WTTA Great 38 The CW Switch Promo, 8/26/2023

With about a week until CW affiliates currently owned by CBS Television Stations disaffiliate from the network, which in Tampa is WTOG, the Nexstar-owned replacement affiliates in three of the markets (Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Tampa) have begun to promote the upcoming switchover, happening on Friday, September 1st. This was recorded on Tampa's soon-to-be CW O&O during overnight hours on Saturday, August 26, 2023.
All three of the stations are running this network-produced promo noting that "change is in the air" next Friday as these stations affiliate with Nexstar's newly reformatted CW, in time for its new fall lineup. CBS divested their stake in the network last year to Nexstar, and it was clear at that point CBS was moving away from the network to give their stations greater control over their programming, and it appears CBS is using most of the soon-to-be former CW affiliates for expanded news programs and a syndicated version of 48 Hours. However, Tampa is a standalone market with no CBS sister station, and it appears time will be filled with syndicated programming instead. It appears CBS is putting in minimal effort in the Atlanta, Seattle, and Tampa markets where CBS does not have a station to lean on for expanded news.
For Nexstar's end, WTTA is losing its primetime news block, which includes a Spanish-language newscast, to make way for The CW. It is unclear if this newscast will live on elsewhere or be 86ed altogether. There will be a WFLA-produced 10pm newscast though, which they are promoting.
Judging by this promo, WTTA will be keeping the Great 38 brand.

I know this isn’t exactly on topic, but you’d think Nexstar would work on eventually changing the name of the network, right? Granted, it isn’t the biggest deal in the world, but it’s a bit strange when the name of your network is an abbreviation of two companies that will, sooner or later, have nothing to do with the network anymore.

WPNT is almost certainly getting it (and apparently KOCB is losing it in exchange?). Seattle and Atlanta are rumored to be going to the TEGNA stations in those markets but not officially confirmed yet and could change.

@@Studio31MediaArchive Personally, I'm thinking that the Atlanta The CW affiliation could go to WPCH-TV. I'm also on board with the idea of KONG getting the Seattle The CW affiliation.

@@Studio31MediaArchive UPDATE: WPCH-TV is the new Atlanta affiliate, KOMO is getting the Seattle affiliation (no word if it's going to replace ABC on the main channel or be on a subchannel, though, reports have been unclear) and WPNT is the new Pittsburgh affiliate

I have some questions: When WTTA Tampa Bay switches affiliation to the CW, will they keep the Great 38 branding, because I went to logopedia and somebody just uploaded a logo of 'The CW Tampa Bay'? Will the MyNetworkTV affiliation be relegated to the subchannel? Also, it's probably going to take years for the Paramount-owned stations in Tampa Bay, Seattle-Tacoma, and Atlanta to gain the CBS affiliation because of contracts and stuff.

That logo is labeled "tentative" and appears to be fan-created. There appears to be no indication that Great 38 is being dropped. It's still all over the place on their with a week out. I am unsure where MyNet is going at this time for Tampa. I don't think Paramount is going to try and take CBS in the standalone CW markets. If anything, I foresee those three stations being sold at some point to other parties. Paramount puts the least amount of effort possible in those three markets and it shows.

@@Studio31MediaArchive I think they should keep the Great 38 name, even if they want to change the logo. Rebranding to The CW Tampa Bay sounds like both a downgrade and a genericization. As for the tentative logo, I may sound like an intermediate graphic designer, but the logo doesn't seem to look right, since it looks like the text is off centre. It should have been smaller like some of the CW logos. And I think what you said about Paramount-owned TV stations might be a possibility. It can be either the fact that Paramount is tired of waiting too long for the affiliation contract of existing CBS affiliates to expire, or some of those stations might be too valuable to lose CBS affiliation, especially WANF Atlanta, which was the flagship property of Gray Television, which was based in the city that TV station is based in.

The MyNetworkTV affiliation will still be on WTTA just as a secondary affiliation on the channel airing later from 1-3 am.

I saw that "The CW Tampa Bay" logo on the air today, so it could be legit. With WTTA becoming a CW O&O, I guess a branding change was coming. As for CBS changing stations here in the Tampa Bay DMA, I wouldn't count on WTOG, which will revert to independent status soon after I type this, becoming a CBS affiliate. I'm not sure that WTOG has the infrastructure for that kind of affiliation change in a market this big. Also, KIRO 7's owner, Cox, signed a multi-year group deal with CBS in 2020, so CBS isn't going anywhere in the Seattle/Tacoma DMA for a good while.
