I mean let's be honest, this is how most fights that don't involve professional fighters look like! Even when it involves martial artists. I think Bruce Lee and other martial arts stars created this romanticized view of what people think every martial artist should look like when in reality fights are a lot more disorganized and involve more gross motor skills than people think.

@Mayowa ok now you're just being racist and narrowminded. And how are you so sure you could beat them with Muay Thai? Are you a Muay Thai champion? So Muay Thai is the end all be all of martial arts? Sounds like you're being a little naive. All martial arts have strengths....and they also have weaknesses. Muay Thai is no exception.

@afranks8566 It's no secret that it changed rapidly when it was exposed to Western boxing. Muy Thai is great because they use they test and examine the evidence of what works. If schools kept practicing Muy Boran without actually fighting, I don't believe that they'd be effective either. It's not East vs West, it's training fighting vs dancing. Folks who focus on forms can do beautiful forms well, folks who fight can fight. There's some overlap. Both build stronger bodies and can lead to injury. However, these gentlemen were delusional in their overestimations

Your comment is very interesting but also very wrong. For most people and all historians, Macau 1954 isn't "Communist China" but fascist (and very anticommunist) Portugal... It has something to do with, you know (I hope), colonialism. It makes your other comment "They're probably relatives of the local Communist Party Chairman" very funny too, because a Communist wouldn't be invited in a territory ruled by Portugal, a fascist country at this time. And when you look about the biography of one of the fighters (Wu Kung-i), you even see he fled Communist China to live in Hong Kong (an English territory at this time, as you may know)...

When I watched this fight the first time, my reaction was "What happened to the beautiful Kung Fu?" I think that we get trained to expect beautifully choreographed fights from all the Action Films that Jackie Chan made. This is important footage as a testament to how real martial arts fights never look good or clean. As far as I can tell, neither master was trying to showcase the beautifully-looking "styles" that we normally see in training videos; they were demonstrating that after training in one style or another, they had the means to defend themselves against punches and kicks. What I got out of this is that with the Chinese martial arts, the form is there for strength and sensitivity training, but a fighter doesn't restrict himself to the beautiful-looking movements of the form. He uses the muscle memory and strength built up from training to defend himself during combat. Also, did anyone pick up on the subtitles? This was a charity event, not an animosity-filled challenge fight. I think we KZreadrs who enjoy watching martial arts can learn some humility from these masters. The fight was stopped because both masters had demonstrated their point; Pak Hok Pai showed the ferocity of White Crane, and Wu Gongyi defended himself pretty well (considering that he's a much much older man!). They were NOT out for blood.

狮城武生 : You are miss-led by those kung-fu films made by Jackie Chan or Jet Li even Bruce Lee. The kung-fu styles or patterns used in the fighting is entertainment which would not last for a few minutes as in the road (street) fight. On the other hand those fighting patterns are pre-set by the kung-fu instructor or director in the dramatic (or even comical) way. Otherwise how does a film last for 2 hours.

When you train in wrestling or boxing your fighting looks like your training, bjj tai boxing or any effective martial style you train the way you fight. To practice movements you don't intend to use or can't use in a real fight is silly and less than pointless it's counterproductive.

These guys look like two uncoordinated kids fighting in a elementary school in their first ever fight where neither one knew how to throw a punch or kick. I know White Crane and Tai Chi. The one thing I don't like about this fight was how the rules were set up. Judges made it so that kicks, throws, and joint locks weren't allowed, so that really limited the available techniques. For anybody familiar with Taijiquan, you'd realize that it's primarily a grappling art. As for Tibetan White Cran, I'm not that familiar....

Back to 2014? Why not Francis... People these days have worked out (through trial and error) that you have to train in a Muay Thai/Full Contact style for standing and an MMA/Wrestling/BJJ style if you want to be able to fight for real, either standing or on the ground. Muay Thai and the "mixed matches" in Holland in the 1970's were way ahead of the curve. The grappler would win 8 out of 10 of those fights with a simple takedown of the striker, ending quickly with a choke or joint lock - all well before BJJ made it's debut onto the World stage. Now MMA is a constantly evolving, hybrid performance art that's enjoyed by millions worldwide, with a well established set of rules in place to make it as safe as possible for the participants. Also it's still news when a half decent Muay Thai fighter gets beaten and it's likely as not, by a style that's delivery system is virtually a carbon copy of Muay Thai. Nowadays lots of people see MMA working well and have forgotten all that went before. Imaginary situations dealt with with one or two strikes etc. Joe Rogan has said all this way better than I can. I'm lucky that I started (by chance) Muay Thai training back in the 1980's. It's been a reliable reference point for me as to what works in a fight and what doesn't. The training the guys in this video did for all those years reaped little reward when it came to the crunch - from what I can see. I'm not poking anyone in the eye with my comments btw - it's just the way it is.

