Thank you for mentioning the fact that a lot of authors make the mistake of trying to draw conclusions that aren’t there, or drawing conclusions that can be implied instead.

I know this post was a while ago but I love Erik Larson books. He has a particular style of telling the story with a dual story line usually parallel stories of two opposing characters that really makes the person or events more interesting and compelling. You should review, if you have not already, any of his books.

One of the things I struggle with as a cnf writer is exactly what you said -- not everything goes. I definitely have that mindset of "everything matters" and then I end up trying to cram EVERYTHING possible into a small story so the reader "gets it". But i'm enjoying the process of trying to get better at this and self-edit!

I am currently working on a non fiction short story but I have never done it before. It’s about a good friend of mine who died 20 years ago in a car accident. Although I was absent at the time of the tragedy, I feel largely responsible for his passing. The details will be explained in my story. As for my late friend, he cannot be brought back... The only happy ending is, if through my story, I can influence others, especially teenagers and people in their twenties, to think before they act and conduct themselves in a responsible manner. I have just started on this project and I’m finding it more difficult than I first anticipated. That’s what led me to your video, it has been most helpful! Thank you for taking the time to help others with their writing ambitions!

@@shastastudent6377 I appreciate that. I’ve tried numerous times to write this story but each time it has proven to be more difficult than I anticipated. The emotions that it stirs up within myself has been too much for me to handle. I need to find a way to push through it because it would therapeutic for myself and beneficial to those who read it. I do have my outline and parts of it written but still have a long way to go. I appreciate your message, it might be exactly what I need to get it done. Thanks!

Hi. i enjoyed what you said. I've just listened to a video that almost makes me lose faith in working on creative non-fiction and the publishing world. You've encouraged me to continue.

Mollie I’ve written a non-linear memoir focusing on the SF Bay Area circa 1982-86 centered on the birth of thrash metal. I witnessed this nascent scene firsthand and have weaved, I hope, a somewhat humorous narrative of my teen years through it. I’m interested in your opinion on having a non-sequential timeline on concerts attending in combination with teen antics. Thanks for the video as I will be watching at least twice more to narrow the focus of the book a bit more.

Lab Girl by Hope Jaren is one of the best memoirs I’ve read. I feel like it has spoiled me from other memoirs because it was so engaging. Definitely check it out. (Very good as an audiobook!)
