A 2022/2023 review of Hell Let Loose by RedcoatViking - A leading expert in the field of Hell Let loose research and shinanigans.
Have you ever heard of a game called Hell Let Loose? Well I have, and I’ve played it for about a thousand hours, but this video’s for those people that don’t know what it is. Those few who are yet to experience this awesome team based shooter first hand in all its cinematic and bloody glory, where your ability to communicate effectively with your squad mates is just as important as your aim. A game that turns boys into men and women into hairier women, a game that started out as a niche indie fps and turned into one of the biggest, most successful shooters of all time, because today we’re gonna be answering 2 very important questions... What the fudge is Hell Let Loose, and is it worth playing as we go into 2023? Also I’m doing this review based on the PC version of the game but you can also get it on PS5 and XBOX and most of it should translate to the console versions as well. Let’s dive in!
So what is Hell Let Loose. Well despite what the name might suggest, it’s not a low budget version of DOOM and it doesn’t involve going to Hell or fighting any sort of demons, though to be honest that would be pretty cool.
No instead this game is a gritty, match based first person team-based shooter set during the second world war that’s all about recreating those epic, cinematic moments we’ve all seen in TV and movies like Saving Private Ryan and HBO’s Band of Brothers, where 100 players face off against each other in two teams of 50 with the goal of capturing all the enemy control points while successfully defending their own.
Players are divided into squads of up to 6 members, with each member playing one of several different classes, each with its own set of weapons and tools that you can use to give your team an edge during a match, and every squad has its own squad leader whose job it is to lead and assist squad members while coordinating with other squad leaders as well as the overall commander of the team to hopefully out manoeuvrer, out-gun and overwhelm the enemy defenses.
One of the strongest aspects of the game in my opinion is the gun play and overall pace of each match. The weapon handling feels accurate, the projectile damage is lethal and there’s no cross hair so you need to use your gun’s hard sights, and yet anyone with experience in other shooters can jump in and instantly feel at home with the handling of most weapons, while still being accessible and intuitive enough for players completely new to the genre to be able to get the hang of it fairly quickly.
Think of this game as like a more hardcore version of Battlefield V, with a careful blend of realism, fun and challenging gameplay that comes together to create a really immersive experience. If you’ve ever heard of a similar game called Post Scriptum, it’s like that, but with a simplified logistics system faster paced gameplay, basically like a cosy middle ground between Battlefield and Post Scriptum, with handy built-in mechanics that limit each team to only 2 snipers, and tanks being restricted to players in a tank squad so not every Tom, Dick and Harry can jump in one and start wreaking havoc...

@@jeddi209 It's my favorite shooter of all time and I've been playing consoles since 1992 so yes it's worth it. it takes time to learn, and is played 1000% the opposite of COD so take your time, engagements happen 100's of meters out, you HAVE to use a mic and play defense! It's super team orientated, watch some tutorial videos to better help understand the game it's not about K/D so throw that out the window
This game is perfect. No sliding, jumping around corners, drop shots, or any of that other nonsense. Like you said, it really has the perfect balance between realism and fun

@@LostHope84 Fun features? You mean the features that make those games ridiculously fast paced and have people look like they’re convulsing on screen from slide cancelling and other nonsense. All those “fun” features also completely negate any sort of tactical play from those games. You just have a bunch of people aimlessly sprinting all over a map, and gun fights come down to whoever can twitch faster and spam movement controls more. Sometimes your good aim doesn’t even matter, because the other guy has a sniper rifle, and even though you already started shooting him first, he just one shots you. It’s ridiculous. Gun fights in Hell Let Loose are so much more intense. The aiming takes more skill, but that’s not the only thing you need to be good at. You actually need to out think your enemies. If you get a group of enemies pinned behind a house or something, your machine gunner can lay suppressive fire to keep them pinned there, while the rest of the squad moves in to flank. If that squad can find your gunner quick enough and suppress them back, then they might be able to counterattack, or fall back to a better position. Maybe they could pop smokes and then move to a position where they can flank you. Maybe they don’t think of a plan fast enough and they all die and lose their outpost. The engagements are so dynamic in this game, and it’s a lot of fun. Not having all those movement features doesn’t make it bad, it makes it different. I think it’s different in a great way

Bro I specially buy the ps5 for this game, and after days of playing Hell let Loose (HHL) I don’t like playing other games anymore. So I hooked up with some American guys and play whit a hole group off people around the world and I wil never quit playing this game. With all the oncoming updates and things that they want to put in this game, makes it even better and funnier to play.

