Welcome to my channel, where I provide honest and insightful reviews of motorcycles. In today's video, I share my personal experiences and unexpected challenges with the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650. Join me as I delve into the pros, cons, and whether I would make the same choice again!
When I initially purchased the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650, I was captivated by its classic design and the promise of a thrilling riding experience. However, as with any relationship, sometimes things don't go as smoothly as expected. In this review, I open up about the problems that started to emerge after a mere 2500km of riding.
From check engine lights to brake squeaking and false neutrals, I encountered a series of unexpected issues that left me questioning whether this was the best choice for me. It's important to note that these experiences could be isolated incidents, and other Interceptor 650 owners may have had different outcomes. However, I believe in sharing my honest reflections to provide a balanced perspective.
Throughout the video, I dive into the details of these challenges, providing insights into the potential causes and possible solutions. I also discuss the impact of these issues on the overall ownership experience, including the high running costs that I've encountered. It's crucial to weigh the positives and negatives when considering any motorcycle purchase, and I aim to provide you with a transparent and informed review.
Now, you might be wondering, would I buy the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 again? The answer to that question is not as straightforward as you might expect. Join me as I reveal my final verdict and share my thoughts on whether I would make the same choice knowing what I know now.
Whether you're a prospective buyer, an Interceptor 650 owner facing similar challenges, or simply curious about my experience, this video is for you. It's an opportunity to learn from my journey and make an informed decision based on the pros, cons, and unexpected hurdles I encountered.

Bought my 2023 Mark II in January of 22, love it so far. RE allows you to do your own service without voiding the warranty. I also have other motorcycles for other types of riding that I enjoy, but my RE INT 650 takes me back to the type of riding that motorcycles were initially intended for; it also does it quite comfortably. I am sorry to hear that you are having these issues and complaints, but they are beautiful, fun and nostalgic bikes that have a pretty good QC track record as of late.

Your right, But if you listen to what most reviews say, it's great, But if I was to buy one I would upgrade the suspension, change this and change that, put a new seat on change the bars , change the tyres, and look on line ther are loads of them for sale with very little mileage, and many have had suspension and exhaust system upgrades. So what does that tell you? Keep smiling, life is a constant learning curve.

I got an interceptor 650 3rd hand. It only had 350 miles in it, so not even at it's first service yet. It sat it's first winter outside with the person I bought it from. It needed a little TLC as he had dropped it a couple times. I did my own service and it was NOT hard at all. Several vids out there in this. I saved $400 (what I paid here in the states too) on it and learned the bike in the process. Best move I made and it only cost me a feeler gauge, oil and a filter. Already had the lube. So far it runs like a top and all I did was to get a DNA air filter and Powerage mufflers. Like you, I didn't want the most power a bike could have, knowing me, I'd have to test it and my wife isn't ready to give me up yet...yet. Hope it all gets sorted out for you, and for the better too!

I'm 55 this year and I've been off bikes for a while. I don't want power but the looks of those bikes that got me interested in bikes as a child in the first place. When buying my first RE Conti 650 I went in with my eyes wide open in that I was buying basically a '60's era engine with some modern technology like Bosch fuel injection and antilock brakes. In North America we can service our own vehicles without the worry of voiding the manufacturer vehicle warranty. I watched a few KZread vids and did the first service myself. New oil , filter and a few beers, out of pocket $50.00. Comparing the W 800 engine sound to the RE twin is like comparing a 1960 beetle engine sound to 2020 VW Golf, either you like the agriculture-like sound or you don't. I liked the Continental GT so much I bought a RE Himalayan which is by far my favorite bike to ride, I also have a Honda Goldwing. I hope you are able to get your bike's issue sorted easily.

I bought a simple OBD 2 fault reader and used basic tools to go right through the bike and fix all of the faults. MOST of the faults were due to neglect by the previous owners. Properly serviced and with everything set to the manufacturers specifications, it runs like a "Swiss Watch." Royal Enfield produce simple easy to own motorcycles. (Millions of them!)

