@@UltimosGabriel When the DM designs something, it has to have a semblance of balance in mind. For some this is just game balance, for others world building included. Sometimes things aren't going to just straight up work in the players' favor. If this is done all the time or vindictively, that's bad. In the case of this, it'd be to plug holes and make the item work as intended. I don't have an issue with plugging holes though it isn't the way I'd go about it. I prefer to make rules that fit the theme. If it is a gambler type ability, let them reroll and whatnot. Invite it. Just, also punish it. That way there's a balancing factor. Maybe something like whenever a reroll is used on it, the user takes X damage, whatever is fair for your table. And intermediary way to handle it would be to make it so it can only be rerolled once and whatever it ends up with sticks. Either way, I don't think letting this go through uninhibited with halfling is what most tables would want to see. It'd get old really quick which is not what the DM wants so they shouldn't design an item that way.

i've seen a die that has a similar distribution, but the removed numbers are from the middle of the range. it was called something like a "high dynamic" or "high variance die". it was designed off of the idea that extreme rolls are more interesting, so it just pushes the odds towards such things. the actual spread was really dumb, but it's a neat idea that could be iterated on I would think.

Fun Fact! Bunkers & Badasses uses a version of this as a core part of the system! The "Badass Die" is a d20 where 18 and 19 are both 20's, but 2 and 3 are both 1's. (instead of 16 and 17) They're used for the "Badass Move" action, a special turn-encompasing action players can attempt individually, or as a group. How it works is a player will declare their intent to perform a Badass Move, spend Badass Tokens (described later) based on how many Badass Moves they've initiated this session, then describe EVERYTHING they want to do on their turn, using as many actions as they want. Any players who haven't taken their turn yet can join in, describing the actions they want to take as well. Players should be encouraged by the BM (Bunker Master) to go as over-the-top as possible and be the biggest Badass they can be. Once everyone that's participating has finished, and the BM has decided it's Badass enough, they'll set a DC for the Badass Move based on the number of players, their actions, and how Badass it all sounds. All players will roll the Badass Die, add their Badass Rank (a special score, roughly 1/2 level on average, though the BM can award increases after impressive displays of Badassery), and then all players total their results together vs the DC. If they beat the DC, everything they described *Happens*. Players only need to roll to determine how many damage dice they roll, and damage itself, abd they can replace any d20 roll with their Badass Die result if they want. Additionally, the player that initiated the Badass Move gets 4 Badass Tokens and uses their Ability Scores instead of Modifiers until their next turn. (Scores start at 0, not 10.) Other players that participate get 2 Tokens. On a Failure, players must take their turns as normal, rolling for skill checks, attacks, etc as normal. The initiating player gets 2 Tokens, other players get 1, and the BM gets 1 Mayhem, plus an additional for each nat1 rolled. - Badass Token: A player resource. These can be spent to increase ANY die roll, ally or enemy, by +1. Players must spend 0 Tokens, +1 per Badass Move that player initiated this session to initiate a new Badass Move. (So 0, then 1, then 2, etc.) - Mayhem: A BM resource generated by various things. Can be spent by the BM to cause problems for the players. (Things like spawning more or stronger enemies, upgrading enemies, allowing enemies to make extra actions, completing secret boss plans, or rolling on a "Rando-stuff" table of random complications.)

@@adambaryliuk3393Advanced versatile performance does most of the legwork. I picked Perform (Wind) to use that check for Diplomacy and Handle Animal. Then Perform (Comedy) for Bluff and Intimidate. Then your choice for the advanced versatile skills at levels 10, 14, and 18 (I think I planned for Escape Artist and Sense Motive, don't remember the other). So that's 7 skills that use the corresponding performance bonus. At level 19, Jack of All Trades allows you to take 10, even when it's not normally allowed. I made sure to put a point in both performance skills every level. So that's 20 ranks in performance, a +5 charisma bonus if you max charisma out at 20, and 3 points for a class skill. Plus taking 10, and you have an automatic 38. I had a set of magic bagpipes for another +2 to wind for a total of 40. But even without that, it's still impressive. And that's not even including the 3 times you can take 20 on knowledge checks a day at that level, as a standard action!

I like this for moments that are both incredibly important, but also incredibly complicated. Like if a player is trying to decide what to do to avoid a TPK against the big boss and they come up with a crazy plan to tie dynamite to an arrow and try to trigger some sort of cave-in between them and the boss, it's like "Well, there's a decent chance that will go exactly how you want it to, but also a decent chance that it will backfire horrifically, with a moderate chance of lesser failure and even less chance for a lesser success." If you crit-succeed, I'd have the rocks fall and separate the party from the enemy, giving you a brief period to run or rest. If you crit-fail the rocks will fall on the party dealing more damage and likely sealing off any chance you might have had to escape. A regular fail sees the explosive arrow miss the roof of the cave and just harmlessly sail off into the distance with a little "boom" for insult. A regular success might drop some rocks on the enemy, dealing damage but not causing the cave-in you were hoping for.

