found it.you have two super cool pieces of history, you rock.
That’s great.
Looks great!
Great show, especially the end music, I marched up and down. Thanks for your time mate, bye.

Rubber gaskets from the glove box are heat sync gaskets for an 80’s gas pool heater
You’re the man, on the prep work! It’s not going to be a museum display! You’re just trying to make it look more “military”.
Very pleased to see your taking an interest in the Half-track. You won't be sorry to put that effort into making improvement to it.
Lovely job 👍
Terrific video - first one of yours I've seen.
Great job donning the half face b4 painting in a tight place. IMO & what I did my best to instill in employees is that you use safety for those who love you.
Love it.
That paint on great leap forward now you want to drive it good concept.
Love all your Junk, wish I had a few interesting trucks like that to just admire and realize that these Bad Boys won our freedom in our past. And should be saved and respected for future generations
Great work James , motivation in projects is the key for sure
Big white star on each door.
Looks much better in green.
hell yea it turned out great I love watching you!

I use GCI olive drab on my equipment. Its made to military spec and color. It is a simple one step old school paint. Shoots and covers great and is holding up very well on my excavator. That forest green looks pretty good though!
Your 5 speed zj is epic.
Congrats LBG on getting the Half Track paint job looking great. lets see this Beast run on it own power..
Sweet!, my painting prep is exactly like yours and im partial to OD green or hunter green rustoleum. Drives my artist GF nuts cuz im blind in one eye and it doesnt see colors good so i have the perfect excuse for never painting anything other then my junk.
Looks heaps better. Everyone wants an army truck...
It’s amazing what some paint can do.

I should have showed it better in the video, but they're actually made of a soft and squishy rubber. Definitely some kind of gasket, though.
Another awesome and fun project. That drab olive army green is perfect! It will match my GPW perfectly. Wanna sell? Just kidding, my wife would kill me if I drag another toy home. Great video ✌️

Thats a cool ride... get her to blow some smoke!
Looks much better in the matte green! Time for a roof?
Nicely done
Niiiiiiiice! Didn't see this coming
A brilliant 12 out of 10 with out doubt one of the best on KZread.stay safe.
Just discovered your channel. I really enjoy your content. Here in Australia, I have owned and restored jeeps including a CJ5 and a CJ3B, so this brings back great memories. My approach was very different (more $) but I'm enjoying your low buck approach. Looking forward to more content.

Dude, didn't you ever hear of lightning, it will turn you into a crispy critter!!
Hi, I just joined your site. I watch every program you put out. You are one good fabricator! I think you should paint your tug the same color as the half-track. Just how many jeeps do you own and where do you find them all? I just bought a 1954 M-38 A-1 army jeep that came from Calif, and is pretty rust free, It runs good but like you I'm making changes to my liking. Keep your videos coming! Wish I had you for my neighbor. Bob
Looking good buddy!

There was absolutely nothing wrong with that duct tape!

Needs a big white star on the doors..... Oh just looked at next video!!!
Nice transformation. I’m not sure if anyone noticed or not, but at ~9:45 the gin poles were waaaay to close to the electrical service drop
if thats how you planned to paint it, I would have happily volunteered to do it correctly for you
You're right nothing on that vehicle is like it was designed to stop 8 mm Mauser but yes I'm glad you're giving the old girl a little bit of attention
Got my daily dose of sarcasm!
I can't believe how much some green paint butched up that rig.
May we see some of that Ford Garden Tractor. A friend is a big collector of those. (Just the camera walking past is enough and perfect).

Can you send an email to james@low-buck-garage.com? I can attach one in a reply.
I like these videos but I've always wondered where people are picking up these half-tracks from, I never come across any for sale. Ever.
I had noticed that whoever had painted it yellow had stripped it all down first. Maybe even rolled it on its side? It looks amazing now.
Adding again on the wall half-track. The screw on the bowl . Does that stop float /regulate fuel flow or was that later product???
Love to put a 12 valve in one of these.. only if I could find one in my area !!!
Just discovered you channel. Awesome! Usually Marigold (i.e. Cat Yellow) means it doesn't run. Thiokol tracks?
You could cover your eyeglass lenses with plastic wrap while painting also.
Half track looks way better with the paint job, I think the tug could use a tilting boom like that one.
Wish I could find a running half track. My good friend just sold his completely restored half track. For a ton on money more then I could have afford.
😆 sorry! Did you need to call a tow-truck to get you outta the sand-buggy? Hey I like your shows.....
You should call your channel low effort garage.