I was always telling people to buy used W800 rather than a brand new Enfield. Yes, the new Enfields are better made than the old carburetted Bullets... but they are no more real 50s bikes and yet they are nowhere close in quality to Japanese retro motorcycles. But for the fact, RE have brilliant marketing ;) Don't worry - it could be worse... A friend of mine had a broken engine in the new Himalayan due to a chain tensioner failure which caused the valve to meet with the piston... BUT... truth to be told - I had check engine light on in most of my bikes at some point. Usually, it was the fuel issues.

Hey, Greetings from Serbia. I have a Meteor 350 and also occasional check engine light comes on. Turns out its a oil temperature sensor issue, well not really a issue but the fact that they made the tolerances of that sensor readings based on Indian climate. The light would come on when I turned on the bike like bellow 10-15'C. Apparently this should be fixed with a ECU update in the service center. As for the comfort, I can't really add to that, the seat is very different to the Meteor. Price, well in my example, for a cruiser, the option was RE Meteor 350 or something like the Honda Rebel or a Kawasaki Vulcan S. But they are all a) "bit" more powerfull b) much more expensive. I like your vlog, crazy the amount of cash you paid for the service, that was a rip-off I would argue with them for sure. My first service on 500km was ~80e I'm sure you read a lot on the forums, and the small problems that will eventually go away, I'm hoping that will be in your case too, like false neutrals and such Best regards

First, It's great you respond to so many comments. That's wonderfully considerate. Second, Stuart Fillingham owns a RE Interceptor and produces many videos. I'm sure you've seen them. He seems to be an honest reviewer too. Third--and this has nothing to do with motorcycles but everything to do with a "check engine" light. I bought a used Ford F250 ten years ago. For EU folks, a Ford F250 is a big pickup truck with a 2.4 meter bed and a 7.5 liter V8 engine. The check engine light has been on since the day I bought it. Nothing seems to make it go away and I just ignore it--never have had a problem. (I always joke that the fastest moving part on the whole truck is the gas guage going down.) Anyway, great review--it's very helpful to get a contrarian opinion from an actual owner of the Interceptor. I don't trust any of the "test ride" reviews.

I have the GT version so I'm curious to know what the check engine light was all about. Sure these Indian made bikes are not as nicely put together as a typical Japanese bike but having spent my formative motorcycling years on British bikes I find my Indian made bike is fine. Only problem I had was with the grease plastered all over the relay sockets, a very common problem on these bikes and easily fixed when you work out what the problem actually is. I do all my own service and when the local price of parts is too outrageous (like the rocker box gasket/seal) I order them direct from India.

Something crazy there. Yeh, I think you're having a bad day! The cost of first service for me was £180 and I had a loan bike overnight so they did cold valve check. In contrast, my last Kawasaki Z900RS (sure, higher performance and twice the price bike) had a longer valve service first time at something like18k-km but the cost is over £800. As for noisy engine - looks as if you were comparing a brand new W800 with your Interceptor (and the W800 is dearer anyway) - try a ride on a W after it's run in and it's much noisier. It's also far less smooth to ride than the RE imho. The RE is a much better ride. Japanese motorcycles are not much better, not in the mid-range 650-800 class. Any apparent better quality has to be factored into the higher initial price anyway - but the RE is generally high quality. My old Honda NC750X was a lovely bike but there were very clear areas - swing arm paint, front fork chrome, and other parts, that lacked quality and were made to a budget. (However, I will go back to one eventually). The Interceptor seat, by comparison, is far better than the harsh Honda saddle. Also the Honda as with many Japanese bikes, lacks any character. The RE is a bargain and delivers a very good handling bike, with a smooth and torquey engine (all you said others claim). I'd be straight in complaining about the engine light and presumably it's still under warranty. So before you get downhearted, find out why - and how they deal with it. There's no guarantee Honda or Suzuki would be any better.

