Great review. I bought three for my family. Trying to find a base antenna recommendation that will allow us to receive and transmit on the GMRS channels and receive the other bands the KG 1000 plus can receive. Any recommendations are appreciated.

I love the dry humor ;) Peeling the cellophane off the display, although not in the same league as the deli scene from that famous movie, was good. I neither have nor want a GMRS but will conitnue to watch just for the deadpan jokes!

I noticed The KG-XS20G Plus Display screen and menu are identical to the KG-935G Plus HT.. For the Price of 199 the KG-1000G Plus Is more feature packed for just 80 bucks More but this is a nice looking radio and ip67 rating is nice 9:17 @NotaRubicon Productions

That depends on how you define "best" .. I use the Midland MXTA26 on my Jeep.

Randy what do you recommend between this radio and Midland MXT400?

According to information supplied by Wouxun, this mobile radio requires a power supply of 20 amps at 13.8 volts. But, included in equipment that comes with the radio, is a cigarette lighter plug. A 10 amp 12 volt plug. Will the radio overload the 12 volt plug, or will the radio just operate at a lower wattage?

Please tell me there is a secret unlock function for full transmission on all frequencies!

Since you made no mention, the two screws that hold the cover to the data port do NOT require a special security Phillips screwdriver. Is this correct? Thank you for your review.

Randy has a way of enticing us to buy radios. Even though single and living alone, I have quite a few purchased after watching his videos. Hopefully, one day, the GMRS radio industry will present him with a "Best Salesman Of All Time Award".

Have you seen any GMRS radios that give you the option of hooking up a PA speaker? It seemed so popular on CBs but haven't heard of the option on GMRS.

Sadly that's because Citizens Band is Amplitude Modulated (AM) and requires a 5 watt audio amplifier to modulate the 5 watt AM signal. That PA switch on your CB simply moves the connection of the audio amp from the transmitter to the speaker output jack. GMRS radios are Frequency Modulated and thus have no need for a powerful audio amplifier circut.

Hello Randy. I wonder if you would answer a question for me. I purchased a KG-XS 20G+ recently. I have a surecom swr meter and a 50w dummy load. I am unable to duplicate the 25 watt power output you showed. Trying to figure out why. Any suggestions. Im using it in the truck with engine running so proper voltage input is being used. Thanks!

Make sure you're transmitting on high-power and make sure you are using a short cable from the radio to the power meter. The radio is only supposed to output UP TO 20W, so anything in the 15W-20W range is to be expected.

I am doing all of those sir. Thanks sooo much for the reply. They must have sent you a hot rod model to test. I am getting 18 to 20 watts. I am conparing this radio to a btech 50v2 and trying to reach a repeater 30 plus miles away. Truth is i like the way the xs20 works over the btech. But i have been told i sound better through the repeater on the btech. Yesturday i was told u sounded perfectly clear through same repeater on the xs 20. I think location has more to do with things than power. What do you think.? Love your radio tests. I had to go buy the same gadgets to test and im glad i did. I discovered the first nagoya 200c antenna i had was giving me a horrible swr! . I have learned all knowledge from your videos. Thank you!. Keep up the good work!.

I have also tried out the small btech20 watt unit which was great except for the low output. Also tried a radioddity db25. That worked well. Was loud and easy to see display. Only issue was microphone was junk! It felt like i was going to crush it every time i handled it. !!

I am happy with the KG-XS20g minus, I don't feel the need to upgrade ;) More seriously, the XS20g was easy to install and has worked great for me using one of the Melowave shadow antenna. I have to image the Plus version would work the same, only it would be plus the Plus.

Would you recommend this or the Btech GMRS 50v2?

i dont make recommendations - I give you the info about each radio so you can decide for yourself which one meets your personal GMRS needs and desires.

If you use the MXTA26 with a GMRS radio you do not need to tune or trim it - it is pre tuned for GMRS.

Why can’t you use the cigarette lighter plug in a 50watt radio application. I did the math with the volts and amps and it would work fine especially in a modern sedan. Please let me know because I’m debating on 20 or 50 watt based on this.

Wonder why these radio manufacturers don’t offer an option that allows the radio to turn and off automatically when you start your vehicle like your stereo does? Not a big deal, but just something I thought would be a nice feature.

Depending on the vehicle, the 12V plug turns on/off with the key. If you have multiple 12V plugs, chances are that one of them is switch powered and not constantly hot.

You can easily wire it to turn on and turn off with the vehicle.

What does GMRS even stand for? I don't think anyone knows. I bet the R stands for radio though.

at first I was confused then I reread my question and it is indeed poorly written. Then I laughed because its exactly what my buddy would have said. So to clarify, its not possible to expand the bands on this model. I was looking for a better version of the baofeng 50 watt mobile. Also saw it wasn't CHIRP compatible which is sort of a deal breaker because its so easy to program between radios with CHIRP. Thanks for the morning giggle. @@TheNotaRubicon

Sadly, I returned my new rig (my Xmas present from wife and kids!) after a few days because it kept shutting down when operating at 20 watts. The radio got very hot, very fast. Ran as base into commercial J-pole with 13.8 v 30 amp power supply. Like receiving lump of coal for Xmas. Boo hoo.
