  • @GoodsellAmplifiers

    4 жыл бұрын

Nathan Downing - Zawinul probably did play a 140, but the definitive Ray Charles tone from ‘What I’d Say’ was the earlier 120, which had longer reeds and cruder action. The soundboards and reeds from the 140/145 were interchangeable with the later and best-known 200, so their sound was much closer. FWIW, the Fender Rhodes was initially available only as the bass version, with the 73 and 88 to follow in ‘66 or ‘67, well after ‘Mercy, Mercy, Mercy’ was originally penned.

Your Wurli sounds KILLER! Seems like it's got more bark/bite than normal.. Gotta be running it into a tube amp or something. It's voiced really well. 👍👍 I have a rare colored Avocado Green top 200a from 1976 myself. Love me some Wurli's! 😎 Steely Dan tunes: Chained Lightening, Black Friday.. A couple of my favorites. A lot of people get the Wurli & Pianet mixed up.. They sound real similar, yet they have their own thing going on.

Rick Wright's electric piano was integral in nearly all floyd songs. In fact there would be no floyd 'sound' without Rick Wright's keyboard.

I think maybe "not integral" is an inaccurate way to describe what you were trying to say. It's definitely not the main motif, melody, lead, etc. But it is integral because it acts like the punctuation and structural support to the song. Without that call and response harmony section and the way its panned you have a highly repetitive bass line that gets old real quick (like a run on sentence). Also just as a harmony section the keyboard and guitar provide context and support to the key changes and melody. While the song is highly melodic and rhythmic, it still relies on harmony for structure and to remain listenable.

The Wurlitzer (the model 200a like you have) was apparently Donny Hathaway's favorite keyboard. You can hear it on his songs like "The Ghetto" and "This Christmas" (not the solo part but the accompaniment).

@@Steadman711 I suppose that could have been a Rhodes on "This Christmas", but on hits like "The Ghetto" and his famous live album in 1972, I'm pretty sure that was a Wurly. You can actually see what looks like a 200a on the cover of the live album.
