Forgotten TV show? I would like you to cover the crime series," Crime Story." Another great but short-lived NBC show.

Just realised SeaQuest DSV is actually super-niche to a specific cohort of us 90s kids. I don't recall it getting reruns, or any big HD release or streaming. We happy few who watched it at the time are all who are commenting on this great video. Thanks for treating us.

It had the same exact time slot as Lois and Clark The Adventures of Superman. I remember this very well as I wanted to watch both shows back in the day. Sea quest won out, but when it ended I caught up Lois and Clark. I think most kids chose Lois and Clark over it as sci fi shows weren’t widely embraced at the time and were put in the nerd category by many back then. I think Star Wars was the only sci fi property at that time that broke through that nerd barrier in the 90s and that was it.

I was 18 in 1993 in my first year of Uni, and watched the show mostly because there was a utter dearth of science-fiction content where I lived at the time. Most weeks I found it a pretty awful TNG rip-off, but the excellent core cast and the occasional decent story, along with the aforementioned lack of options, kept me watching right through the run, and I was disappointed when it was cancelled.

I was an extra on Seaquest Season 2. Got to meet most of the cast. Jonathan Brandis didn’t come out of his trailer much. Darwin was a puppet which made me sad. We hung out in the Maglev much of the time playing cards. Roy Scheider and Ted Rami were awesome to us extras. I got to stand in for Ed Kerr. Overall an awesome experience I will never forget.

I never pushed my son into Hollywood,we'd go see some sets of music videos (via a friend of mine) but I always encourage my son to stick to academics,sucks that there's parents out here so greedy. Same thing happen to Maucauly Culkin, however he was smart enough to invest some of his earnings when he emancipated from his Dad.

Johnathan Brandis was a child actor in a time when the industry thought of them as disposable or instantly replaceable, he needed help, His parents saw he was struggling and tried to get him into therapy but in the end his illness got the better of him. Child actors are checked and monitored and not overworked because of what happened to him and others in the 80's onwards. RIP Jonathan Brandis

Sad that it took ruining lives, but I am glad we are getting better about treating child actors. Though I suppose someone of judy Garland's situation would have looked to Brandis with envy. Funny how much of a monster hollywood is.

mistywolf: Very informative and nicely said. I remember him helping one of the 'Never Ending Story' sequels to succeed even without all of the original characters.

I absolutely adored seaQuest. It was the reason I decided, when I was 6, that I wanted to be a marine biologist. Which is exactly what I became. Jonathan Brandis was my favourite and Ted Raimi was my sisters favourite.

@@volkhen0 It seemed like such a big show at the time, however now if it comes up most people have no idea what show I'm speaking of. Either way, it was important to me and I loved doing the motion graphics on the show and hanging out at the Derby with Ted Raimi. Ahhh things that don't happen in Montreal.😏

This series was literally life changing for me. I started a company with the sole purpose of building manned underwater habitats and credit SeaQuest during my high school years for spurring my creativity.

"Nothing remotely close"? 🤨 James Cameron went to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in 2012. We have cell-phones and drones and fancy nuclear submarines and CRISPR. I assume by we don't have what they show, you mean the aliens, and Perseverance just got to Mars last week, so it might not be long…

@@user-vn7ce5ig1z Yeah really, the big difference is just that if we were running low on resources in real-life, we wouldn't be wasting them to build cities under the ocean. It's about as sensible as the characters in the Mad Max world blowing through their gasoline like it's in limitless supply. (I suppose that's an analogue to us doing the exact same thing)

What I also loved about the show were the extras at the end of the episodes. Explaining certain topics in regards of the ocean, world or wildlife.

I thought the show was more like "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea: The Next Generation."

I really liked the first season of SeaQuest. Problem is, that the studio made it into a completely different story in the second season, and yet another different story in the third season. the only thing they had in common was the title "SeaQuest" and the idea of undersea adventures. They had a good thing going in the first season, but quickly proceeded to destroy it. Which was entirely typical of how most TV studios operated in that time period. If you saw a show that was great in it's first season, you could bet that it would be either cancelled, or completely different in the it's second season, with different actors and a different story. The studios did this same thing with with umpteen new shows, especially shows that had a sci-fi or fantasy background. I remember it getting so bad that most people would not watch new tv shows just for that reason. SeaQuest was a victim of bad handling in just about everything. And it's a dammed shame as the first season had a lot going for it and a huge potential. Chalk it up with studio executives who could not recognize a good thing when they saw it.

