Nitinol, also known as memory metal. In this experiment I bent the metal in to a completely different shape and when I drop it in hot water the atoms re align to there original position. Very cool! People use this material for magic tricks to hack spoons so the bend bend.

Ok I'm a little tired of the "this is fake " comments on this video. As stated in the video the paperclip is made from NITONOL, maybe you had the sound turned down..?? please.... simply search on youtube about Nitonol. You will understand. The video is not reversed or edited... that's why I added the timer.

***** They would indeed, but not from car damage. This stuff is very expensive to make, and would cost car companies a fortune to cover cars in. Not to mention you would still have to re-paint your car if you hit something. And nitinol is very weak at low temperatures, so unless you live in a very warn climate, this stuff will warp more than aluminum foil.

I wonder about one Ideea and problem about it. Nitinol has a good strengh (when comes back from deformation to memory shape) but if i would like to build a engine based on cycles of deformation and back to memory shape in system of changing temperatures below and over memory shape activation. If it would be a eficient? I know some sciencist tried this system and created a powerful generator based on circulation of nitinol spring belt betwen hot and cold water. Think is how much energy they needed to sustain constant temperature difference betwen both temperature suplies (water in this case)

It would very interesting to see what would happen if when u wound the Nitinol around the Pencil. If u left it on the Pencil while it is dropped into the water!. Cos Nitinol apparently reshapes at 50 pound per sq inch! If that’s the case the Pencil would break into several pieces, but it would be good to see it happen, also experiments with it wound round harder things to see what it would bend or break!