Nothing like seeing body parts of your squad members fly by you after getting hit with arty…. Or when you get shot in the head, you can’t be revived… love this game
For everyone on pc I’d recommend getting it through humble bundle, it is part of the humble choice for this month, and is bundled with a couple other games for only 12 bucks

What I love the most about this game is the gun play. Iron sights + each bullet being deadly like in COD2
i got bored of Battlefield (played 1942 up to BF V)but a few years back, started playing HLL instead. have played over 2000hrs and still love it. by far the best team based shooter i ever played. as you said, voice communication is critical. so if you want to play it to its full potential, make sure you have a microphone.
It's alot of fun with a fun squad. You get blown up alot and the fighting is pretty intense. I love it
This game is unforgiving, and it's not for everybody. Imo this game has everything I look for in a fps. It's glorious 🙌

I bought this and played one game. The game went on for about 2 hours. And it was the most intense and heart pumping shooter realism I've ever had tbe pleasure of playing. I've been waiting for this game. I think I found my home. I was initially disappointed squad wasn't on ps5. Then I played this. And I'm glad squad wasn't on there so I bought this. After one two hour game of fighting soldiers I only seen a few times I am sure thay this is my favorite shooter I've evrr played.
Bought it today for PS5. Looking forward to trying it out.

Just remember. At first all you will do is die and never know how. Then all you do is die and you’ll know why. And then it gets unbelievably good. Play as a team and listen to what other need. Communication is key. It’s so good. My wife keeps saying “you are obsessed with Hell Let Loose!” So I gave her the headset while I played. 5 minutes later she said “ok, I get it. That’s crazy”.

I like HLL a lot and love Squad and I sure would love to play Post-Scriptum but the playerbase is just making me steer clear. From a player's perspective is it active and is it worth the money?

@@Goofestball Post Scriptum is quite dead as in there’s no active support from it. The devs are funneling all their efforts into Squad and forgetting Post Scriptum.
Easily my fav MP game in the last decade. If you’re looking for a higher class of MP game deff give this game a shot.

Did you switch to wasd compuer controls? I was never able to use a typing keyboard as a game controller. It hurts my left hand. Why do people settle for this mode? I fully understand the mouse click for accuracy and sensitivity but the whole left hand shit is so primitive.
Hope they will add the Pacific Theatre as well, with Japan and China as additional factions and more maps like Shanghai, Guadalcanal, Saipan, Manila, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

alot of people dismiss COD as this kiddie pew pew pew monstrosity of an arcade game (and it is that now), but it was once PC only , and back then (COD + UO, COD2) on PC , COD could play like a tactical shooter. hardcore shooter, depending on the server settings. so it wasn't always arcadey. even though some people played it that way.

There are two types of players: the ones who understand the term "firepower", and the ones who got lost on the way to Battlefield/CoD
I have way too much of a skill issue to play this game. I have tried to play with my brother, and it just turns into me looking at the spawn screen punctuated by 30 or less seconds of cowering behind cover then dying from nowhere. Seems like it would be a lot of fun, but I suck so bad, I can't enjoy it.
This video convinced me to spend 40$ and get it im mad I didn't get it earlier. Is there any mod community in this or is it dedicated servers only?