Yeah, I'm not sure at what point it turned, but as I recall by the time Micheal Ironside was running the ship, it had been reduced to basically Star Trek underwater, doing schlocky and cliche sci-fi tropes instead of interesting stories. I mean, FFS, towards the end they had aliens, time travel, and the literal god Poseidon.

@Michael Meyer From what I understand Brandis's mental state had a lot to do with being raped repeatedly by Brian Singer. That was the deal those boys and their parents made, be raped by Singer and become superstars. It is fucking tragic.

Don't blame "Hollywood". Brandis was just a cog in machine. A fan base like his disappears just as quick as it comes, in favour of the next flavour of the month. And if you're not a big draw anymore, why cast him as a lead? That's not to say it's an easy transition. It might have been a good career move to focus more on off-camera work.

I'm so happy to see this. I still watch this on DVD on occasion, and Jonathan Brandis was my first crush. I was devastated when he died.

I loved Ted Rami's character. He was smart enough to not be "The Professor" and solve all the problems, he wasn't a pretty face or muscle man, and he was perfectly human. My favorite was the episode "Bad Water" with a French tourist sub firm and missing where O'Neill's attempting to contact the French sub in French turns to Bridger and starts to answer to Bridger in French, realizes from the look he gets "Wrong language" and then restarts in English. Perfect role-model for a teenage boy.

I loved watching this show in the 90's. Now, many of my younger friends, nieces, and nephews don't even believe me that such a show existed :-)

Something something Superman: The New Adventures of Lois and Clark

I really thought the first season was more influenced by Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, rather than Star Trek. And you are right, Michael Ironside brought a breath of fresh air to the series. Too bad it didn't work.

I remember SeaQuest DSV. I watched it as a kid. SeaQuest DSV was Star Trek but set underwater. Jonathan Brandis was one of my favourite actors and I was shocked when I read in a magazine that he committed suicide in 2003. He was a good young actor and he could had gone on to do bigger and better roles. I met Ted Raimi in 2016. I talked to him about working with Lucy Lawless in Xena: Warrior Princess and he said it was horrible. I was 9 when SeaQuest DSV first aired in 1993 and I was 34 in 2018 which the series took place. SeaQuest DSV was one of the best sci-fi shows of the 1990s and we'll never have a show like SeaQuest DSV again. Rest in Peace Roy Schneider (1932 - 2008) Jonathan Brandis (1976 - 2003) and Royce D. Applegate (1939 - 2003).

Losing Johnathan Brandis was a terrible loss. A beautiful soul, It's hard to believe he took his own life. Tragic. Hollywood and child stardom do not mix, movie history is lased with the bodies of former child stars who reached their potential long before their time. He had so much to be proud of and had a wonderful legacy. He was directed by Spielberg, Ang Lee and acted alongside Harvey Keitel as well as appearing in the classic "IT". If only someone could have told him how he had everything to live for.

The expression isn't "no matter how bad things may seem this too shall pass", it's just "this too shall pass" because it's not only about comfort in times of adversity. Most people forget the other half of it. It's also meant for good times, to remind you to not take them for granted because they won't last (also just a reminder in general that life won't last and so make the most of it). It's very versatile.

When you reach a sadness like that… I’m not sure being told that your work is something to continue to live for. It might of just made him more miserable. Plus on a lighter side of things, ladybugs and never ending story two alone are good reasons to kil yourself.

I was today years old when I learned that Darwin was a puppet. I even have his "autograph" 😭 But seriously, LOVED this show as a kid. And, yes, I was a fan of Brandis but I stayed for the story and characters. Inspired my imagination and I truly hope (in this time of 'reboots') that we do end up with something new.

You should do a video about, "SPACE: Above and Beyond". Was a pretty decent show that came out around same time frame as this show, if memory serves me correctly.

Came out just after X Files. It had the same writers and as a reward for the success of X Files they got their own original show. I loved this and was heartbroken that it only got 1 season. It was one of the best things on TV at the time.

Yeah, I remember this one. It's quite dark space sci-fi. Sure, we have the likes of BSG, Discovery, Killjoys, The Expanse, etc now. But back then? SPACE: Above and Beyond was quite a memorable show for me. Too bad only one season lasted and the cliffhanger ending remains left unfulfilled.

It's a shame about Brandis. If he had hung in there, you got to think he would've at least had a career renaissance like Wil Wheaton or Alfonso Ribiero did once the nostalgia kicked in.

