I’m so happy to have found your video. I’ve had a 7ft tree fern for about 3 weeks now and I wanted an idiot’s guide on how to protect it during winter. Your video is clear so even I understand what I need to do. I can’t thank you enough for being so informative. Panic levels have gone down a notch and I’m so looking forward to enjoying the beauty of my fern for the whole summer next year, especially as I know now how to keep it safe during winter.

Unless you are living in the North pole that is over kill in my opinion. Tree ferns need water all through the winter to keep them moist Its when the produce next years fronds . They are hardy to minus 15 and only need the top foot protecting in very cold winters . Straw in the top helps and a small amount of fleece round the top foot but you should change it after a month or so to stop rot .

At the time of wrapping the tree fern, it will already be moist. When you include the straw, it will keep it's moisture. The ferns are roots into the ground so naturally absorbs water. Thank you for your comment.

Why I cannot just wrap the fleece straight around the plant? I mean, isn’t protecting the centre the main thing?

Thank you for watching the video. The answer to your question, you can wrap fleece around the tree fern trunk if you prefer. The reason I use the poles around the tree fern trunk, is to let the air circulate around the trunk. Hope that helps. Kind Regards Joe

I see, I understand. To prevent the accumulation of water in the centre, I have heard that. Thanks for replying