It is true yeah :) Squad is a nightmare, whoever told you that just lied, it's got one of the most toxic communities after Rocket League lol
Only have 60 hours but one of the best games I have ever played. Arma fan here too! Couple of things I don't like is the players constantly spraying ammo with the tank and blindly shooting and just cheating to me. Spawn killing is another issue sometimes. Being dependent on everyone playing a role I'm not a fan of either, I just want to go in and play the game not worry about supplies, garritsons, etc. Sadly Arma Reforger is following this and just not a fan. I bought this game, Post Scriptum, Squad, and the Beyond the Wire and asked for a refund on them all but Hell Let Loose. Over all the graphics and game play are great! Just expect to die a lot as you most likely will!
I havent played this game or squad but in your video I believe you didnt have any other game close enough to compare it to..do you consider squad close to it?

There's no AI or training mode, but the community is very friendly and there's new players around everywhere so just jump in and you'll pick it up pretty quickly :) Just ask your squad mates if you need help figuring something out.

Looks like a faster paced "Squad" that isn't as strategic and which you can play at more than 20 fps. I came across this game because of humble bundle and I wish they had bundled it sooner because I've been looking for a game like ever since I first played "Squad" two years ago.

I'd say the main difference is they are both entirely different experiences. Arma aims for full on simulator and reforger is more or less a stepping stone towards Arma 4 and has its fair share of bugs since it's still being developed, whereas Hell Let Loose is a slightly more tactical and hardcore version of Battlefield that's more casual and accessible than Arma, but not so light that you end up back at Call of Duty. You can't really choose between the 2 since they do literally everything differently and target entirely different audiences. I'd say get both and refund one of them if you don't like it.

You can do that in he'll let loose too play an engineer and have an officer in your team on Mic so he can ask the commander to give you supply truck
Great WW2 game with realistic wound damage (one round=death). Not another MW Cod game.
Public matches depend highly on the quality of your commander
Do you actually play the game without player tags enabled or do you just toggle them off to put together some more aesthetically pleasing footage for youtube videos? Playing without them in real time must be savage difficult.

I don't change anything for my videos, but I do have tags on, just with the Nameplate Occlusion setting turned on so I don't see tags that get blocked by walls/hills etc, as I feel like the hud gets too cluttered.
kills doesnt mean to much in this game, if you are trash in shooting you can play arty,tank or you can build 1 set of nodes and then garrisons (200mx200m) around attacking or defending point and trust me, your commander and other players gonna love it (you must be squad leader for build garrisons and need 100supplies in redzone and 50supplies in blue zone)

Kill count doesn't mean much, that much is true, but your ability to keep yourself alive in a gunfight does.
I am a BF paratrooper we might say. As did the DICE took the downfall on their heads , HellLetLoose came in and saved the day. Playing for almost a year and can't think of any fps i might start playing just because HLL ticks all the boxes i need. Big plus, developers briefings and clear development road map without any unneccesary "gameplay improvements" pushed forcily onto us.

Great game
one of the biggest most successful shooters of all time? i love this game but are we sure haha
HLL is not about the shooting and big explosion... winning a game is about carefully planned maneuvers, and map control. There is a reason why HLL can be a walking simulator at times. Because tried and true military tactics works so well in this game. Flanking maneuvers, disrupting enemy logistics from deep behind enemy lines, to playing as your teams logistics by building supplies and forts. Yes, other mechanics are simplified compared to SQUAD or Post Scriptum, but the gameplay can be as gritty as PS... The thing that makes HLL and PS different in the gameplay is that both casual and milsim players can enjoy the game... If you enjoy the shooting aspect, HLL can offer that, and if you enjoy stategic gameplay, HLL can offer that as well.

You're not wrong, but why bother arguing over semantics? The game is a cinematic experience, so yes, the shooty shooty and the big boom booms take priority over realism in the game design. That's why each side gets 3 massive howitzers to back up a tiny band of 50 soldiers. For cinematic effect :P You could argue that "true military tactics" work well in Battlefield 4 as well, but really, what's the point? 👀

Its a love hate relationship with this game for me. I put in 300hrs in this game and i still average about 8 kills a round. But its an amazing game.