He was hoping for a comeback with the film, "Hart's War". There were a LOT of big names in that film and it could have made the difference. His role was largely deleted from the film and he felt like that was his last chance. Of course, ever since he died there have been rumors it wasn't suicide.

It's such a tragedy about Johnathan Brandis. He was such a bright shinning star with so much talent. He had the potential to live up to great things. It's really sad his light was dimmed way too soon and everyone was shorted from his talent he could have given. Loved him as an actor he reminded me of my childhood best friend.

Iconic. All the characters, the look and feel, the fact it made 12-year-old me get over that it wasn't set in space. I'm sure video games today use shows like this as a base on which to think up RPG stories and situations.

It's such a shame this show got screwed around as much as it did. This show was huge for prime time viewing. And yeah, Stacey Haiduk was hot as all hell. Those eyes, among her other assets, were amazing. Plus I'm glad you addressed Michael Ironside by his full appropriate title. His character felt like a ring in for a leaving cast member (which it was) but he gave something different and damn was he good. He's earned some mad respect.

A sad fact, Jonathan Brandis was supposed to have this big comeback in some movie, in which he put all his work and hopes on to revive his career, only for the movie's deleted scenes to be exactly the ones he was on. I believe that could be what really drove him over the edge. Rest in peace.

I loved the first season very much. I loved the little interesting science bits that were explained after the episodes and I loved that it was grounded in science. Jonathan Brandis was also my very first crush :-). I think what alienated a lot of people, myself included, was the loss of most of the crew after season 1. I saw only a few episodes of season 2 before calling it quits.

When I was a teenager, I used to love watching this show, along with Sliders. It certainly was a different time, 20 something years ago. Those were pretty good shows back then along with Firefly and Dark Angel. Kind of miss those shows. That's funny, I just seen him wearing that Marlins t-shirt and they had just won the World Series. Now I remember why I liked it so much because I live in Florida and we used to go to a lot of Marlins baseball games back then, when they played in Joe Robbie Stadium where the Miami dolphins play, now it's called Hard Rock Stadium and the Marlins have their own stadium now. Ahh memories....

You missed a cast member of the first season. Bob Ballard. At the end of the episodes, he would appear and explain the real world science used in the episodes. SeaQuest had one and a half more seasons than Earth 2 which had premiered the same night (and which a lot of people thought was just as good) as SeaQuest. Earth 2 just didn't have Spielberg backing it up.

Dude! As someone who watched Flipper reruns on Nickelodean, I had no idea that was a puppet. Mind blown. Even with the mistakes, wow.

As someone that had an extremely small part in the show, I think it could easily be recreated today. That one man shark sub, I've seen a company makes those for real now. At the time I was impressed by the level of detail of the props dept. My part was being in the company contracted to do all the embroidery for the last half of season 2 on. Every patch, every uniform. It was a blast trying to figure out what was going to happen every time there was a new crew member name or faction logo. Costuming gave us some of what they knew but given that they didn't know everything and the scattered plot lines, we seldom had a clue. The work was always a rush job, but it was fun wile it lasted. Oh and personality I was always partial to Lt. Henderson (Kathy Evison).

When I was a kid it was a voyage to the bottom of the Sea. There had been nothing like it until seaQuest.... I always loved the deep Sea adventure genre.

Went from grudgingly watching it wishing it was set in space, despite not being a Trek or Wars kid, and realising I love the ocean more actually. (Correct name spelling btw)

6:20 It's been 25 years since I last watched seaquest, and I still remember the plot twist with the poop "gems"...

SeaQuest, Earth 2 and Star Trek TNG - my childchood trifecta... Oh the 90s, what a wonderful time for SF...

I remember as a teen watching the last episode of season 2 and I hated it because of how SeaQuest ship got taken out so easily. In my country, they never aired season 3, so I didn't know it existed until a couple decades later. I still have not gotten around to watching it. I would have to watch over the first 2 seasons first.

About six months ago I remembered this show and tried to remind my parents of it (we watched it every week) and they had no idea what I was talking about. So I began to look it up and could find nothing. I thought I must have merged two shows together or something like that since I was quite young. Today I decided to try looking it up again and found it immediately. Very strange!