Those kung-fu fighters were amateur kung-fu practitoners with part-time practice at night after work (mostly in Thai-land). But their opponents were professional ring-fighters( Is it fair competition ?) Some of the kung-fu fighters even first time fought with gloves in their lives. This happened 80 years ago. By that time China was still not yet open to the world, good fighters were all in China mean-land. It is meaningless to boost the old grand-grand fathers` (out of date) story. Let`s come back to 2000 yr. and focus on the performances of Yi Long, Fang-Bian, Liu Hai-Long, Zhang Kai-Yin,......Philo68, please wake up from your old dreams and look at the new information ! 不要再懐旧了!!!

Philo68 Let us go back to 1930 : by the time, none of the Chinese table-tennis player entered the Quarter-final in table-tennis world cup. But around 2000 China swept all the champions in man-single and double , woman-single and double in table-tennis world cup ! Another example : in 1930 America was the richest nation in the world, but around 2000, it bears a heavy debt almost a few hundred billion dollars, in average every American has to share a loan about 30 thousand dollars . It seems it needs to clear this heavy debt by 2 generations at least. If your time-machine could go back to Tang dynasty of China (1500 years ago). King of Siam had paid a visit to China every year to honor the emperor of Tang Dynasty !

I know guys who don't train at all but are just born hard as nails - they'd go through these chaps like shit through a goose! I have not ( nor ever would say) that nobody from Kung Fu or China can scrap. I do still maintain that Muay Thai or similar performance based martial arts are way more effective than these two clowns going at it. Yi Long and all the other (non Thai) fighters are great but it's still big news when he beats any Muay Thai fighters and it's with similar training methods and a similar delivery system. The shit these guys are trying does not work. Open your eyes! I don't need a time machine gentleman, I have this video - this is old footage hence my 1930's quote about the Kung Fu vs Muay Thai meeting. I thought it would serve to illustrate how badly the "internal arts" performed against a superior system of fighting that served them so royally. Things have changed for the better in this day and age and I applaud that progress. Toshio Fujiwara is one of my favorite fighters ever. Do I dislike him because he's not Thai? No, because I'm not that childish. I guarantee that Fujiwara and all the guys who went/go against Muay thai and win, train in a style similar to them. I also guarantee that (apart from a freak accident) any of the training the guys in this footage did would not be effective in a real situation or ring fight. Hohn Khew Wong "Those kung-fu fighters were amateur kung-fu practisoners with part-time practice at night after work (mostly in Thai-land). But their opponents were professional ring-fighters( Is it fair competition ?) Some of the kung-fu fighters even first time fought with gloves in their lives" Boo Hoo! I feel so sorry for them. If you step into the square jungle you know it's about to go down. If you live in Thailand you may have an inkling of what you're up against don't you think? The two guys here had no gloves and look how lethal they were! Simply chilling technique... I'm not going to argue about where all the real fighters in China, Russia, England or anywhere else were back in the day (which is when this footage is from). I'm just going to let this footage speak for itself. It's far more powerful than any sniggering or comments I am capable of posting. What's next? A public challenge and more (hopefully not so appalling) footage for this website?

I have no horse in this race, but it seems to me that even with these two contestants, we would all be singing different tunes about the video if and only if both contestants fought with razor sharp katars (keep the fighting style, just add the weapon). Having a katar shoved repeatedly into your head brings a whole new meaning to "martial arts."

It looked really funny because it the past there was no real sparring training, each school just practiced closed doors, and restricted their trainings to the solo & fixed punching sequence... This is why when it cane to full contact fights, neither fighter looked well trained, and it appeared like a street fight between amateurs!!

Till maybe 30-40 years ago, martial arts were something conceptually different... One was what they tought in clubs, one was the fight. One thing did not even meet the other. At that time, in western world, just boxe, savate and little other were "real" figthing methods, other like all Kung Fu stiles were just...choreography, healty art, tradition. So, even masters like those in the video, were useless in real fighting... Just some styles promoted barehands real fight, like taekwondo, kyokushin karate and other... Take a look to some picture or videos of Grand Master Hee Hil Choo (taekwondo) he was used to win barehands fights by KO, 30-40 years ago!