No, that exists as Post Scriptum. Hell Let Loose is like Hardcore Battlefield with light tactical squad play.
@IGN When they said you can pretty much ignore the core game play and just have fun, no. You need to communicate. You need to push enemy outposts WHILE pushing forward and deploying more. They missed the whole point of the game in one sentence... it's Battlefield V with realism instead if straight chaos and map rotations. I seriously wonder who hires the "journalists" who review games. They have zero clue of what any game is seriously about and compare to AAA all the time and just miss so much, I can do better just by playing for them, then having a conversation with a journalist, and have then write my experience. It would make so much moree sense with an actual immersion perception. 4:50 mark in video is completely wrong

@@RedcoatViking_Official Looks dulled down and a arcadey shooter like battlefield mixed with elements of squad. In essence a gateway game into more intense military simulator games like Squad. Also squad can be tons of fun when you play with friends who explain the game to you & you’re all in the same squad.
One of the best MILSIM games you can get. I can't wait for a mortar squad
It's a great game but the fact you can only fight other human players is a real shame to me and why I haven't bought it. Sometimes you just want to have fun against bots and chill. It's the reason I still prefer Red Orchestra 2 to HLL, even if RO2 is old it's a great game and the AI on the highest difficulty definitely holds up and is still a blast to play. I appreciate the attention to detail and realism as someone that's always been nerdy about WWII stuff. As good of a game as Hell Let Loose is I really don't appreciate that most modern FPS games only seem to care about PVP and assume nobody want's to do anything besides PVP when many people as well as myself would legitimately appreciate a single player bot mode. We don't care about campaign we just want to shoot the computer. Make some basic AI pathing and scripting for the existing maps and be done with it. I don't see how that's too much to ask on a game that is extremely tactical and realistic because at the very least it can help new players learn the basic mechanics of shooting, positioning, classes and overall gameplay even if some of the more advanced squad level and human powered functions weren't available. This would prevent the inevitable non fun experience of dying to players 10X more experienced than you repeatedly while you're a beginner for tens of hours as you try to learn the games brutal learning curve. That's not fun for anybody and especially not for me. There will always be a learning curve when you are a beginner in the PVP in any game but an offline mode with even remotely competent AI can shorten that learning curve for almost anyone, I'll use CS:GO for an example, I'm not great at CS:GO but the offline with bots mode in that game made me insanely better than I ever was before when I just launched the game for the first time and loaded up PVP right away. Just something to think about.

I wish I could refund this game on pc. 65 hours in and Dying over and over from across the map is not fun. You can’t see the enemy but everyone can see you for some damn reason.

"You can't see the enemy, but everyone can see you" - The answer is in there somewhere! :P You need to move with purpose from cover to cover. Know where you are going, and why you're going there (and if it's worth it), before leaving your current cover. Don't try to out-gun your opponents, out-smart them instead. Hit them from angles where they least expect it, and consider your shots before just firing away and drawing attention to yourself and those around you. There are lots of ways to improve, and constantly dying is a common but easily fixed issue. Check around for some guides on either my channel or videos from Monoespacial, Terrydactyl or SoulSniper
Bought it, downloaded it, deleted it within 3 weeks... Honestly this game mode not my style, probably not yours either - save yourself £39

The Community is not friendly and helpfull. Ive seen more people rage over new players and talk shit to them then players help new players to get a grip of the mechanics... What is a big point why this Game will slowly die, sadly.

Love this game.. however my only complaint is how there is clans out there who use data sheets to see were the control points will spawn and get a air head right on point behind enemy lines because of them cheating... and yet this is considered ok and competitive 🤔... still cheating and not a skilful win imo.
I wish you could build fox holes for yourself wherever you may be.

Several points in this video 2:06,8:12 etc are terrible looking. Either your cheating or your capture is terrible because you can't even see the enemy yet you shoot them. You can barely make out the one at 8:12 at least from the video

Battlefield 2042 was considered a colossal train wreck and even that game has 9k daily players on steam. You sure your opinion isn't just biased and can't accept this game flopped and rightfully so? Just looks like an indie version of Battlefield 5 that's strictly worse.