I remember when Syfy's big draw when first becoming a cable network was they would air the reruns of SeaQuest. In fact, it was a birthday gift from my dad that he paid the subscription plan that we get Syfy along with premium movies. That was definitely one of my happiest memories

You mean Sci-Fi. When the network reinvented itself from the top down and called itself Syfy in 2009 it lost a lot of what made it so great. There were some gems of programming in the early 2010s (the Eureka-WH13 universe) but all of that is gone now. The channel prides itself now with its harry potter marathons and nonstop horror movies from September thru December

I think if Seaquest was ever to be rebooted, mixture style of season 1 and 3 would be great. That war and ocean realism with maybe some underwater secret sci-fi element thrown in. I loved the last episode, it felt like start of something new. Loved what they did with Tim O’Neil and Kimura would be great addition to the crew. She already had great backstory, what a wasted potential. Just when the show seemed to be heading somewhere good it got cancelled. 😔😢

Also I think all three seasons had themes that would work the problem was you just can't get them to mesh together. By the sounds of it they just needed to pick one and stick with it. However if they were to redo it today you no dog on well and get too involved into modern politics and things like that it wouldn't be the show that it was

I loved this show! Dagwood was definitely my favorite character. This would be a good show to make a comeback, even if just for a mini-series.

My best friend and I called this show Lucas DSV because Brandis was so central to it.

Brandis managed to not be annoying. Unlike a certain TNG kid.

RIP J. Brandis. You were a child-acting role model back in those days.

If not for Jonathan Brandis i never wouldve had the gall to fight back at school against some really creatively mean kids, im 32 now. and because of the movie Sidekicks where he starred with Chuck Norris, i actually got the bullying to stop. great story overshadowed by the obvious thing that its just like the karate kid, but in my opinion much better and more believable. RIP Jonathan Brandis, thanks for showing me its better to not make it easy for a bully, because he at his core is no better than you.

It was a shame what happened to Brandis but much of what lead to his death was more from Hollywood politics than dealing with dropping out of the limelight. He was cast in a film, "Hart's War" which he believed to be his chance for a comeback. Unfortunately, because of background dealings from TPTB, his role was largely cut out of the film and any opportunities dried up from there.

I was looking up dead celebs from 90s and found this among many other other things that have reminded that Man life is short. I can’t believe so much time has passed.

Just so happen to be wearing my SeaQuest hat today.

Loved the show as a kid, but found the second season rather alienating; the third season even moreso.

I loved this show so much. Re-watched it a bunch when it came to streaming. Had the model, video game was all in.

I watched the whole series on SCI-FI Channel reruns, and I bought some of the action figures from Shop-ko. We didn't have a Walmart yet.

Love the call for people in distress to seek help - great video - loved this series - even Series 3. :)

I still remember this show frequently being pitched to German audiences back then through the Hollywood Reporter and i always felt Roy Scheider was perfect as the captain of that ship. He even got the german dubbing voice of William Shatner that Shatner had during the course of Star Trek TOS, most of the movies (except Star Trek II and III) as well as TJ Hooker until his german voice Actor Gerd Günther Hoffmann died in 1997 at the age of 68. So yeah, Roy Scheider really felt a lot like Captain Kirk but underwater, in the german dub of Seaquest DSV. And i loved seeing Jonathan Brandis too whom i first saw a few years earlier in "The Never Ending Story II" and really liked him a lot.

I was so sad when I heard Jonathan died, may his soul be resting peacefully. 😢😢

Great review of one of the favorite shows of my youth. When this was airing I remember people talking about it being derivative but as a young Trek fan I was just like 'cool: Star Trek but in a new setting, that's fine by me!' As I was watching this it occurred to me how many scenes from this are still fresh in my memory: * The episode where they travel in time to witness Bay of Pigs gone wrong * The episode where they encounter a pre-Voyager Tim Russ(!) where he mentions Apple beating Microsoft (in like 93/94, something that even as an Apple fan at the time seemed completely ludicrous and yet...) * The S3 establishing shot where you see SQ in the cornfield (great visual) I also can't help but to enjoy how: * In Yesterday's Enterprise a ship from the past is brought to the future, altering the universe to make it more militarized. It's then returned, *preventing* the Federation from being on the brink of war * SeaQuest had a timeskip where it *not* being present *caused* the world to be on the brink of war ** In this new, more martial universe, Michael Ironside is the captain. Ironside would go on to be in the movie adaptation of Starship Troopers, a depiction of a fully militarized universe. So in a way S3 of SeaQuest is like the 'bad end' of Yesterday's Enterprise.

