I was homeless about 15yrs ago and was only helped thru the kindness of strangers, not everyone uses money for drugs some desperately need it x

I worked across the hall from a homeless outreach and their workers even told me not to give any of the people out with signs anything because of how much they made a day doing it.

I know a guy who ran a homeless charity in Manchester. He says to NEVER give homeless people money, or even food, If you want to help, the best thing you can give them is time to listen to their story, and to donate to the homeless shelters where they can get the social support they actually need.

I would bring then somewhere to eat, some people you can trust and some people you can’t, so I want to be sure that they aren’t just wasting my hard earned money on unnecessary things

The real homeless people are those who remain quiet and out of the way. Most that sit by AtM have homes and beds to go to during the evening

I used to get 'homeless ' people comin in and changing there change into notes to then go pay for there drugs, if we didnt give them it they got shitty. Alot have homes and gamble (worked in the gambling industry for 12yrs) This worlds built to help people. Most people DO NOT help themselves. I also used to buy them meals....to find then thrown away or given to someone else. My grandad used to give them £10 notes to then find out they all got in the same bmw at the end of the day I also knoe drug addicts who choose to go to food banks instead of purchase food. People are shit. Its hard to know what to do for the best nowadays

That’s so sad, I don’t necessarily see that as people being shitty as much as desperation. As someone who has lived with a drug addiction, it consumes your life without you even realising. Some people, like myself are lucky enough to have good people around them that help them fight addiction, many do not. Living in a drug den with 12 other addicts is not what I call ‘having a home’. This world is not built to help people, our current government in the uk is doing its absolute best to make life harder for the impoverished. They’ve cut funding to homeless shelters and charities, continuously cut benefits, there’s no effective free rehabilitation schemes to help them with their addictions. Plus most people look down on them and many are abusive to the homeless. Because of cut funding, there are many shelters that have closed down or only operate in nasty weather conditions. Many homeless people only have the choice of a hostel which costs them money, which is usually around £25 for a night. To get a job in the uk, you need proof of residence which is impossible if you don’t have one or even not an official one. The people who need to do better is us, we need to vote in leadership who will help them, who will make the changes to ensure it’s not so easy to slip into this kind of life.

£1 isn't going to buy that homeless person a house or get them a job

Would you rather help a few addicts and save a guy from starvation or or not help any addicts and somebody goes hungry? Simple question..... The they use it for drugs excuse is just an excuse for those that dont want to part with their money. Life's hard enough as it is many people will become addicted on the street its uncomfortable as hell, its not camping...... I cant blame these people for using something that makes their auful enviroment more palatable..... And yes at the same time these addictions can often be what causes the homelessness in the first place, but those addictions were most often caused by trauma and usually the worst kind theres a reason so many addicts are veterans or were molested at a young age..... Just remember who youre refusing to help.....

Let’s be real smoking cigarettes while homeless makes sense. If you’re strong enough to not smoke in that situation you can do anything and wouldn’t be homeless.

Because you want to help them. You want that money going towards coffee, hot food, saved up for a place to stay or a suit for a job interview- that sort of thing. It’s not odd to not what your money going straight to alcohol or drugs that will only sustain and keep that person homeless. It is my money, so before I give it to someone, I’d be nice to know what it is going to be used for something good that truly helps them. It ain’t that weird. I won’t question them or refuse but you’re wrong in the we “shouldn’t care” bit

Who cares if your fueling a substance addict. There having a bad time. What do we do when we’re having a bad day also having substances. Help where you can!

You probably are fuelling their drug habit but who cares? They’re usually adults, if they want to do drugs that’s their choice. Now if they ask specifically for money for food or shelter that’s another thing but if they just ask for money and don’t specify what for, it’s not your problem what happens after that.

I can’t get mad at the homeless guy buying drugs with the money I game him because I was only out to buy drugs myself why would I judge him he actually has a reason to do escape his problems and I had a hard time being stuck in traffic

I think it's better to give a homeless person money for a drug habit rather than them turn to other means to support that habit. They're not gonna stop even if they're not given enough.
