WOW, My first ripe Mayapple, but how does it taste?

Ойын-сауық

Mayapple fruit is a wild edible that is deceptively hard to find ripe, but it is worth the effort. finding the fruit is easy. getting it before the squirrels, deer and raccoons is another chore all together.

Just had my first mayapple today. Found a bunch that were on slightly brown plants. All are bright yellow. Yummy! Glad I picked them.

Just went on a walk in a foresty park near my house and saw a ton of these lil apple things off the trail. Did some research on it and found out they’re may apples. Which led me to this video. Excited to go try them when they ripen up a bit! There’s also tons of paws paws in that park too. So cool how much fruit I can just go find near me.

True! The ripe mayapple is a truly rare treat. The pawpaws are good but they take forever to ripen it seems, but I love em

You can ripen them off the plant, but you have to wait until they start to turn partially white/ yellow before you pick them. Put them in a wicker basket, cover with a light towel or cloth and put somewhere with good air circulation. Had massive success with that method this year. Thanks for the video!

Interesting. So does ethylene gas accelerate the ripening? When I’ve brought them home they didn’t ripen at all. Of course they were just sitting on the countertop

Not sure about the ethylene, sorry. I struggled finding ripe mayapples for years and did some deep diving online this summer to learn more about ripening off the plant. I found one video on youtube on the subject and followed her advice that I wrote about in my comment above. Totally worked. That being said, this was an absolutely amazing harvest year for Mayapples. I found 10 times as many fruit as I typically do and was able to take advantage by picking slightly early. Making jam and mayapple muffins with mine!

@@danmeyer4303 Gotcha. so ethelyn gas is what banannas put off that will accelerate the ripening of other fruits. usually when a fruit ripens quicker in an enclosed space, like a wicker basket, it is because ethelyn gas is getting concentrated around the fruit... its an intersting one.. maybe ill try it out again

@@reliablyrandomoutdoors I licked one a few weeks ago… and it was oh so sweet. Then brought about a dozen home.. very white, ripe and sweetly pungent…almost like rotting fruit, or Asian fruit. The next morning I tossed them… worried my kids would eat them.. and me being still unsure. I suspect they were edible, but like I said.. I was unsure.
