I'd say there are multiple reasons why that particular version of the Day Date hasn't blown up and probably never will. 1. 99% of Day Date buyers want the entire package - Presidential bracelet included. 2. If your considering a 36mm it's probably because you like the more modest vintage inspired look. Then you are better off buying an 1803, 18038 or 18238 since the brushed lugs are so much more attractive and are not as ostentatious and blingy as the later references. 3. If the blingyness of the newer Day Date references appeal to you, you're most likely the type of person that'd rather have the 40mm version. In my opinion, the only reason why anyone would buy a Day Date 118xxx reference or later, over an older reference, is because of the updated bracelet where you get solid links and ceramic sleeves. Since you don't get a bracelet with your particular Day Date that's kind of a moot point.

Can’t talk about that Seawolf without mentioning the stunning neon minty green triangle at the 24-hour mark on the bezel - it just POPS! against the bakelite bezel

I’m usually not a big fan of the Rolex green, but I kinda like this watch with the green dial on the green leather.

I can’t stand the Daytona in YG. I am a huge Daytona fan in steel (my daily 116500) actually had the 126500 as well, got rid of it. I do like it in plat also, but to me any sports watch in precious metals is a pimp watch.

Beautiful watch, and a great find. Congrats. Has this dial been brought back in the 2024 Day-Date release (yellow gold green ombre dial) ? Look similar I do love it on a strap though, colorful but tones down the full gold a little....this era feels like the Day-Date equivalent of the Daytona Beach

The reason the day spelled out on the day date is better is because it works better with the mind. On many seiko watches it will say “SAT” we don’t speak or think that way we think and say “SATURDAY”. It’s easier on the mind 😊

Your advice on doing your due diligence and not waiting for someone else to tell you to like something applies equally to any long-term investment as well. 🔥

I’m in the same boat I’m about to pull the trigger on a day date 40 I’m not sure what to buy I love ever rose so I’m torn between the olive or the isenkiesel and the only yellow I like is the green or the onyx I believe those will be the keepers for the long term

Yellow gold is fine for evening wear. It’s just too loud for daywear unless you live in Dubai or Monaco, for example.

Call me silly but I love the presidential branchlet way more than the case. If Rolex made precious metal presidential branchlets with a Rolex emblem on top without the watch as silly as it sounds, I would rock it!

36mm white dial DayDate is the only Rolex I want, I believe this is one of their most versatile pieces. Dress it up or with a T-shirt and jeans, absolutely timeless.

Totally agree that vintage = value. There is a whole nested set of levels at which this maxim operates, however, depending on brand status. What people new to watches don't realise is that brand status and visibility in the vintage era wasn't always aligned with how we see the same brands today. This means that there is *spectacular* value in vintage watches from brands such as Longines, Girard Perregaux etc, even Japanese market Seiko. Watches that were really high quality, truly innovative and in every way the equal of Rolex when they were made (even using dials made in the same factories, for example). My own collecting focusses on such watches from the late 60s and early 70s, and I've just started a blog (called Moonage watches).

Back in the days when you could actually walk into an AD I was in Bucherer in Vienna and they had both of these in the cabinet and for me, the DD was the one I would have chosen and I loved the shade of green both on the dial and strap. The Daytona green for me was a bit uncouth.

That day date is gorgeous. Is so true new watches are not as special as those oldies. I have a 16800 sub that absolutely love more every day.

My next purchase will be a 118239 Cherry Dial, so please don't mention this watch too much just yet :D

Agreed. I've always felt that a platinum daydate would be my retirement piece, when I'm in my 60's

I feel like the yellow gold and the green face roman numeral day date would be a better comparison

Rolex used to offer leather straps. I think that they could make a comeback and offer bracelet and an appropriate leather strap. Cartier does it and we love it.

The John Mayer skyrocketed because of the Daytona hype. it’s the only Daytona with the green dial . Day dates have always been easy to obtain because you can go back 50 years and get one.

Trouble is that they are just a little ostentatious and arriviste. Scrap metal dealer that hit the big time kind of watch. Doesn’t take away from the fact that some of them are quite attractive.

Well… People do save up money to buy the Rolex that they’re dreaming of… But Rolex wants them to buy a couple of cheaper models to show that they are members of the stupid faithful. You know it’s easier to buy an indulgence from the church. Even if you have to invent a time machine to get one. In other words… You do have to feel sorry for the people who suck up to Rolex… Even though they apparently make a very fine product.
