Omega Protein is a CANADIAN company!! I've seen the videos of what they do, and it doesnt look sustainable, and its wildly wasteful. Saw one video of a river of big reds floating behind one of those ships. Nobody will have to worry about overharvest of all the big predators if you wipe out their primary food source.

I am a lifelong angler here in coastal SE NC, The Southern Flounder has always been my favorite fish to hunt for. Back When I was younger, I didn't think much about conservation and as I got older I started to see that the population of these southern flounder were not as prevalent as they were in the early 80's. What really set me off was I knew it and as I found out the state of NC knew it as well but did nothing to correct it or try to save it. From the feedback I get on my channel it seems people have given up and just blame the politicians. I try to explain the science behind southern flounder migration and how it works, and I get the "I'm catching more flounder than I ever have" I am as well but I know why! Thanks so much for your videos and your dedication to this fishery, I have shared your videos with many people. Good thing is my rep lives about a mile from me and I went to school with him. "Us" is any citizen of NC who feels like the current management is failing us. The Anglers Rights Alliance is just a FB group. No particular organization at this point from any legal perspective or otherwise. It was originally intended to become a PAC, but there wasn't enough public buy-in from a $ perspective, so now it's just a place for individuals to share information that can help each individual know how to apply pressure or cast votes I a way that will help to bring change to our states fisheries management.

I contacted Renee Price, district 23, and received a reply, but it was only an explanation of why the DMF closed the rec flounder season. She also said the rec flounder quota was going up to 40% in 2025 an 50% in 2026. I replied to her that had nothing to do with why we have a flounder problem. I mentioned the ravaging of the Pamlico sound nursery by large shrimp trawlers. The lack of enough DMF officers to patrol the beaches, boat ramps and on the water patrols. I said the DMF needs to be revamped. Keep Raleigh out of the mix and put marine biologists on the commission to do a scientific study of our fisheries. You must know quite a lot about this to recommend that solution. I agree that we must allow science to guide our decisions as opposed to feelings and politics. It's worth noting that 50/50 might sound fair until you realize that comm fishing accounts for .2% of the people who buy licenses that support the management of these fish. It's also worth noting that back in 2018 when we had a real season, the rec sector generated 250 million in sales and we only took 10% of the flounder. Comm took 90% of the flounder and generated 18 million in sales. The math makes absolutely no sense. Make sure to note that making these changes don't end all seafood in NC either. Currently 90% of the seafood consumed in NC is imported. This is the result of overfishing and wasteful practices for decades. These practices have only continued due to political contributions and very good professional lobbying.

I've heard a lot of commercial folks tell me the same and I went down that road to try and see what we could do to fix it. I'm not just here to point the finger and complain like it may seem and if I could find areas where rec and comm could work together we could get any legislation passed in the blink of an eye. What I found was that the rivers are in wildly better shape than they were 50 years ago. I know that sounds crazy but call DEQ or WRC and ask them. Before we had an EPA the water was pretty extremely polluted. Nowadays the nitrate and nitrite levels from run off are managed well and stay within acceptable parameters. I truly wish what you are saying was the cause man. That would be so much easier than having to fight y'all.

Take a hard look at who is running against the incumbent, if they seem decent vote or them? Give them a chance, what is there is certainly not going to help you. If you call them and ask them are you for recreational fishing? Do you believe it’s a public trust resource? Of course they’re gonna lie to appease you. The supposed purpose of this legislation is based on "math that doesn't math". Data and statistics are only valuable when they tell a true story. Commercial by-catch has no relation to and therefore should not be considered for recreational limits nor seasonal restrictions. The flounder do not observe state lines; while neighboring states have reasonable seasons and limits for both commercial and recreational fishermen.

I felt exactly the same way years ago before I really dug into all this. You might be surprised by this, but a very high percentage of the flounder tagged in NC, are recaptured in NC. The mixing comes after spawn. Most of the large flounder barely even move more than a few hundred yards through the year except to move for the spawn.

The issue is very simple. NC accounts for 98.5% of the Flounder harvested for sale. SC GA and FL account for 2.5%. Until this number changes. Catch regulations and seasonal no flounder harvests allowed do exactly nothing to replenish the stock. Flounder is no longer a NC natural resource. It is a commodity that is too valuable for NC Recreational Fishermen rods and reel guys to keep. They must be sold for profit of a few.

There are a lot of commercial fishermen who think the trawls should be gone. The real argument is conservation and restoration vs. short-term greed. This is not a unique rec or commercial idea. The first time I ever spoke at an MFC meeting was in 2015. The gentleman who spoke before me said the same thing I did, and he was full-time commercial. We both saw this coming back then and back then, the MFC made empathetic decisions to try and not hurt anyone and here we are.

The lawsuit won't put CCA in charge in any way but it will require our legislators to get involved and come up with some new ways for us to run fisheries. It's clear to anybody involved that what we're doing right now isn't working out for anybody. All the lawsuit says is that the mismanagement of our fish stocks has resulted in the people of NC losing their right to harvest the public resource. Don't think anybody can argue the truth in that.

We live in the most commercial friendly state in the country. You know those big trawls hurt your future just as much as they do mine. The fish house owners have controlled this system to keep them inside to the detriment of everyone. When it comes down to it, we have more people wanting to catch/keep fish than there are fish to keep. Surely, you can see just how much preferential treatment the comm side gets when there are 1.3 million licensed anglers in the state, and less than 1% of them are comm, but yall get 70% of the allocation. The evidence is everywhere. Let me give you another example here. If I find an illegal set up the back of one of our New river creeks and grab the net to see what's in it, I've just committed a felony. But the dude who set the net illegally faces a 35$ fine. Look at the states around us. VA is pretty comm friendly, and their trout limit is 30lb/day. Our comm limit on them is set so high that you'll rarely even get your limit. What's worse is that your job isn't the only one impacted. Speckled trout revenue alone on the rec side is worth more than the entire comm fishery combined. There are a lot of people who have jobs that depend on that revenue. Don't get this twisted man, you can have my fish but that has to come with the agreement that we all back off enough for the stocks to rebuild and that's just not the direction we've been headed.