Squeaky brakes is a normal occurrence on most vehicles. This is just contaminants that accumulate on rotors, and pads over time, like excess dust, mud, etc. Flush brakes and rotors with clean water occasionally to reduce contaminants. Inspect pads and rotors for any damage that has incurred from normal road use. If you live in a particularly wet or humid area, inspect for rust accumulation and burrs that can be caused from excess moisture on brake surface areas. If persistent squeaking continues, make sure brakes are clean and dry, and spray components with a quality brake cleaner according to manufactures recommendations. You can always upgrade to performance brake components. Inspect relays for excess dielectric grease packing from factory, and depack by flushing relay connections and blades. Use a quality electronic cleaner, such as CRC-Electronic cleaner as recommended. After cleaning reintroduce just a thin layer of dielectric grease such as [ AGS Dielectric Grease], with just your finger just to cover surface of blades for protection of component. Check all connections periodically for connectivity. Vibration tends to work electrical connections loose over time, especially motorcycle connectors. 👍👍🏁🏁

And 773cc vs 648cc of course. The noises you are hearing on the interceptor are mostly the cam chain, 2 overhead cams and their tappets, and the 270 deg firing interval.

Shop around for dealerships to do your servicing, or do it yourself it's not difficult, engine light could be greasy relays common with these, in any case the warranty will sort that out, as for comfort buy the latest RE touring seat they're very reasonably priced, brake issue will be trivial, contamination or similar, again warranty if you can't clean pads/discs, if your stil not happy then pay thousands more for one of the competition.

That bike has got to be the easiest current bike in the world to work on yourself. Valve clearance check and oil change should be an hour in the driveway and about 20 bucks, filter and oil combined. I have a VStrom 650 and the valve service on that is a gigantic pain in the ass compared to the INT650. If you're paying more than he is, it's because you have a crappy dealer that's ripping you off. Seriously the service is trivial, you can learn to do it easily yourself. But maybe that's just me - I actually won't let anyone else touch my bikes or cars. I've never taken a bike to anyone else for any kind of service.

I wish my Tenere 700 was only 400 dollars. I would gladly pay that. Regular routine maintenance for my bike used to cost me around 600 dollars. Recently it went up another 50-70 bucks. The 12,000 mile maintenance was 1,100 dollars. Yes, 1,100 bucks. That is a lot of money, specially when you consider that the routine maintenance of the Tenere 700 in the US is done every 4,000 miles. Yamaha USA likes to scam people out of money, because the routine maintenance of the Tenere 700 in other countries is every 6,000 miles.some claim that it is due to the higher speeds of the roads in the US. I think it’s bull crap. I can only imagine the price of routine maintenance for BMW and other European bikes in the US.

The seat is uncomfortable after a couple of hours, but I usually take a break for other reasons every one to two hours anyway. Service costs are high but I hope over time to do more of the work myself because the bike is pretty basic. I do wish for a little more power going up steep hills but otherwise no complaints. Ironically I am almost looking forward to parts needing to be replaced because they generally can be upgraded for a significant improvement. Having said all that I do like some of the similar sized Japanese bikes, but I don't trust my inner idiot with the extra power of say the XSR700 and I think the Z900RS is simply gorgeous, but sadly too much power for me.

I think that the appeal is totally subjective and to be frank, if you want a comfortable bike to ride you do not buy a retro Cafe styled machine of any brand; just saying. I have owned several different vintage cafe styled bikes over the years and none of them delivered a cushy ride; however, they did deliver a degree of exhilaration when zipping through the twisties. If you want a plush ride then you need to look towards something of a sport tourer like a Pacific Coast, a full on bagger like an R 18, Chieftain, Ultra Classic, or at the very least a Heritage, SoftTail Deluxe, or a cruiser of that sort be it a Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Moto Guzzi, BMW, or so on. There are plenty of bikes better suited to comfort and I see the Enfield as an entry level commuter/toy with plenty of nostalgic character, that is also easy on the wallet (to a degree). Plus it is also being able to say you own a bike made by the oldest motorcycle manufacturer on the planet. I own a vintage Harley, am looking for a vintage Indian, had a 62 Triumph and hope to find another, and ordered a 2023 Continental GT for a daily commuter. This is because I wanted a bike from each of the 4 oldest motorcycle companies in the world. The funny thing is none of them are comfortable for long distance and that is why an R-18 will be in the works for 2025. Hopefully, by then I will have more time to ride long distance than I do now.