What an under rated show. I used to sit and build lego while watching it back in the day. I just started a rewatch of it.

Sea quest was my show!! I had such a big crush on Brandon...(loved him since Never Ending Story) I was super sad when I heard he passed away. It did go down and I think I stopped watching

In 93 I was a freshman in high school. It wasn't cool to talk about Sea Quest. Everyone was obsessed with Beavis and Butthead and The Real World. The mid 90s was a weird time for a lot of things. Well depending on where you grew up I guess.

This was yet another of those series I loved, even with all the screwing around the network did. Yes, Krieg's glowing "gems" episode still makes me laugh today....and always rethink picking up glow in the dark items. In the end, the rotating cast I thought worked, being a military crew.

@@kjpierson1152 i just rewatched the hole series a few weeks ago, i neve saw it as a comparison to Star Trek hahaha but now that he mentioned it :D There are a lot of similarities :D but still love it, i stumbled over this channel and made Abo now :D And that is one of my favorite episodes hihi, For me the whole series ws completely fine, i must admit i loved all of it except a few episodes, i can't recount exactly but can't be more than 5 i didn't like :D

I have been thinking about this show recently.. It was brilliant.. It had legs and could have gone much further.. It's a damn shame and sorry to hear about the loss of Mr Brandis..

I remember when we bought our first TV in the 90s - it was an old b&w set with bunny ears antennas, and the pilot of SeaQuest was the first thing that broke through the fuzz and came on screen. Tuning in for SeaQuest became our family evening activity. I also remember building SeaQuest out of my legos. I miss the 90s

I remember SeaQuest DSV being shown here in the UK in the 90s. I liked it. I remember the late Yaphet Koto making a cameo as well.

Dude, I just started rewatching the show after I was looking through old NBC commercials. I love the first two seasons. Now if Babylon 5 can come back to tv, so can this show.

Babylon 5 is an upcoming reboot of the original series in development for broadcast on The CW. Series creator J. Michael Straczynski is writing the pilot and will return as showrunner and executive producer, with Warner Bros. as the producing studio. Ironside totally carried the third season. That's so funny that he said that he based the character off of his own father -- I didn't come from a great home, so when I was depressed as a kid and lacked motivation to do something I didn't care about, like school assignments, etc., I would legit imagine Capt. Hudson ordering me to do it.

You do realize that "You Know Who" is now 52 years old. I mean, don't get me wrong, she looks good for her age, but still... she was in her 20s when she played on Seaquest.

I used to love this show and had a huge crush on Jonathan Brandis! I didn't know it was canceled, I thought my local channel simply stopped showing it. I was so pissed and I called the network complaining, lol!

I LOVED Seaquest. I was in 8th grade when it premiered and watched it from day one. Then much to my surprise my Science teacher incorporated the show into his class. Part of our home work was to watch the show, I was in heaven probably the o oh person in class that was excited about having to watch the show.

The show is similar to the Irwin Allen's tv show of the 1960s called Voyage To The Bottom of the Sea. That is more of a military part which blended in with sci-fi into it. Then, when they took that idea, they decided to look to add Star Trek:The Next Generation as well for the non-military people. So, the show was more of the those two shows. Then, later seasons, they added time travel which is more of The Time Tunnel and not Doctor Who. The Time Tunnle was another Irwin Allen's creations. There was also a hint of Lost In Space which was another Irwin Allen's creation. This show had more of ideas from irwin Allen than anything else.

You provide good info i would never know without them that this show exists. I do not know much about Hollywood shows, especially about the old ones, my birth is around 2000, so I do not witness these long testimonial shows.

Thank you for the retrospective on this. I have somewhat forgotten about the show over the years. The first season was actually quite solid. The point about it being frequently pre-empted by sports and specials was actually a really big deal. I remember trying to get into it and it never being on when I remembered to tune in. I eventually came back in the second season, saw the reboot dynamics, and decided to stay away.

I got all 3 season on Blu-ray from Germany ( I’m In the UK ). I remember when this was on tv back in the early 90s. Loved it.

I watched this all the time when it was being broadcast. Sadly, I was in university at the time and couldn’t watch as it was being broadcast, but I did record the episodes. I am also a big fan of Ms. Haiduk. I barely remember watching the original Superboy show with her in it. But I definitely watched the old Kindred: the Embraced where I fell in love with those eyes. Last I saw of her (and I saw EVERYTHING) was in True Blood.
