    A point about the Mills Bomb, 36m Grenade. The grenade does not fracture along the lines making small square fragments. Those lines & grooves are actually to aid gripping the grenade with cold wet muddy hands. The fragmentation is jagged smaller pieces.

    Replica helmets could also be made with the shell of a dispatch rider helmet. In fact the early metal dispatch rider helmets were identical to the early fibre rim helmets. Not to lang ago a airsoft MKV stengun was made and it looks spot on! Ther are instances were the toggle rope was used pulling handcarts. The gas cape were indeed popular to be used as raincoat being treated to withstand gas liquid. A liquid that would penetrate a uniform and turn into gas. The entrenching tool helve would in 1944 have an attchement for the bayonet so it could be as a mine prod. These were issued to the divisions spearheading the invasion first. Alsough photograpic evidence shows some men still without these. Some served till the end of the war without them. After having blancoed your kit you nedded to brush it a bit to remove the powder residue. Postwar Newey studs were nickel plated probably not done during wartime to save nickel. The tail is quit weid because when you waer a parachute harness there is a nowballs chance in hell that you smock would ride up! The nickname donkey's tail came from Africa. The Arabs refered to the paratroopers as men with donkey tails. Some men simply cut them off. The scrim scarf was issued to every soldier in the army, although not all with brown camouflage. Officialy it was called face veil. Instead of painting you face. You could tie it over you face /head. No problem with vision. The cap comforter was still used in the 80's bij the Dutch army. The Dutch commando's still use them as headwear during trainig. These can be found cheap in surplus shops and the Dutch used colour near identical to ww2 Canadian BD. The gaiters /anklets as shown on the bot is wrong. The straps should point to the rear of the boot! In Nijmegen 1944 the British MPs actually caught 2 Germans dressed as British officers because they wore their anklets wrong. (A mortal sin as an officer!) The British Royal Navy also did not had toecaps. The Dutch BD trousers also had the ww field dress pocket but was withdrawn for field and used as as a best dress probably without the field dressing pocket

    Late to the show. I just stumbled on this video. I am quite pleased that someone went through all this effort to make an impression of a Canadian paratrooper from 1 Can Para (I don't believe it is correct to say "First Canadian parachutist".. minor point. I am a retired Canadian soldier who is modern day para qualified. Again, nice to see this. I believe your comment on the yellow shoulder flashes may be incorrect. I always believed these denoted soldiers of Hill's brigade (3rd). I could look it up but it's late and I'm off to bed. Good work.

    Para started to be used in the 60's. During WW2 Parachute for units and parachutist for the men although paratrooper became more popular. WW2 veterans hardly ever use Para to name their unit, it seems some even dislike it.

    @@jimomaha7809 I don't believe I said they used the term 'para' per se. I'm talking about the official name of the unit: First Canadian Parachute Bn'. Interesting that, in the early months/years, Canadians became torn somewhat between 2 airborne philosophies/SOPs... We started by having jumpers trained at US schools. As a result, soldiers started adopting Corcoran jump boots etc. Then training shifted to UK schools and 1 Can Para became part of UK 6 AB Div. Brown Corcorans were replaced by ankle boots and gaiters... then there's the FSSF...

    great job on the impression, just a few comments......Sten magazine carrier was not blancoed, cap badge is supposed to be Bakelite, officers wore the metal cap badge, small pack is too low it needs to be in between the shoulder blades, missing the FS knife, Blanco was KG03, airborne tab was not worn as they were ordered removed by Brig-Gen Hill June 20, 1944 orders WOL En7/54/Gen 9632 (AG4C) and withdrawn completely by December 31, 1944

    Hey, I am the guy in the video. Thanks for the comments! As per Blancoing the Sten bandolier, I have opted to go outside of standard re-enacting practice; I have decided in portraying the exception and not the norm, there are very few pictures of Sten Bandoliers being blancoed in Normandy during the summer, think one or two. But for this item it was also blancoed because the reproduction is quite poor and this just masks the poor quality of it. I am aware of the standard practices that non-personal effects such as rifle slings, map cases, and bandoliers were not to be blancoed as each solider would have to pay for said item, but I wanted to do it. Finding a quality reproduction bakelite cap badges are extremely difficult, after searching re-enactor forums and facebook pages I just went with what the community deemed as perfectly adequate badge. It will be upgraded when something comes about that is quality. Getting the equipment to sit correctly is a constant battle, it either sags to one side is too low or is too high, If memory serves me correctly I had not set everything up to fit with the new dimensions of the Denison Smock. Since this video everything has been properly fitted. No, the FS knife was not issued to every paratrooper of the 6th ABN, so it is not lost on this impression. If I was wearing ABN Trousers then the FS would have been missing, I think in the post war years re-enactors believe that it was issued in wider numbers than it actually was. Blanco is Dutch KG03 from that weird transitional period were the Dutch Army was copying British uniform and equipment. This is the closest thing on the market to original British Wartime KG03. OldTimeDesignCompany carries the powder now, it was on eBay when I got it a few years ago. Airborne Tab- redundant as I am not portraying that time period, I am seeking to portray immediate landing in Normandy June 6th-7th respectfully. If I shift my focus to another Canadian landing, say, Operation Varsity a lot would change to meet the operational requirements for that impression. Since the publication of this video I have improved my impression, I have done away with the officers modified blouse, and I have a "first pattern" Denison smock made by C.W.S. in 1942. With those improvements in mind there are several that I still need to get to take the impression to the next level: such as a proper recognition scarf, life preserver, oversmock, A Mk.I helmet with or without fibre rim, an original cap comforter, proper 24 hour rations, fork, knife, and spoon set, tins for boiled sweets and cigarettes with contents for both, string vest and jumper.

