Wow! a New Saddle

I have ridden in a Wintec GP for a couple of years and have been so pleased with it I have bought another Wintec, this time an Endurance saddle.

"Well the coat's off, and I'm still on..." Oh Tara, priceless! I had to think, did I ever take my coat off? Because I don't ever remember taking off my coat once I went back in memory, how strange! I think because it was either very cold (where I'd never take off my coat) or very warm (where I'd never put one on). Obviously if even Apollo had the same reaction it's definitely a "thing" with horses, which miraculously I avoided. I'd love a suede type saddle just for that reason you discussed, more "stickability." We still own a beautiful plantation saddle with a gentle forward "roll" to inhibit flying forward/off... It's so old now not sure if I'd trust it without a complete rebuild. My twin had bought an Australian saddle with a suede seat and pronounced roll, said she'd never felt that secure, she loved it. It was marvelous to see you with Farouk and new saddle, also to see Ike's handsome face, heart melter he is. Can't wait to see tomorrows video :)

I also have a Wintec. Mine is an Australian Pro Stock. My saddle fitter told me it is very important to have a good thick saddle pad that HAS to be of natural fibers only. He loves synthetic saddles. But said he had seen horses with damaged backs because synthetic retains and reflects body heat back at the horse. Which, as he put it, cooks the horses back muscles during long rides and hot days. Signs of that damage start showing up as white patches on the fur in the area under the saddle. Just something to watch out for. He recommended wool. That being said, my Wintec is extremely comfortable for me and I love that I can adjust the saddle's fit as my Moriesian mare gains and loses weight during the course of the year. I also like how grippy the suede like material feels. Especially when I wear my Buckwild breeches. They have silicone dots on the areas that contact the saddle. Which adds more security to my seat. I have been using regular English stirrup leathers with mine. Do you like the Wintec straps that hold on the irons? I have been on the fence about switching over to them.

tfs. It is important to make sure which ever numnah you use it is lifted up into the spine of the saddle this allows air to pass along the horses back as a coolant and keeps the weight off the withers. I use webber type leathers on all my horses much less bulk under my leg.

Hi.. I use to fit wintec and thorowgood synthetic saddles when we had the equestrian and fishing tackle shop... I bought an endurance saddle for my Welsh cob it had pimples on the seat which was great a lovely saddle to ride in...until a farmer drove me off the road with his tractor... My horse used to puff up whenever I even touched him with the girth. I started to just connect the girth, get on and tighten from atop. For whoever reason he didn’t keep puffing up when I was atop. Horses are smile makers. As to taking off my jacket, i’f lean forward across his neck and he didn’t mind my removing my jacket. Sitting up and trying to remove jacket or getting anything from the saddle bag was a dancing opportunity.

Very smart Tara, be interesting to hear your views after riding in it and I believe it’s adjustable so that you can find the best leg position. I notice you’ve gone for black, so now on your shopping list will be a nice black bridle 😊 You are so right to be cautious when taking your coat off, many years ago I witnessed a nasty accident where the rider did just that and the horse literally exploded, she came off and got kicked in the face, resulting in a nasty injury requiring stitches and the horse remained very weary for a long time after. Although this was over 30:years ago, it’s one thing that I have always been careful with ever since, same with anyone else who witnessed it. Looking forward to part 2 😊

I once got thrown off taking my jumper off when I was walking one of the race horses on quiet country lanes, huge mistake I ended up with a huge boiled egg size lump on the side of my knee got checked out an the doctor said with me been so supple I was lucky I hadn’t broken anything just badly bruised. The endurance saddles are such a good choice when you ride out a lot and even have the little d's to hand some little saddle bags off if needed. I have saddle packs when I go out with a first aid kit and snake bandages etc, but as I ride in a dressage saddle, these go up the front on the front saddle d's. Looks lovely and comfortable

A lovely room to sit in on a spring day, enjoying the sun and early warmth. I took a peek at the Wintec company site, and was reminded how I was lectured about my expensive tastes going all the way back to intermediate school [there's a saddle still sitting in the family's tack room which was the first Austrian high knee roll that my grandparents bought me as a birthday present when I started competition jumping 60 years ago. My family definitely got their money out of it; there are my cousins' children - the age of my grandchildren - still using it for lessons and generally hacking around - it has held up extremely well through the years, with minor bits having been replaced or updated]. It was strange to hear you talking about not having experience with the knee rolls! My preference was always very pronounced knee rolls, definitely for jumping and even for trail riding; I hated the so-called Park Seat which had wide, slick fenders, but no rolls, and would only use one if required. I could not imagine riding even today without very pronounced knee rolls. P.S.: I remember, on a very warm day, deciding to take off my jacket and tying the sleeves around my waist. The gelding I was riding was very nervous through the procedure. However, he and I parted company very percipitiously when a breeze caught my tails and bounced then off his rump. Just sustained bruises I remember, but I NEVER tried that trick again!

