WTF Happened to STEVEN SEAGAL?
Ойын-сауық
WTF Happened To This Celebrity? - The JoBlo series that examines the careers of stars and filmmakers who may have fallen out of the spotlight, and tells where they are now!
With hits like ABOVE THE LAW, HARD TO KILL and UNDER SIEGE, Steven Seagal punched and shot and flipped his way to becoming an A-list Hollywood action star in the early 1990s. But over the 2000s, he had taken his trademark ponytail and martial arts skills to a seemingly endless stream of direct-to-video movies. We’ll try not to snap too many bones as we catch up with WTF Happened to Steven Seagal!

I do love the Seagal Aikido clothesline.
You left out a great story. Apparently at a party at Stallones place, Sly tried to set up a fight between Jean Claude Van Damme and Steven, because Steven had been publicly trashing JCVD. He brought both men outside, JVCD was ready to throw down right there (because he has a very impressive *actual* fight record and Steven is a track record against Aikido sycophants) and Steven made up a bullshit excuse and immediately left. lol.
@deerlord2363

It was Van Damme who challenged Seagal after getting tired of his bullshit. Seagal left Stallone's house and went to a nightclub, Van Damme tracked him down to challenged him again, but Seagal had previously paid the bouncer to let him know if Van Damme showed up at the nightclub so he could disappeared before Van Damme confronted him.

@slckb0y65

well tbh, they don't really hit each other, but the stunt they pull while being built like freakin' fridges is no small feat. same goes for the lucha libre or japanese wrestling, the kind of stunts those guys pull right in front of the audience are freakin' impressive. they'll be the first to say they are entertainers, but that being said i think some of them would hold their own against a martial artist or better yet in a street fight. also it's far more dangerous than one would think, many broke their neck on a wrestling ring. so as fake as the fights themselve are, the performers themselve still deserve respect imho.

He had a really good run. He had a string of awesome movies. He was that next tough guy in the movies, the next martial arts actor. At some point, it loses its originality. This documentary attempted to play both ends but was mostly aimed at attacking Seagal. Some of the movies the lib narrator attempted to ridicule were really good movies. On Deadly Ground, Under Siege, Under Siege 2, all good movies. Fire Down Below, yeah, Steven Seagal doesn’t exactly have stage presence or the guitar guy image. But he plays, awkward-looking but who cares? And was another good movie. He’s had a successful career. As for being buddies with Putin? Supporting Trump? Good! He’s not a propaganda freak and dumb liberal. He’s not some transgender. That’s someone who’s be in Biden and Obama’s circle. It why go to Russia in 2016 and miss out on Americas last few years of a traditional America? Besides, I don’t care what people’s personal experiences with him were. He had some kick ass movies!

It would be a 2 hour long explosion that started in the opening credits and kept going until the end. The 3D version would be a huge hit with today's audience.

I tried "watching" some of his recent movies. It's bizarre how he does action now. Often, he's billed as the main character when its usually a younger actor who is doing a majority the aggressive choreography work. In most scenes, he sits down. And the camera uses badly edited close shots of him doing kung fu strikes instead of the aikido he was known for.

Honestly, if Steven had just retired in the late 90s, early 2000s, he would have been more well received. Instead he gains a bunch of weight (and ego) while barely upping his acting skill, so now he's basically a meme

I love how every episode, in spite of any actions done on and off the set, you still have a sense of sympathy, hope, or respect for the actor. And then there is this episode, with its complete dearth of all these wonderful nuances. Well done, sir.

You forgot to mention that Exit Wounds has the greatest Seagal moment in history when he stands up at the anger management workshop and says "You see this face? This is a happy face." To this day I want to know if this was an intentional joke about Seagal's acting chops, because iif it was, t would mean that Seagal himself was the only one who wasn't in on it, and I can't quite put into words how much I love that idea.
We need to call John Wick right now Steven Seagal cannot get away with this.

I never really bought it, especially because of his strange "stiff" acting that Steven used in every single one of his movies. If you thought that his persona was badass even then, there's probably something wrong with you for sure. There was nothing interesting in his repetitive, mediocre-at-best action movies and his arrogant and egoistic character. At least it fit the Hollywood I guess which isn't a flex but Steven is one of the examples how corrupted that movie industry is
Imagine if Segal got picked for playing the role of Predator and seeing his huge gut in the suit 🤣