    Bakelite ( officially economy) capbadges were introduced for saving metal. But were not for replacing metal badges entirly. Every soldier would receive a metal capbadge with addional economy badge. The metal badge would be worn during parades or when of duty, although it was officially not allowed for nco /officers to forbide men to wear them on any occasion. Bakelite was not the material used for these badges but a kind of cellulose acetate. These can / will warp in heat and deterioate when it became to moist. Men would uselaly receive a brass (at time nickel plated) capbadge and NCC ranks could wear a bi-metal (if it was a design in the badge) plated + brass parts. Officer could go for a bronze or silver or embroided badge at their own exspense. The first paratroopers would receive a FS knife although later their had to buy one. Officers could be presented one. Officially KG 3 blanco some units still used the old pea green (in the 1st airborne). Airborne tab officially should be removed for all parachute units. But for Normany ccould be used. All allowed badges would be worn on the best dress jacket. In the field some had a minimum or no badges at all.

GPR put in requests for them post Normandy. 2nd Para Brigade even used Thompson's in the Mediterranean. MKVs were on the increase with airbourne forces in 1944, though not yet complete.

    Hey Gr Ba, I am the dude in the video. Phil showed me the picture you linked him from the PegasusArchives, unfortunately I do not believe that Mk. II to be the property of the RECCE Paras in the photo. I believe that the Mk. II is more likely to belong to the locals in the photo; as they are named it would not be a far fetched idea to think that they where known members of the Dutch Underground Resistance. We know for a fact that the British armed local populations with large numbers of Mk. II's as part of the SOE for fuelling resistance movements in Europe. We also know that the Paras where overwhelmingly issued and I would venture to guess exclusively Mk. V's post Operation Husky in 1943. I do not recall ever coming across a picture of British Paras ever using the Mk. II past 1943. One other thing, GPR never had to request for Mk. V's as they were the issued Machine Carbine post 1943, phasing out the Mk. II for the Paras and GPR. This photo post D-Day it was taken in Oosterbeek likely on or around September 17th, 1944 during Operation Market Garden. The picture is great and I thank you for sharing it, as I have never seen before, although frequenting that website! www.pegasusarchive.org/arnhem/Photos4/Pic_RecceJeep2.htm?fbclid=IwAR1Eo96KDrxfRBysVaByYuA3pTWlvzHKMj79tMdwTBbfoIuJyRrvMkcoxfU

    Very impressive kit! Always humbling and interesting to see someone, who's done their research and spent their time and money in order to re-enact history accurately. I have a question about the rope described at around 8 minute mark: would that be something that the parachutists would keep with them after landing, in combat? I guess that would be quite heavy and cumbersome after a while, while being relatively easy to replace for each jump if discarded.

  • @StormRiders

    @StormRiders

    It’s not 100% clear if there was one singular approach. It’s likely it was not discarded out of hand though, and kept at a rally area, once one was set up behind the front line.

    Just got to add, the flap on the smock was because all the webbing and kit went underneath the smock to stop it catching on the parachute lines. also, an extra grey sleeveless and short legged jump suit was placed over the smock and then the parachute to again stop snagging of the ropes of the parachute. Edit:I was inaccurate, read the reply for the facts.

    Hi there, I'm the fella in the video, just a quick comment about the smocks usage, the webbing went over top of the Denison with the braces going through the epaulettes and when the small pack was worn it was affixed to the universal pouches by means of the L-straps of the small pack. This was done because the small pack would be removed frequently so placing under the epaulettes was seldom practiced. The webbing never went underneath the Denison Smock, it was always worn as shown in this video. While conducting parachute landings the denim Olive Drab 1942 pattern Oversmock was worn which was a a means to secure the webbing in a sturdy and simple way, the Oversmock design was repurposed from the first "Airborne" specific bit of uniform which was copied from the German Knochensack (known as the "BoneSack," in 1941. You are correct in stating that the Oversmock prevents snagging of the webbing with the risers. I am currently writing a research paper on the war time Denison smock, if you would like to learn more feel free to either PM me or write the Stormriders email. I truly love the smock and the history that surrounds it so I would be more than happy to answer any of your questions surround wartime examples or post war examples!

    @@jonledrew1472 cheers thanks for replying and correcting me. I thought it was( obviously wrongly), smock to the Denison smock had a closing flap, which I though would contain any webbing underneath, and the rest of the kit (including the small pack) would be in a drop bag. Anyway Thanks for correcting me, or I would have continued with a false assumption.

    @@gfingers9117 Hey man no problem! I really don't understand the use of the tail because the Oversmock makes it kind of redundant. The leg bag would be used for anything and everything, the key for all Allied airborne operations was speed this is why they dropped wearing all of their kit. For their rifles they would be stored in a felt Valise.

    Hey there, I am the dude in the video. This smock was made by Steve Kiddle a fella who lives in the UK and makes a very convincing "Hand Painted" smock. Be warned he does not make many, a batch of 25 at a time and they take better part of a year to complete, they are also quite pricey I spent around 700 dollars Canadian on that smock and for me it's totally worth it. Outside of Steve Kiddles work Frank Brown also reproduces the same "Hand Painted" smock. I would personally avoid Solider of Fortune and What Price Glory because the colouring is way off and the construction is poor, I would however look for a older run of What Price Glory's smocks, an easy way to tell if it's an older run is if it isn't dominantly orange, rather a dominate softer green. Alternatively another vender, Old Time Design Company is coming up with their own line Denison smocks that look to be promising, happy hunting! If you have anymore questions surrounding repros or original smocks feel free to send us a message I am more than happy to help!
