Wreck of the Old 97 - Marcel Arendsen

The Wreck of the Old 97 was an American rail disaster involving the Southern Railway mail train, officially known as the Fast Mail (number 97), while en route from Monroe, Virginia, to Spencer, North Carolina, on September 27, 1903. Travelling at an excessive speed in an attempt to maintain schedule, the train derailed at the Stillhouse Trestle near Danville, Virginia, where it careened off the side of the bridge, killing 11 on-board personnel and injuring seven others. The wreck inspired a famous railroad ballad, this time as an instrumental by me.

Lovely picking, just how I like it. No need for outrageously difficult finger-busting show-off fancy licks, but just perfect timing, lovely little touches (eg 0:23, 0:40, 0:58 and 1:11) excellent dynamics, and a quietly inventive right hand with perfectly chosen rolls. It's a simple 3-chorder, but playing it as well as this certainly isn't simple! Very musical. It's delicious!

Hi Bernie, thank you for your nice comment. I have a bag full of show-off fancy licks but only use them sporadically. Over time I started playing the melody more and more. Actually that's harder than all those fancy licks together. Cheers, Marcel

I love the way you keep the pace so modest and musical ..... reminds me of Bill Emerson who I knew just a little .... he described it as getting the space between the notes just right . Thanks Marcel and R.I.P. Bill . Have you ever considered an album of your favorites ? Do you ever visit the U.S. to perform ... ?

Hi Marmerg, thank you for your comment. I am currently still working full-time, but next year I will have a little more time. Indeed, I sometimes think about making a personal album. Who knows.... In 2025 my wife and I will visit family in NJ. Of course I will take my banjo with me and look for bluegrass venues or festivals.