Buy a Honda cb500x and you will have oil dripping from the water pump from 570km. Deformed tires from new, plastic steering bearings. The counter nut from the steering stem it's getting loose every time. The warranty is rubbish. They replace only the pump after 1 year, at around 5000km. Bolts are getting stretch, even if they are torqued to the correct value. The abs ring has scratches on it, but it touches nothing. On the rear wheel one of the bearing is turning very easy, the other is like new. You pay for Honda quality, but you get ...... I've tested RE continental GT and it looks very well done. The ride feeling was superior to the cb500x. They didn't have interceptor for drive test so I can't say anything about comfort, but the Himalayan is the firs bike that I can ride standing up with stock setup. All the brands have problems now. Some are little some are big, but the difference is made by the solutions that they provide. About the price of the service. In my country, Romania, it was around 115 euros only the oil and filter. The second was at the dealer over 250 euros. In your case...something was wrong with 400$.

Will ride it for couple more years and see how it ends up. Thank you for watching and your comment, all kind of opinions are appreciated.

If you own a Royal Enfield you should be doing the servicing yourself, it’s that easy! Also, it’s not the bikes fault you got ripped of by the-dealer who serviced it! Can’t take this vid seriously, apologies!

Well. In order to keep the warranty, buyer is obligated to do service intervals in authorized service. And The price I paid to service is only 15% higher then the official RE service price. Still this is 3 times more then Suzuki takes to service Vstrom. This is a fair review of how it is to own an Interceptor 650.

@@bartgoodride That’s not quite right, at least not in the uk. Law states that servicing must be done by a competent person, certainly not necessarily a main dealer (although I do agree some dealers may fight this to protect their own interests, even though they’re wrong! But servicing costs should be no more than £250, unless the dealer is confused over what has to be done and when, as some are. I would seriously find another mechanic. I do agree that the seat is rubbish - was first thing I replaced!

the only one on the net who criticizes Royal Enfield! who rides an interceptor...? is it paid by a competing brand? if you are not happy with one bike buy another...but for the same price you will get nothing and there are problems on all bikes

Yr dealer / service centre is charging way too much and he should fix things like squeaky brakes and engine problem under warranty. Apart from that , it’s basically an updated sixties design so don’t compare it to modern jap bikes

me and my buddy's have this group for almost 4yrs nos and we have same bike int650 our bikes is 4yrs old now and none of us encountered your problem to be honest. people can't or no right compare the quality of int650 and gt's to their lower cc brothers their quality is way far better from those smaller CC bike. for me if you can't afford more expensive brand like triumph I think you have no right to bent out you just have to accept to yourself that you can't afford expensive thing. kia wagon? kia? that's says alot about your income. come on man don't be on the bitter side you no rich don't be delicate cause you can't. simple as that.

When you pay half yes half for a machine then expect a few issues Its great to simply have a machine you can work on and not pay £90 per hour to some idiot company I do not make this comment in light terms It seems to me that think motorbike and double any price or just make it up as you go along MASSIVE MASSIVE RIP OFF COMES TO MIND !! Bikes Clothing Parts etc etc etc its a joke !!!! So buy a cheap bike service it yourself learn what its about and stay well away from the so called modern stuff In a nut shell Royal Enfield will always be a good buy Its just common sense is it not ??? I own a B.M.W. 1200 G.S. and what a pile of rubbish it really is if you take the running costs and how some of it is put togethere so dont listen to the B.M.W. brigade who tell you how reliable and fantstic these bikes sre THEY ARE NOT IN MY HUMBLE OIPINION !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