Collus Gouki Khan Don`t use the present (2015) concept to judge the old event 60 years (1954) ago. So many Chinese kung-fu fighters are in the ring nowadays. Why don`t you pass comments on their performance. Yi Long defeated so many world class, even multi-world class, kick boxers ,TKD and Muay Thai champions. Don`t tell me that you did not see the recent fight : Fang Bian KO-ed the world ranked NO. 1, Top Muay Thai champion in Jan, 2015 unless you have day-blindness or night-blindness. You blamed an old tai-chi school master not even champion of a small place (Hong Kong) but not those world champions in big countries like America, New Zealand, Canada and Germany defeated by Chinese title-less small flies in the present international platforms. That shows you are a racial extremist with biased discrimination !!!

By the way, Grand master Hee Hil choo (TKD) had no chance to meet Yi Long, otherwise, he would be another Young Jin-Meng (the korean national and world TKD champion !) I say this knowing full well that one of the practitioner's here is a white crane stylist, not a practitioner of tai chi chuan. White crane is better suited for boxing but there isnt much "boxing" here. More of a sloppy slapfest. Anyone know why they agreed to this at all?

This video does no justice to Taijiquan. These men were not even using it. And I know, because I have used it in fights and it looked nothing like this. For example, someone in a bar once came at me with an over-head hammer fist. I stepped back one step, caught their wrist with my outer wrist, used a rollback-press, and put them on their ass with one spiraled movement. They hit the ground so hard on their ass that they actually thought I had thrown them and told everyone that's what I had done. Taiji is like magic once you're using it correctly. This? I don't know what this is.

If you expect a kungfu fighter to fight like what you see Jackie Chan does in the movies or Jet Li, you are too naive or you simply have been watching too much kungfu movies. Be real.you can train in any martial art but when you fight you fight any way you can that gives you the best results in any given situation. --The style is internal and in their training, not necessary explicit or demonstrated explicitly in actual fight.

Leonard Orr it could cal it a "major event" because it was public: there was clearly a large crowd who dressed up to see it, tickets were sold, and it was televised - this suggests there was some story leading to the event and there was great anticipation about the fight itself. Most of what Chan hak fu seemed to be doing looks like choy lee fut, which makes sense because Pak Hok Pai shares a southern root. It is clear that neither intended to enter a grappling game or even lock submission. You could view this as stand up strike sparring which is inline with boxing/kick boxing. Fighting is messy, the aim of good martial arts should be to end a fight as quickly as possible. This clearly doesn't do that. In my opinion Chan hak fu does deserve respect he fought using his style's hand techniques, landing some good 'hooks' and seemed to be a bit more stable. While not the greatest 'fight' these men were prepared to show their dedication and risk their reputations. Most of the people commenting here (including me) wouldn't do this type of event because it's so risky. I guess you could call them honourable fools but to disrespect their teaching and skill because yes those haymakers are in kung fu, just not the pretty kung fu you are used to seeing. I agree that they were probably not sufficiently trained for a fight.

I felt lonely to make comments (technical analysis) in detail to rectify the mistakes which master Wu had made in his Tai-chi movements so as to enlighten the Tai-chi followers. Hopefully, the Tai-chi practitioners could realize the applications of the inward and outward coilings (内,外缠丝手). The most important thing is not losing your confidence in Tai-chi. Recently I watched a video that a wing-choon master in 北京(supposed with high reputation) saying that Tai-chi skills could not execute in real fight ! His posted a question : " how does a tai-chi practitioner grab his opponent`s fast punch in action ? He also posted his silly demonstration on tai-chi pushing-hand. Let us revise the history that 杨露禅 with his 2 sons were so famous in 北京, by the time Wing-choon was no-where ! Wing-choon was well known only because of Bruce Lee. Lets come back to the technical point : how does a tai-chi practitioner grab the opponent`s hand ? When you are punched (say straight punch) by your opponent, of cause you could not grab his hand immediately, lets use slow shoots(慢镜头) : firstly, use outward coiling to deflect his punch just few inches away from his target (your body). Secondly, as his punch goes to the end (即:强弩之末) then there would be a pause(might be half a sec) at this moment you could grab his hand ! (not only his hand, sometimes even his whole body as he is out of balance then you may take advantage of his own falling momentum to sweep him with another hand side-way by movement of 带马归槽 ,Of cause, make sure the timing is correct !!!
