    I'm glad to see there are still plenty of people outside of China who can appreciate these types of forms. So many people, especially in the USA are all about MMA, or how effective certain techniques are in a real fight. Even if these forms look like dances, I can definitely see how they can cultivate your body and mind. To be able to perform these forms well, require skill and some athleticism.

    I totally agree... martial arts is not just one thing. There's lots of different interpretations and that's okay. A lot of the traditional guys though will claim their style is good for self defense but won't put in any effort to cultivate their style for real combat. They're ultimately lying to themselves and the people who they train

    @@thomasbrown3793 That's a fact. I train a traditional MA and used to defend Kung Fu from its detractors. But, looking for another Sifu (after mine left the area) gave me a sampling of many Chinese MA schools and, invariably, they were all about forms, supposed "chi power", too deadly to spar yada yada, so, even though I train it, I'm also bad mouthing Chinese arts along with the rest.

    I like how they really kind of represent the animals. The mantis one is quick, small movements and nimble, being small forces it to defend itself, but it will not fall without fighting. The dragon one is moving in one direction with big steps, almost like its showing off, it shows greatness and power, thinking nothing will step on his way, but he wouldn’t have claws if that was the case. And the snake keeps it low, only coming up when its cornered, moving side to side as quick as possible, it might not be the strongest, but its also not the weakest.

    Without fighting martial arts is for health only. Only through adversity, apply what you learn, then you can truly learn about yourself. Martial arts is not the only way to learn about yourself. I'd rather believe that we learn martial arts to protect someone or something, it doesn't mean that you have to fight all the time, but must make sure always be ready for a fight in order to protect or to fight where injustice happens. Training must always be done to prepare, but also must be able to understand its basic philosophy for a good life.

    These styles can also augment other styles. Think of how you can throw you opponent off balance as you throw some quick, unexpected snake strikes at their guard and then shift to boxing/striking. Very practical if applied with an open mind.

    @@TheBrendon67 Quite true! Master Yuan Xiu Gang, who is the master of the school I'm showing here says just that. He has trained MMA fighters, not to go in the ring, they train that at their own MMA gym, but to be more well rounded. They work on the things that Wudang culture and martial arts are good at, flexibility, coordination, balance. Not only physically, but mental balance, focus and discipline too. They do sparring every day at the school, but they are not doing groundwork or training for MMA competitions. The MMA and Wudang don't have to be mutually exclusive, they can be trained together to round a person out if they would like to fight in the ring/cage.

    Learn martial arts, not to fight? I’m sorry, but what’s the point of learning how to kick someone in the face if you’re not trying to learn how to... get this... kick someone in the face? If you want to exercise, then there are ways to exercise that don’t give you a false sense of confidence in your ability to fight someone who’s seriously trying to hurt you. If you want balance and inner peace, there are ways to achieve that without learning ineffectual ways of thrusting your hands in someone’s face in the middle of a fight.

    the Mantis form shown is the form created by Yu Hai in the 80s. Yu Hai was a student of Seven Star Mantis master Lin Jing Shan. Yu Hai is considered the father of modern Wushu Mantis. There are still elements of traditional Mantis within this form, however traditional Mantis never does those "shaky mantis poses". To see traditional Seven Star Mantis look up any students of Lin Jing Shan, such as his grandson Lin Dong Zhu, or Zhong Lian Bao or Yu Tian Cheng

    Cool, thanks for the info on Lin Jing Shan! Yu Hai was friends with my Shifu who passed away recently, Pan Qing Fu. They were in the Shaolin Temple movie together. I heard that Zhong Yun Long was sent out from Purple Heaven Temple in the 80s to invite Daoist masters and Kung Fu masters to come back to Wudang after the cultural revolution and also to learn from the outside and bring things back. I wonder if he learned this from Yu Hai and brought it to Wudang or if Yu Hai traveled to Wudang to teach it? I'll have to ask them.

    The forms were not meant to be a way of fighting, but rather a way of remembering. A moving encyclopedia. In my study of karate, I found out most of what was called “blocks” could be used as strikes, and what I considered strikes could be used as blocks. Then later I found out the strikes and blocks were the basic movements for escapes, locks, and throws. And also cataloged pressure points placements and angles they were to be attacked. My style has hundreds of katas. But with the layers of information each kata contained you could study the basics for a year and still not glean all the info they contained.

    What are these forms part of if not from shaolin? Does Tai Chi or Bagua have their own versions of animal styles?

  • @DaWeiGongfu

    @DaWeiGongfu

    2 жыл бұрын

    These are from Wudang. Shaolin and Wudang are two of the major types of martial arts in China. Shaolin is based in Buddhism and Zen, and Wudang is based in Taoism (Daoism) and the concepts of the iChing and Dao De Jing. Shaolin and Wudang have a certain amount of animal styles. Tai Chi is based on a legend of Zhang San Feng seeing a snake a and crane fighting and it inspired him in his martial arts. So, it has some animal based movements, but isn't a specific animal style. I'm not as familiar with bagua, but I don't think it has the same basis in animal movements. It's main feature is circularity, the iChing and yin and yang concepts.
