I don’t really put any weight into the MPG factor. I drive way more electric miles than I do gas miles. So for me that 24-26 mile range electric (which is close to the equivalent of a gallon of gas used), if the charge is cheaper than a gallon of gas I’m ahead of the game. Like you said everyone’s usage and how they drive are different. You’ll drive yourself mad trying to compare MPG’s with your neighbors. I didn’t buy this vehicle for the MPGe, I bought it cause I smile every time I get in and drive it!

I agree. My wife is considering one. She has a ICE Sahara currently, works from home and typically goes 2-3 weeks between fill ups. Most her driving is well within the all electric max range. This seems like a no brainier from a pure fuel cost perspective.

Hybrid mode is great too. That’s the beauty of hybrid.

The simple things you do for us makes our lives so much better. Thank you for taking the time and the effort... seriously! At over $4.55 a gallon... it makes a difference.

That was a good experiment. I have calculated my MPG at around 17.5 with my '23 Willys. It is still pretty new so I expect that number to go up slightly. I can't get to work and back on a single charge, so I will never see as high a number on the "mpg" on the dash.

I appreciate drivers who are aware of their surroundings and other drivers. Hats off to you sir!

This was a great experiment, and I love that you did it. Thank ya so much, Chris! The TREND definitely matches up with my Rubi, if not the numbers. My 4XE Rubi is my first Wrangler, so I can only compare it to other vehicles I've driven regularly: A 2.0 Escape, a 1.6 Escape, a PT Cruiser GT, a Mustang GT... I'll stop there. This is the most "brick wall" vehicle I've ever driven, and it shouldn't surprise anyone. Like the standard Wrangler, it does relatively well up to about 60MPH. But above that, MPG tapers WAY more than most other vehicles, and no amount of hybrid magic will really bridge that gap. But one thing I will say is that city driving in this thing is pretty damn good, and you won't find it in very many vehicles that have 375HP on tap, big or small. Even with a depleted battery I think it does better than my Mustang, tooling around town.

Finally, somebody did the real test! I remember asking on a few channels when it first came out what the MPG would be highway and city if you never charged, such as on long trips, and being told "you don't understand this vehicle". Of course not, I don't even own one, but I often make 500- or 1000-mile trips, and I was curious about mileage and range when not charging, so I asked. Thanks for making this. I'm sure I was not the only one who wanted to know.

You averaged about what I average in my 22 Rubicon with XTreme Recon pkg. 35 in tires. Ez 21 on the hwy at 70+ on level ground. Wind is always a factor. As someone said, everyday is a wind advisory in a Jeep. Agree with your honest assessment that not factoring in the electric charging is fictitious. A lot skip over this. TY. Following.

The 4xe is an interesting vehicle. I look forward to the Ram Ramcharger. And hope Jeep vehicles adopt similar technology. But I did buy a '23 JLU Sport S Altitude. I like your presentation, and consider it very credible. My Jeep is usually driven by my wife for short trips in the Lancaster, CA area. She typically gets 18.5mpg. I can get around 21mpg. But on a highway trip from home to the Mono Lake area, over the hill to Yosemite, then stopped in Fresno. We got 27mpg. The next day, I went from Fresno back home to Lancaster, and got 29mpg. I look forward to the future full electric drive system, with the supplimental range extender engine. I primarily bought the Jeep to tow behind our '18 Ram 2500 pickup. That carries a 4wheel popup camper. To allow us to venture around when camping or visiting relatives on the road.

Freeways here run fast. Its tough to do the 65 mph speed limit. Usually running 70-75 mph here in San Diego.

I find that my 4xe (similar to my rav 4 hybrid) has problems with when the pump will shut off.. I think it has something to do with the pressurized tank.. but you can def get some scewed fill up quantities dependant on where you fill up and how much you can put it. That being said.. I can put like 2+ more gallons more into my tank after the fuel pump wants to stop it

I think you’re right. I always try to listen to the nozzle and fill up slower to try to compensate for that exact variable when I do various experiments. It could really throw the results off for sure.

No, it’s a Fishbone Off Road mount. I did just add a grab handle that works well with it.

In my daily use, if I put it in 4H_Auto I seem to get a little less electric miles then 2H. This is on the same route and all street driving. But I haven’t done multiple experiments to see.

Because auto will default to 2wd if no slip are detect. The 4x4 only engage once a slip detect and go back to 2wd.

To convert kwh to US gallons ( gasoline ) divide kwh by 12.38333, eg 100 ÷ 12.38333 = 8.075 gallons.