It looks really nice on him, Tara. It got me thinking back to the first synthetic saddle that I purchased for my Anglo -Arab mare. She was of a fine build and short coupled. I bought in the 1980's when they first became a thing. Naturally, saddles have developed a lot since then. But I purchased it mainly for day trips to the beach and for riding in very muddy conditions. It came from Walsall in Birmingham and I think I paid all of about £70.00 for it? So easy to clean! To this day, I still have it as a keeps sake and its still in fairly good condition. The manufacturers name was Thorowgood saddles. So after watching your video, I was curious to see if The Company was still on the go? Lo and behold, yes they are! The modern day prices have gone up some what though :-)

I recently bought a synthetic shoulder relief girth, as my lads saddle was moving forward as his butt has come up in the last month or so. Certainly cheaper than a new saddle! So far it has worked a treat, saddle stays put, does not pinch his shoukders, and he does not knock into the girth when he trots. I am thinking that I may invest in a Winteck, because it has the ability to change with his growth (he's 5 so still 2 years before he reaches maturity), and I can hose it off easily, as it is VERY dusty here (N Arizona). Also, I will be looking for something with very short panels to suit his short back... My biggest problem with his current saddle, is that the girth straps have a fabric on the back of them, which makes it impossible to find the strap holes while in the saddle - and forget it when you have gloves on! It was a cheap saddle/bridle combo purchased from Amazon, and it has paid for itself. Over the next few months I will be looking for a saddle for him. I was considering dressage girths - not even thinking about the practicality of doing them up from the saddle! Glad you mentioned that. 😁

You have to lean over to do up the dressage girth from the saddle but I did it easily, however Rens had to help put the keeper in the correct position but now I know this I will make sure it's right before I get on.

@@Tara101 Did Farouk seem to prefer the two straps rather than one wide band? Just curious. When I rode years ago, it was with a webbing girth, that used to roll up when it got sweaty, and always looked like it was uncomfortable (wasn't my tack, and there were not many options back then). Mine is a lot less naggy now with the wide set back girth 😊

It's a beautiful saddle, and it looks like it fits you and Farouk well. I miss his orange saddle pad! I look forward to seeing how the saddle works for both of you for a short hack. Those knee rolls look like they might take some getting used to, especially in a rising trot. So far so good! Well done! Xoxoxo PS We'll done with removing your jacket. I'm wracking my brain trying to remember taking off a jacket in the saddle but for the life of me I can't do it. As much as my brother and I rode out, in all kinds of weather, I cannot imagine we did not take off a jacket from time to time, but the particular memory evades me!

Thanks for that. Beautiful saddle. The suede is a very good idea. I don't know what it is about the jacket removal that spooks them. He stood very well until the very last, so I thought he did well. I had a quarter horse on the farm who was the calmest horse … honestly as a 4 year old, he seemed unshakeable. He had plenty of get up and go, (for me!) but he was very calm. I remember going for a walk with him, with my little sister on his back. A bunch of bees came around and she had a melt down on him, shrieking and waving her arms and he didn't bat an eye. Mind you I was standing beside him. We had draft horses too and they were the same. Very mellow fellows and really gentle. But I never tested taking my coat off on them.

My next saddle will be for English endurance riding, that’ll be interesting, I never rode English before, I might need some Velcro on my seat, since there is no saddle horn to grab, if and when needed.

You could probably ride in your pajamas on one! 😄 the outside blocks will come in handy for those unexpected shys! I ride Jack in a close contact hunt saddle. I like it ok, but I realy prefer my all purpose. However, it doesn't fit Jack properly.😏I guess that's how some horse people end up with 3 or 4 saddles and a trunk full of girths! Oh, AND pads!☺

Hello Tara Found all your comments interesting Hard to believe now that when I first went to a Riding School in the UK (1952 !) I gave no thought of the traffic & took it all for granted that the horse or pony I rode would behave itself We were in a group of usually 12 plus our riding instructor who was a good rider & looked after her horses & ponies well We wore the old fashioned velvet caps with an elastic under the chin. Fortunately all the horses & ponies were well mannered & I only remember one fall A girl cantering in the front of me fell to the right & I went past & stopped The Riding teacher came & helped her back on & all was well. The ride lasted appro. one hour cost six shilling When we arrived back at 3 pm another group were eagerly awaiting their turn Although we each had favourites we were encouraged to ride them all in turn I only felt uncomfortable around one of them & couldn't even explain why I did ride him but only once. We rarely spent time in the schooling area & beginners were often taken out on the lead rope either side of the instructor. This was my Golden hour as I lived in town & had travel time to the school I attended which was a workhouse before it was a school. My plan was to work with horses but it didn't work out that wayBut that is another long story Happily living in NZ & we are just into Level 2 with lots of restrictions re gatherings but we are all (most) are doing what it takes to keep the Virus at bay Very Thankful! Nice saddle! Good job Farouk! I had what was called a Plantation Saddle back in the 70’s. I don’t know that they make them anymore. As the name suggests, they were made to sit in all day on a Saddlebred type horse (very comfortable gates) in the American South for running the plantation. It was almost like a cross between a Western and English saddle. Eventers liked them. It was just too heavy, too much saddle for me. I’d have preferred something like yours. It’s quite like an updated Australian saddle, isn’t it?
