Nitinol, also known as memory metal. In this experiment I bent the metal in to a completely different shape and when I drop it in hot water the atoms re align to there original position. Very cool! People use this material for magic tricks to hack spoons so the bend bend.

Make your car out of it. Then, if you get into a crash, it will straighten itself out!

I actually saw on tv a few years ago were they demonstrated on a car with this type of material that had a big ol dent and they just threw a bucket of hot water and went back to normal. I was like $#@!...science.

Ok I'm a little tired of the "this is fake " comments on this video. As stated in the video the paperclip is made from NITONOL, maybe you had the sound turned down..?? please.... simply search on youtube about Nitonol. You will understand. The video is not reversed or edited... that's why I added the timer.

@casualbird7671

***** They would indeed, but not from car damage. This stuff is very expensive to make, and would cost car companies a fortune to cover cars in. Not to mention you would still have to re-paint your car if you hit something. And nitinol is very weak at low temperatures, so unless you live in a very warn climate, this stuff will warp more than aluminum foil.

A paperclip like this almost crossed my desk, but I nabbed it, because it looks different. Now I am glad I kept it, can't wait to try it out!!
This metal + knife = AUTO SHARPEN!!! Sadly this looks like the metal isn't hard at all and the blade would most likely be scratched apart by trying to cut paper. :P

Omg that is the coolest thing I've ever seen!! GREAT VIDEOS
It could work with my headphones ...
Can you make a slinky out of nitinol?
I wonder about one Ideea and problem about it. Nitinol has a good strengh (when comes back from deformation to memory shape) but if i would like to build a engine based on cycles of deformation and back to memory shape in system of changing temperatures below and over memory shape activation. If it would be a eficient? I know some sciencist tried this system and created a powerful generator based on circulation of nitinol spring belt betwen hot and cold water. Think is how much energy they needed to sustain constant temperature difference betwen both temperature suplies (water in this case)
I'm a science teacher and this will work great in my lessons- thanks!

This begs the question, why isn't this metal used in more products to correct any flaws that might occur. If you increase the mass is it harder to correct itself. Would you use hotter water or does it matter.
If you look up you'll find that there's a way for you to "program" a new form. It's pretty cool.

how does the metal know which shape it was in? I mean I can shape it many times, how the metal chose which shape it want? Before it was a paperclip, it was in another shape... right?
very innovative and useful
Where can I buy this amazing stuff
where do you get those paperclips!!!! I want one so bad
What happens if a car is made from this memory metal and it hits a wall, can u put it in hot water and will it go to its original state?
This is awesome.
Is it a bad idea to make cars out of this then you can just put the car part that is dented in hot water then it will be fixed? Good idea or bad?
Where did you get the paper clips out of Nikon
they could make nitinol power plants. like a massive amount of nitinol that when it moves, well that would produce a huge amount of force and make elecricity. wouldnt take much to heat that water. seems like it could be done somehow
Why do you start the timer before you drop the paper clip in the liquid?
where did you get that kind of paperclip
This is cool!
it's all about the density of the martial , the paper clip density wasn't high , when you compare it with a cars metal , it's still hard , anyway it's true it can work if the tempreture of the water is directly proportional with the metal's density
Hey, if your younger sibling messes up all the paper clips, drop them in hot water xD
Would it work with a knot in it? That would be sick!!!
Woah! So cool!!
This should be the new asmr
do you put hot water or cold water
Knight and all is pretty cool stuff.
I learnt about this in a nanotechnology class, the metal is covered in heat sensitive nano-particles! Pretty interesting.
what happens if you tie it in knot?
when your iPhone breaks, but this is what the screens made of
How many times you can bend the clip?
that is wicked cool
It would very interesting to see what would happen if when u wound the Nitinol around the Pencil. If u left it on the Pencil while it is dropped into the water!. Cos Nitinol apparently reshapes at 50 pound per sq inch! If that’s the case the Pencil would break into several pieces, but it would be good to see it happen, also experiments with it wound round harder things to see what it would bend or break!
Curious to see what happens if you tie it into a knot...
Where do you get those paper clips
no, it's not how magicians bend spoons! they just use the spoons in my cafeteria ha
Any idea where to get Nitonal paper clips?
Hey, I've been trying to find a provider for Nitinol but I can't get a good one. Can you help me? Where did you get yours.
My brain hurts. So cool!
UFO from Roswell was covered in a memory metal. Paper thin. Didn't need heat to return to original shape.
Where can I get those paper clips
OMG THAT IS awesome!
Guy: like a good neighbor, State Farm is there! Other guy: pfft! Throws hot water on his car and it repaid instantly.* Guy: Actually, I'll have what he's having.
Is it possible to bend it under water?
Hey where can I buy this?
What if you cut it in half?
I am not sure what to expect.😊💣mindblown
You can use this to create artificial muscles too! If you run enough current through it, it heats up, meaning if you forged it right you can make it contract like a muscle fiber!
oh but that was so cool!
Rest able paperclips for fidgeting with I CAN DIE HAPPY.
That's sick
Does it work on colorful paper clips?
Where can you buy this from
Where can we buy nitinol?
Where'd you get that