Halfling Divination Wizard with the Lucky Feat: "I see only benefits here"

Just a random idea I got last week: when the bard of our group decided to take a drink, I grabbed some dice I looted from board games thrown in the trash: a blue, red, white, and one with colors instead of numbers I call it the Drunken Dice: whatever color shows up is the dice who says how many swigs/ shots/ barrels are downed. Quite hilarious when a giant chugs a few barrels of ale 😁

This would be really cool for like a halfling or an elf w elven accuracy. I can imagine someone w piercer and gunner trying to go for big 3d12+10 ranged critical hits and this being super cool for that. It’s an interesting idea to use a worse-averaged die for stuff like that
This is like the DnD version of the Monty Hall Problem from Brooklyn 99.
the idea of using them as cursed dice for cursed weapons is actually brilliant.
Half elf barb paladin with elven accuracy seems super good
Here me out: every number is a 10 except for a single 1
I could 100% see so many uses for a die like that
That would be fun for a specific magic weapon. One of the features is using that die for attack rolls.
If I got one of these made, I’d probably print it in black and then switch the spool to print it in white and then paint the numbers red.
we should introduce more Mario Party mechanics to DnD like this. For example, after every round of combat, we should make the players compete in a minigame in real life to reorganize the initiative order
This is a brilliant idea and I can believe I’ve never thought about it before
This could be a Cool dice to show the blessing of the goddess of luck since most of her followers are gamblers she both likes to see people have good luck and bad luck so this could be a cool blessing
That die looks like exactly the sort of thing you'd use for almost everything to play a character equivalent to Nathan Drake.
The Divination Wizard has a new favorite dice
Laughs in reliable talent.
The impact of advantage and disadvantage would be really pronounced on this one
Kinda reminds me of the “Roll with Emphasis” I heard about where you roll twice and take the one that’s furthest from 10
As one who enjoys a bit of to hit sorcery, I'll take those odds
Perfect. I'll give these to Derek, he plays a champion fighter.
Halflings are going to TOWN with these
I love this. This has reckless barbarian written all over it
"risky dice is a card in the fictional video game called greed island that is set in the world of Hunter X Hunter. The die has 20 sides, 19 great luck sides (green) and 1 worst luck side (red) if you roll great luck then the next time you would need luck to be on your side it will always be in your favor but if you roll worst luck then the effects will be so negative it will cancel out everything positive you have rolled, very often resulting in death."
It's almost perfect for my homebrew class where the crit range is extended.
This is great for anyone running fun homebrew mechanics like clash too!
I particularly like this idea.
At GenCon I got a set of odd dice (d1,3,7-9-11-13-15-17-19) and I use the 19 for cursed weapons, and the lower ones for skill checks (based on what level and exhaustion/irritated fae or caster/ and wild magic table) for 1 time temp debuffs in situations when it works thematically
I kinda love this. I would use this all the time.
Wow, that's a really clever idea!
Oooo I like this, this is a really cool idea for cursed weapons
I had for a while a d20 with one 20 and nineteen 1's, to be used in situations that were basically hopeless, because there always a chance!
Never heard it called a gamblers die, Wrymwood called them high variance in their Kickstarter.
As someone who intends to play as the equivalent of a sentient cursed weapon, yes
This scratches my brain right
I like this dice a lot
It would be cool to have a gambler type subclass that has feature like using one of thease, high-risk and reward abilities and such
As a reckless attacking halfling barbarian with the lucky feat i see this as an absolute win
Halflings are gonna be over powered
Thats a REALLY cool cursed item
I think it’d be really cool for a table to have a community gamblers die if someone wants to risk it for the biscuit
I would use this as a "Devil's Bargain", as in... "you missed but i will let you use the Gambler's Die, with serious consequences for failure..."
This is such a sick idea.
I got one of these as the badass dice in borderlands bunkers and badasses
Damn I need to get a 3d printer bad
He said Gamblers die and I say, “Take my gosh darn wallet and give me as many as possible!”
Personally I like the idea of having a stacked die for the big boss opponents, just to emphasise how dangerous they actually are
It’s literally just the badass die from bunkers and badasses
This with elven accuracy on a rogue could be very interesting
This might work great for a wild sorcerer, maybe a special effect table for 20s and 1s.
My players dealt with something like this for a recent arc, in which they were trapped in the Lockyrinth, a hell-plane separated between chaotic 'jailed' zones where demons dwell and the lawful 'jailer' zones full of devils. I created separate sets of dice for Lawful characters in Chaotic zones, Chaotic characters in Chaotic zones, etcetera, with the lawful dice trending towards the middle and the chaotic dice trending towards the extremes, but each favouring those that share the alignment.