I'm so perplexed. hope you keep an eye on comments on older videos - would like your input. I'm only getting about 17 mpg when I drive 65 mph and 15 mpg at 70 mph. I don't drive like a maniac, I'm easy on the brakes and on the throttle. To see your in the area of 20+ mpg is really making me scratch my head. I have a 2024 Rubicon X 4xe. I'm not sure what year and trim you have (I'll peruse your other videos, maybe I can figure it out) but I get nowhere close to these numbers. I mean not even a little close. I can think of a couple factors that would explain the differences: If you have a Sahara or Sport then the smaller wheels will give you better mileage. Also I think the non-rubicon trims come with a an all season tire as opposed to the A/T tires on the Rubicon. The non-rubicon trims also have 3.73 rear axles which is going to help the mpg too as Rubicons have 4.10s Also the base weight (curb weight) of 2023 of the Saraha and Willys is about 5050 lbs whereas the 2024 Rubicon X is almost 5400 lbs so the 2024s are quite a bit heaver. Maybe these 4 factors: Rear end, tire type, wheel size and curb weight explain about 5 miles less per gallon?? Does this sound plausible? Love to hear your thoughts!

I think you nailed it. All of those factors come in to play. Are you calculating the gas milage at the pump or using the dash calculator? The gash calculator can be misleading.

@@Wrangler4XEFans I do it the old-fashioned way - using the calculator and odometer. Maybe on one of your mileage test videos you can track average miles per hour? There is a clock in the tripodometer which resets with the miles. You could simply divide miles driven by time to get your avg speed in the test. I'm going to repeat your test on my Rubicon X and am happy to send you my notes if you want. Unfortunately my Jeep has modifications so I can compare to the stock

Would be interesting to see if the battery mode set to charge has any impact.

It does. It brings down the MPG significantly. I have a few videos where I’ve tested it.

Have an issue with my 23 Jeep Wrangler JL SAHARA ULMTD 4Xe. This morning with 2440 miles, and could not shift out of park. In the instrument cluster on the left a small red circular light is on with the engine light. Any idea what the problem could be?

I think you should include the electric only miles on the trip because it is a hybrid and that’s energy produced by the system. Its electric mileage produced by the gas motor.

There weren’t any electric only miles from external charging. There were some points where the gas engine shut off that resulted from points of low demand, going down hill and deceleration. Those were included in the math.

@@Wrangler4XEFans oh ok it was based on total miles. I didn’t pay attention as well as I should have. My rubicon wrangler 4xe is mostly city I have just under 5,000 miles and have used a tank and a quarter of gas. I run it on gas purposely to avoid the warning every week. Only one trip of 120 miles from Albuquerque to Santa Fe and gas measured mileage was 21 mpg at 70 mph. I enjoy your content and explanations.

Curious, did you always fill up with the same octane rated fuel? And have you seen a degradation in power/mileage when you have fuel in your tank that is very old because you have so many E-only miles and the fuel has been sitting in the tank for weeks/months?

I always use 87. I haven’t seen any issues with fuel getting too old. Up until recently, I had a lot of random, unplanned driving. So I could never get much over 1,000 miles at most per tank. That season of life has ended so I’m able to do more electric miles. The 4XE has a sealed, pressurized fuel system to keep the gas fresh. But it also won’t let you go over 90 days between fillips. It will enter Fuel Oil Refresh Mode and make the engine run for a while.

1:36 lol the trip meter was the only thing i couldnt find in that instrument cluster :/ aside from that and what seemed to be sorta alright gas mileage I thought it was a good vehicle. Shucks

I've just been learning that not everyone has 10 screens. One thing to look at is your last screen and see if it's in the settings. Apparently you can enable or disable certain screens.

I notice with fuelio, to get an accurate number, I have to empty the tank of fuel. If I only put like 20 L, my number are way off.

Get rid of ur hard top.....replace w soft top to lighten car. Keep car at half filled gas to keep it lighter also.

It's not technology, it's physics. The Sienna has a drag coefficient of .28 where the Jeep Wrangler is .45. The Sienna is a 2WD mini van that is excellently designed for efficiency. The Jeep Wrangler is a 4 wheel drive, body on frame, rolling file cabinet that has 8 decades of design legacy that kills efficiency. No technology can make up for that.

Ive got 28 mpg on diesel jeep 2.8 crd 😂. Just like old tv is 122watt and new is 130 watt ...save the planet buy old 😂

Unless you are taking the exact same route each time you test then you need to take into account elevation . If not this test will not be accurate.

Well, to do a consistent side-by-side comparison, it's the only way to control the variables. But if I did a hilly area, I'd need to do the same loop twice. That's what I really need to do.
