    Back in the day where joo never did any chops away from the table with his forehand. It made him so much better

    +Gustav Mårdby Idk. He lost a lot of points when he was back from the table had had to do a slow topspin loop. Now he gets those back with a heavy underspin, and is more consistent about it. He still attacks all the same balls that he attacked here, and plays very aggressively as a defensive player, but I think adding the forehand chop gave him another dimension. You still see him throw in some slow forehand loops to change it up from time to time, but more often than not waits until he has a higher percentage attack to break out that forehand attack

    That same year, Jan Ove Waldner had a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Joo Sae Hyuk. If you see the match, the way he handled Joo, you can observe why Waldner was a true Genius of Table Tennis and above these made in china machines.

    In fact Ma Lin was the only chinese player who had significant problems against defenders. I always had the impression that he didn't feel comfortable when he was forced to open the racket. That is why his topspins against heavy underspin looked quite awkward.

    Ma Lin has a long movement for his forehand-loop, that Takes so much energy. Also he cannot change the mode easily from slow to speedy spin and the reversed, which enables Yoo to find an efficient distance from the table, from where he can play his defensive game. You could expect more from Ma Lin but he gets tired because of his technique. Someone mentioned Waldner against Joo elsewhere in this thread, but Waldners game against choppers is a completely different thing.

    If Ma Lin had beaten Joo, he'd played against Schlager, and "slaughtered" him, but strangely enough Ma Lin has yet to win the WTTC, but has been so close so much, and also lost what should've been easy games.

    Schlager beat Kong Linghui and Wang Liqin in this tournament and Ma Lin himself in the subsequent team worldcup. I don't think that anyone could have managed to "slaughter" him in those times. Especially not a player who was strategically and tactically one-dimensional like Ma Lin.

    @@NoSpeechForTheDumb The team World Championship is best of 5 as opposed to best best of 7 format so it favors the weaker player.It was probably the only win over Ma Lin in God know's how many attempts (their first match was in 1996)so I think Ma Lin would have been the favorite.

  • @NoSpeechForTheDumb

    @@dickn.ormous1064 Ma Lin was often favorite in WTTCs and never managed. Besides being technically one-dimensional he struggled with his mentality. That's why he lost to Joo (and almost every other defender he ever met). Schlager on the other hand was mentally flawless in that tournament. Looking at how many match points he saved against Kong and Wang, it may be assumed that he was almost unbeatable at that instance.

  • @dickn.ormous1064

    @dickn.ormous1064

    @@NoSpeechForTheDumb Both Kong Linghui and Wang Liqin had average serve-receiving skills and exploitable bh. Ma Lin was a more difficult player against Europeans just ask Samsonov who had no chance whatsoever against him. His match up with JSH is irrelevant.Schlager himself was pretty useless against lefties losing to He Zhiwen at the WTTC in 2005,he was anything but multi-dimensional.As He Zhiwen said he played with many changes but had too many loopholes in his game. Ma's loses at the WTTC were against teammates who had the advantage of being familiar with his game,it's the same problem Waldner had against his teammates and hardly reflect the dynamics against foreign players.
