Woah, boy is this an old video. Thanks for all the new views guys, it means a lot! Just dropping in to say one thing. I should have been clear in this video that some of these things are more appropriately considered 'Tropes' rather than cliches. The good news is that I did a video talking about the important differences kzread.info/dash/bejne/ineZtthvnqm_hJc.html

I could never write a mystery novel, at least, not one that could be taken seriously. I think I would be able to write a PARODY of mystery novels. In fact, I'll do it write now. THE DUDE ON THE TOILET A wealthy aristocrat was hosting a party, and the next day, all the guests were dead. The only witnesses were the aristocrat's 27 butlers and a guest who was taking a dump when the whole thing happened. In response, Sherman Holmes, a retired detective with a drinking problem is called in to solve the case of who did it.

The third cliché made me think of the difference between the movie adaptation and the book, Horns. In the movie, the murderer is shown as this great, helpful guy and is used as a twist. In the book though, the murderer is given away early. This may not make for a good twist, but I loved it because I didn't have to think as much about "who dunnit" and instead I could learn more about how/why he dunnit. And the (sort of) twist is ultimately the answer to how/why. I'm probably not explaining it well, but I thought it was a unique way of writing the mystery and it obviously resonated with me well.

I agree as a fan of the genre that mystery is something very difficult to get right. Personally, I prefer a satisfying reveal that I was able to guess from the information given over one that is cliche or doesn't make sense (or that the reader couldn't possibly guess). In terms of titles, I'm quite partial to the play on words, something picked up from my love of police/detective shows like CSI.

I have a question about avoiding those clichés because I'm writing my first mystery story. This reality, I had in mind is a dieselpunk/decopunk world in the year 1935, and it's run by anthropomorphic animals (so there are no humans in this world). So, I was wondering how would you make your story interesting, and avoiding those clichés?

Tropes are not cliches. There is nothing new under the sun - if you can imagine a story premise - it has probably been thought of before - writing is an art as much as a technique - so it's the 'how' not the 'what' that makes the difference between mediocre and great.

A stronger trope on the redeemed washout is, the rabbit hole chaser vs popular opinion. Its not so much the clues that the detectives miss, its the questions they cant answer or wont entertain without rock solid evidence, and how the rabbit hole chase demonstrates theres more involved. Because you can put even normal characters in that role in their driven hunger for truth.

Well in a mystery story I’m trying to come up with there is a fake out protagonist who supposedly gets killed off at the beginning and doesn’t show up again except for a few brief mentions of him, after the fake protagonist supposedly dies the real protagonist goes through all the death and mayhem and stuff it is revealed that the real protagonist was behind everything, anyways after a few sequels it is revealed that the fake protagonist was the one behind it and the real protagonist (fake protagonists brother) was essentially used as a distraction so the fake protagonist could continue without suspicion. I think that I might have the final twist a tad bit too complicated even though I have planned out various clues I don’t want anyone figuring it out right away so I put some other clues to distract the audience from the real mystery, at one point the fake protagonist even bribes a politician to use him as another red herring. Anyway I haven’t actually made this yet and just wanted your thoughts on whether or not the final twist is good. Edit: Also the bad guy (who is a demon who enlisted fake protagonist to help come up with this incredibly elaborate plot) ends up technically winning in the end but is defeated at the last second by another demon who was supposedly helping the good guys but just wanted to harvest the negative emotions of the human race to create a portal to another dimension.

Wow. I don't write in this genre at all. So I effortlessly avoid all these cliches. Mystery is not my thing. There are very few I like. I like them because they have something ese good besides the mystery. Detective Pikachu has realistic Pokemon. Who Framed Roger Rabbit similarly has cartoons in real life. Zootopia has furries. My favorite mystery is the Robert Langdon books by Dan Brown. The mystery is interesting and thrilling. However the best part in my opinion is the mystical ideas that are explored. I especially like the secret societies. This kind of thing would fit well in fantasy instead. The most famous book in the series is the DaVinci Code. The title avoids the title cliche you mentioned, but it still gives good mystery and intrigue. What is being said in the paintings of DaVinci? How does this relate to Mary Magdaline and the Holy Grail? You do have a sad detective as the main character. It does remind me of the detective in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Pikachu in Detective Pikachu is a play on it. He did loose a parter in the past. The partner death was subverted. People think there was a death when there is actual survival. Pikachu had amnesia, so he didn't have memories to wallow in. He also drinks lots of coffee instead of booze. I find the concept of thriller difficult to wrap my mind around. It is based on making something exciting. However excitig stuff happens all the time. It is practically a requirement in horro and action. It also mixes really well with fantasy and sci fi. I notice that the videos are listed from order of what I am more into than less into. First my favorite genre is fantasy. I am obsessed with it. My second favorite is romance. I don't go gaga over this genre like some readers. However I do enjoy the mushy stuff as long as its done right and there are other things in a story. Then there is sci fi. I can get into a bit. It is related to my favorite genre. I also like science. So there are some science fiction stories I like. Examples are Star Wars, Lilo and Stitch, Jurassic Park and Marvel movies. My favorite is Avatar. I guess one thing that makes Avatar different is that it focuses more on the ecology of an alien world as opposed to the technology. The Na'vi and thier natural environment is very interesting and appealing for me. So it is sort of like how some fantasy stories focus more on the otherwordly and not so much on human technology and civilization. I am not into mystery and horror as much. So they are last. If you need more video ideas, I would personally like to see another romance one. The first romance video is great. This is the prt where cliches trip me up the most. I got some ideas. I don't know what are official names so I will give a brief description. Instalove is a cliche where lovers fall in love right away. Slow burn tease is where people hang out and it takes way to long to hook up. Bad boy is a cliche where the male lover is nauty and thrill seeking. Soul mates may or may not be cliche. A couple has a special connection. They bond for life. Changing the lover is where the main character influinces the lover to change. I think the worst cliche in romance is the abusive relationship. To be honest, it is problematic and overused. One can do thier instalove and love triangles. They will be good as long as they don't use the abusive relationship. This cliche is when one lover displays abusive behavior toward another. I have experienced abuse in my personal life. It is by family members and not by any significant others. Abuse is not lovely at all. It is actually a living hell. I have enjoyed stories with this trope, but I am well aware that the trope is problematic. I think the main draw is to have the bad boy trope, which a guilty pleasure of mine. With practice I do learn to balance between a lover that is too nasty and abusive and a lover that is too goody and boring. I can give the love interest some creepy things. Th guy can look creepy. He may live in a creepy house. He can do some morally questionable things as long as it is done in moderation. However deep down the guy is a good person. He is kind and moral. Most importantly he has to treat the female with a decent about of respect. Some arguments and conflict is okay. It just has to be in careful moderation. There should never be any signs or red flags for abuse. With practice I am getting better at striking the balence for male love interest characters.

I dislike the "Hero falls for the woman he can't have yet continues to pursue" Thing, that's getting old to me. I'm getting annoyed by the "Girl who falls for the first guy to be nice to her" Thing, that's also becoming quite old & over used. Just want to give my opinion. Love your videos.
