WTF? CRAZY, INSANE, TOTALLY NUTS - Spec Miata Racing Gone Wild - VIR HST 2023

Спорт

Not our finest moment as a class. After both qually sessions were run in the rain with almost zero laps, many of the fastest guys were at the back of the field. Lots of aggression, lots of marginal decisions, and lots of carnage. Three Full Course Yellows made it even more intense with intensity ramping up towards the charge for the checker.
I start back in 44th position, and in less than 7 race laps, I make it all the way to challenge for the podium and ultimately finish 4th.
Unfortunately, towards the end of the race, I make contact with another racer, Julian Dacosta and he goes off and does not finish the race. Not happy about it al all, but it was a combination of several things:- me being too ambitious, the Julian being squeezed and turning down on me, and the car behind me punting me as I breathe for Julian. Not a great scenario and I hate to be involved. Ruined any satisfaction I should have had for what otherwise was a pretty awesome drive.
On the motor racing front I compete in SCCA and NASA events around the USA. I race both Spec Miata (SM) and Super Touring Lite (STL) cars. My cars are prepared by OPM Autosports in Atlanta, my SM is powered by Rossini Racing Engines, my STL is powered by Nelson Racing Engines, and both cars are stopped courtesy G-Loc Brake Pads, with contingency support from Hoosier Racing Tire, Toyo Tires and Mazda Motorsports.
On the motorcycle front, I race Hare Scrambles and Dessert Off-Road Races, and do a bunch of long, multi-day trips on adventure bikes around the world.

The risk is so high. Great job Danny, but dang, I’m not ready to throw away a destroyed Spec Miata. Yikes! Loads of excitement tho.

Glad you got to watch this race Randy. Very unusual circumstances with some of the fastest drivers all starting at the back due to terrible wet qually sessions where many did not get a time. So hard to make your way through a field of 66 Spec Miatas, who all have the right to the same piece of asphalt. This came down to picking the right side of every scuffle to move forward, but unfortunately there were many casualties!

Nice drive, and great engine that easily runs down every car on the track...too good.

That is a drive but the amount of contact of nose to tail, side to side is just crazy. Everyone said I am not giving you an inch anywhere.

You are spot on, so many talented drivers all who want to win, not wanting to give up an inch. That is what makes Spec Miata SO exciting!

I’m glad to see you own it in the rolling text saying “we ALL could have done better, myself included.” It’s an exciting video to watch. Everyone knows you’re an expert-level, championship class winning driver, but not everyone else is and I’m afraid the problem is people watch your video and think it’s OK to drive off course to complete a pass (kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zod41MuPlKXKaKg.html), turning others with a stout fender shove (kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zod41MuPlKXKaKg.html), and frequent bumping to pass at one of the track’s fastest sections (kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zod41MuPlKXKaKg.html). I understand it’s Hoosier Super Tour, not a regional race, but we are still club racers. The risk and expense of crash damage repairs and personal injuries are still real, just saying!

Rowan. Had the qually sessions run the way they normally do, and had the qually sessions been green, the class would have sorted itself out from fastest to slowest, and most of this stuff would not have happened. But it didnt, and we raced with what we had. Despite the mess, I LOVED every moment of it, wheel to wheel, door handle to door handle, like motocross with a cage! Spec Miata is the BOMB!

Hi Jake the Snake - sorry that you feel that way. I see it very differently and that is what makes the world so wonderful, we all see it from different perspectives. Personally, as a 65 year old fart, I LOVE the excitement that Spec Miata offers. So many TRULY TALENTED drivers that have joined our class that to even finish in the top 20 in a Hoosier Super Tour event is a major accomplishment. I will always seek out the most competitive class to play.
