It wasn't much better in schools in the 1980s. Apart from the rise of the Nazis and Communism, actual WW2 battles were hardly mentioned. I self taught myself about WW2. School didn't teach me in the 1980s. Lots of WW2 films still on tv too, which lead me to search for more information.

D-Day wasn't really a turning point, it was a huge thrust on a trajectory that had been building since 1942-3. Actual (positive) turning points for the UK were Battle of Britain and Second Battle of El Alamein.

Agree with JasmineH88, more young Britons know more about the Alphabet and non-alphabet communities and relationships now than their history, others are just taught by the leaders in their places or peaceful worship. They will be remembered xx

It takes three generations to leave living memory so WW2 will be largely forgotten by 2035, just as WW1 disappeared from view in 2008.

Not for some. I am still in awe of my great uncle. He died in pas de Calais. 20 yes old . I will never forget the men who gave their lives and neither will my grandchildren or my six great grandchildren. Now we have another fight coming and must be prepared and that includes the history of ww1 and ww2. We must never forget these men and women because what they gave to this great country is now being eroded and a war is coming. God help us learn the lessons they tried to teach because we are going to need them

So only 20% of young Britons arent aware of an event that happened over 70 years ago that they most likely dont have any living relative to tell them about it? And 80% do know about it? Thats actually pretty impressive in my books.

What are they teaching people these days!? Nobody over the age of 12-13 shouldn't know & not have a deep understanding of what D-Day & other fundamental historical events were. Let alone be leaving school without that knowledge.

If only to help spot the rise in fascist rhetoric we’re seeing across Europe and the US. It’s not acceptable.
