They aircheck features Boston’s WRKO from 1973. WRKO was still the market's Top 40 leader but the winds of change were blowing.
Paul Drew was tinkering with the station, adding cold segues, making jock breaks shorter, and going for a more music approach on the air. If you listen carefully, you can hear the changes.
It’s the all request weekend, so it makes for an interesting listen. Also, at the very end of the aircheck, you’ll hear a little bit of Tony Mann on the air, who later went on to Philadelphia.
Feel free to check out some of the many other videos on the Ellis B Feaster's Radio Channel! Established in 2008! One of You Tube's oldest RADIO AIRCHECK MUSEUM with a NEW VIDEO posted daily at 3PM EST.
After over 40 years working on the radio, I have recorded lots of radio airchecks, and many from my friends as well. You'll find audio of many radio personalities who have passed away. Lots radio recordings from the 1940s, through the 2010.
We also talk about radio broadcasting. If you happen to have classic airchecks, maybe even of yourself on the air, we'd love to share it here! If you are on the radio, or do voiceovers for You Tube videos, I have tips to make your radio show or video voiceovers better!
In addition to sharing audio from my 40 years in broadcasting, we also share videos about Travel & Cruising. I share tips on how I travel cheaply, so you can do it also!

Loved listening with a tear of nostalgia in my eye & ear! WRKO was my go to station to listen to. Through the 70s Boston was regular stomping grounds when I visited family & friends. And the station was similar to our WOR-FM in the early 70s. Long live More Music WRKO!🎙️
Very interesting..
Love ur radio Luxembourg set up mr feaster blessings always
Audio starts at 1:22
Thanks for this, Ellis! Took me back to high school! A few years later, when I was an AFRTS jock, I was on home leave, and they let me visit the station. They were ALL CART! Such a revelation!! So thanks again!

Thank you for your service, Eric.
This was the prelude of WRKO returning to Top 40 from its failed AoR days.
I wonder if the Brant Miller that called in from Chicago is the same one that ended up on WLS 4 years later!
I was hoping to hear a John Masters 20-20 newscast
The title shows the date as March 1973, but at 3:51, Monday, January 22, is mentioned.
Never understood why the big 68 didn’t have the jocks doing the weather over a song intro ? The dead air sounds a bit weird on top 40 stations
Sounds like a different Mark Jackson than the MJ at WOR-FM in the early 70's who was actually Steve O'Brien.
Hi ya Ellis: I've been working on a feature film screenplay about a popular dj and a teen fan of his taking place Summer 1978. Was AM radio then considered Top 40. I know boss was done by then. And were radio song request call ins big then?? Much Appreciated! Mark in Vancouver, Canada

Hi Mark. In 1978 there were still many Top 40 stations on AM, but their days were numbered, as the listener migration to FM was already underway. You still had some request shows in in 78, but not as many as in the 1980s.
Love your enthusiasm for this and your introduction. A bit like Alastair Cooke but for my fave thing, radio...

Three Dog Night's Seven Separate Fools... that caller scored herself a good album.
Ellis, is that the same Tony Mann that worked in Philly for all those years? Just wondering. I guess the only element left from the Bill Drake era was the Johnny Mann jingles? Thanks for posting this great blast from the past.
