WW2 P38 pilot reunited with his plane

a 100-year old ww2 pilot visiting a colorado air museum found the old p-38 lightening he flew in the south pacific... the chance encounter is military history in and of itself, but now the old pilot wants one more trip to the cockpit of his old ship that saved his life during the war

On the ground after the brief return to the sky, Royal had a wide grin. "Mentally, I was flying it," he said. Had tears in my eyes after reading that. God bless all these fine gents and women who served. Gramps, Hope you have a fine time in heaven meeting these people!

What a guy and what a clear mind at 100 years old! My late father was a USAF Colonel and flew fighters from southern England (Spitfires and P-51's). He lived to be 95 years old and seemed much like this fellow. Someone you would want as your wingman. Thank you for your service and sacrifice...I pray we can keep the country you fought for and left us.

27 sourpuss' can't stand to see a heartfelt moment in one's life especially us vets who've given up so much. Sitting in a B-17 that saw much of WWII took me back in time as well. The DC-3's my dad jumped out of during D-Day behind German lines are a stark reminder what had to be used to get the job done. Mine were C-141's.

Love this story! The 39th SQ of the 35th FG was a colorful and distinguished unit, boasting 12 aces, including Thomas Lynch (20 kills). Top ace Dick Bong (40 kills) also flew with the unit while on loan from the 9th Fighter Sq. It's amazing they were able to recover and restore this historical machine, and that one of it's original pilots could be reunited with it. God bless Mr. Royal, I hope he can see the Lightning fly again!

What a champion you just have to love their humility, and they will never be forgotten. Also my favourite plane of WWII despite a few short comings it found a role and served with distinction along with its pilots and ground crews. 100 years and still going strong, you really could just sit for days, weeks, months and listen to the stories even if slightly embellished haha what a gentleman

a 2nd cousin, once removed(i think this is the relationship)was charles earnhardt, he flew p38s in north africa, doolittle awarded him the air medal. he had 7 kills, so he was an ace. shot down twice and was a pow for the rest of the war. promoted to major. we are both related to the earnhardts racing family. in 1974 he was murdered when 2 guys raided his pharmacy looking for drugs.

The bonds with the pilots and their planes, a lot of people dont know that kind of bond. My great grandfather and my grandfather had their bonds with the b24s they flew. My great grandfather could recognize his b24 with one simple look to the cockpit, if there was a bullet hole right where the main pilot sat at, that was his b24, after years of being retired, in 1992 there was a hangar in Waco Texas where they had some retired b24s and he knew his was there because he was luck enough to not be shot down in ww2, he saw his plane with its leftover sum faded black paint and the bullet hole where a German soldier shot down from the mountains they were flying through in a classified operation lagoon green. As a few months went by, my great grandfather flew his b24 once again at the age of being 80 years old he knew how to fly that ol bird.
